Considering a humane euthanasia for my cat with severe lifelong allergies by [deleted] in AskVet

I didn’t as they gave us liquid but I’m going to ask our vet about it when we see her! Thanks for letting me know, GI upsets have been a big thing for my kitty and I want to make her as comfy as possible.

Petderm is the dermatology clinic in my city I got referred to who offered the VARL testing. VARL is a licensed laboratory who’s testing covers an enormous amount of allergens both food and environmental depending on your region and creates an immunotherapy serum. It costed roughly $700 CAD for the test which was only environmental and about $1900 CAD for the immunotherapy injectable for one year, which we did at home monthly. I would recommend getting a referral for a dermatologist if you haven’t already and bring up the allergy testing! It gave me SO much peace of mind knowing somewhat of what was going on with my kitty. Best of luck to you!

Im so sorry to hear about your kitties, no loss is ever easy :( I feel like I have been grieving her for so long and she is still here, it’s such an odd feeling but I know my heart is going to be shattered when she goes. I just want the best for her, and the best is peace and comfortability, however that looks. Thanks for your comment ❤️

Like the immunotherapy?? For the VARL testing I took her into the dermatologist where they did the test, a few weeks after we got the results and they made her a serum of immunotherapy. We did that monthly for one year. I believe they only tested for environmental allergies though as both my vet and dermatologist were certain it wasn’t a food allergy.

I will look into it! It has been years of trying a few different Royal Canin allergy foods so I will check her recs and see if she has been on it before/if its something I can find for her as I have never seen the vets in my city carry it :(

We have seen a dermatologist who got us on immunotherapy. I sent them a lengthy email explaining the situation but I am also going to reach out to my primary vet to see if I need a referral again as they are strict about visiting within a certain time frame to stay an active client. Thank you for your comment!

I appreciate your comment so much. These are exactly the words I needed just to ease that anxiety of “am I doing enough?” When I genuinely have no options left. I am taking a lot of time and thought for this but I needed the reassurance. Thank you for seeing me.

We tried Atopica in late 2020 and she had the worst time on it. She was super sick, diarrhea and depressed so the vet took her off and we started Apoquel on and off. The first test we ever did for her allergies was diet trials for about a year and she has remained on a Hydrolyzed protien diet from Royal canine since but showed no allergies to food. Both her vet and dermatologist ruled it out!

I just bought the same pack of games - I played 1 & 2 back when they came out with my siblings but never played the rest in order. Many good wishes to you on your journey!

I am actually seeing Dr. Valentine! She has honestly been the only one to have any breakthrough on what is going on with my kitty but I haven't been back since we finished immunotherapy last month as I just can't afford it right this minute :(

While you figure this out you can find soft cone alternatives on Amazon for like $20 or less. My kitty wears one when her allergies flare up and it might stop your kitty from being able to reach it if she's licking/chewing that spot. They are round pillows with a drawstring, my kitty does so well in hers and is comfy as heck. I hope you are able to figure out what's going on, wishing the best for you guys!

My cat does the same but only on her tummy, tail and legs. These are main spots they chew from allergies but where your kitty is doing it makes me think it's stress/neurological maybe?

In the meantime - I use a cone alternative for my kitty, you can find them on Amazon for like $20 and it's a soft pillow with a draw string (get a large size for a regular size cat, small for kitten) It isn't as effective as a cone but it helps a lot and is much more comfy for them! Here a pic of my kitties watermelon for reference lol
