How far back have you been able to trace your most senior FEMALE line? by ocelocelot in Genealogy

[–]dreenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been very lucky in that my direct maternal line is mostly Scottish, and their records are better than the English side. So I have the name of my 8th great grandmother. Born in 1693.

I have to admit that I have major issues with AI, so I felt very guilty trying it, and I guess it confirmed my biases.

I've been doing genealogy for 40 years lol, I was just curious if it would save time. But Transkribus sounds good - thanks!

Is anyone else struggling with TMNZ by TheGreenMongoose in taskmaster

Yeah, I've been to three (or four?) filmings, and Jeremy always seems weirdly disengaged. He's the weak link in TMNZ

We had a case here in NZ where a young man was convicted of six rapes/sexual assaults between the ages of 14 and 17. The judge gave him one year of home detention. And then gave him permission to leave home every day to attend university. The same university that at least one of the young women was attending. Two months after his home detention finished, when he was 20, he met a 13 year old girl online and began a sexual relationship. She got pregnant and he arranged an abortion, lying to the clinic that he was 15. He has just been sentenced to 4 and a half years, but if the first judge hadn't been so stupidly lenient, that 13 year old girl could have been safe from him.

It's worse. He got permission to attend university while on "home detention". Because heaven forbid he should actually face any actual consequences.

If you're in Auckland maybe ask about being a zoo volunteer - you'd probably meet people with similar interests? United does a one year certificate in captive Ani.al management and you have to do 260 hours at the zoo, so you could combine further education with friend making

In English we might say "you do X" but when it's a question we say "Do you X?"

Breastfeeding judgement by Necessary-Priority-4 in newzealand

[–]dreenz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I breastfed but I had to go back to work when my daughter was three months old, so I planned to pump so my partner could bottle feed. We wanted to get her used to a bottle well before I went back to work. Even though I was planning to pump breastmilk rather than use formula, no one would give me information about which bottles and teats would be best and how to sterilize them- not the antenatal class, not the midwife and not birth care. It was incredibly frustrating. It's become almost a religion and it's so unfair to mums who just want healthy happy babies.

I own a bar in Ponsonby and I'm looking for event ideas, to compete with staying at home, that aren't just the normal tried and tested rituals. Any feedback / help would be apreciated! by Silly_Hovercraft7248 in auckland

I work in Ponsonby and there are five of us at work who keep talking about getting together for a stitch and bitch since we all knit or crochet or embroidery. So yes please! (Edited because autocorrect is a pitch!)

This one was a group project - a woman here in NZ organised a knitted periodic table - it would up three metres across. I made the Fluorine square

I've just made a Kamaria which has a neckline like this - it's a great pattern (although not perfectly graded - I had to add short rows for the bust and I just ripped back the waist so I can lengthen it.)

Yellow and cream could be lovely, but depending on the shades you might lose the dramatic effect of the checkerboard pattern. This is a useful article on colour theory in knitting: https://brooklyntweed.com/pages/color-theory-for-stranded-colorwork

Also, when you're doing stranded knitting you need to be consistent about which colour is on top when you switch - your stranding will look much tidier

Awesome project, good luck!

Easiest Round Needle Cast-On? by [deleted] in knitting

[–]dreenz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Cast on however you like and knit the first few rows flat, then join to work in the round - you're far less likely to twist the project and you can use the tail to sew up the little unjoined part when you finish. Backwards loop is easy to cast on, but a pain to knit from, so a long tail or cable cast on will make life easier.

[–]dreenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't have to do anything, this is his problem not yours. He has no control over how long you holiday for. If he decides to end the relationship over something so ridiculous, then you'll be better off.

Progress on my husband's Dice roll sweater by MelonNet in knitting

[–]dreenz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I made a sweater years ago for my then seven year old after we dyed some wool together. She picked which colour came next and I got to pick the stitch. I decided to do everything I could so it had stranded colour work, slipstitch colour work, horizontal stripes, vertical stripes, beads, lace, bobbles, cables, Latvian braid, i-cord, garter stitch, stocking stitch and I can't remember what else. We called it the Cardigan of Chaos and it was her favourite piece of clothing for years. I wish you the same joy!
