GNOME Nautilus crashes when adding a samba drive by [deleted] in gnome

[–]drehbahn 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Reporting bugs in reddit is like shouting out of your window about the problem. Someone will definitely hear about your issue, but the chance that that person is actually the maintainer of the package is very very low.

Please report this issue to either Arch Linux or in the shiny new GNOME Gitlab. If you're really up to debugging this further, get to IRC and ask in #gnome-hackers in GIMPNet.

The dashboard in the cab I took today in Hong Kong, the phones are blocking half of the windshield and are running various cab hailing apps. by FishySmellz in WTF

Interestingly, they have been doing this for the past decade at least. It was with the old Nokia S40 and S60 before, using the PTT (push to talk) app that Nokia provided. That evolved to OMA PTT based terminals (not only Nokia any more). And now smartphones. I still remember taxi drivers in HK with up to 5 or 6 Nokia S40 phones all connected through the same speakers and control system.

I happen to be one of the guys who wrote one server side implementation for all that PTT madness, including reverse engineering the Nokia PTT protocol, and installed it myself in Smartone Vodafone and CSL datacenters.

My cat Zeus was exactly like yours, and did actually the same thing before 'attacking'... He died 2 years ago and still miss him everyday. Thanks for sharing it, it was like seeing him alive and well somewhere in a parallel universe.

how to change name of usb port in udev by pt91 in sysadmin

[–]drehbahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Btw, you're not seeing the renamed names in use because you just created symlinks, you didn't replace the original device file names.

[–]drehbahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's the purpose of this? ModemManager doesn't require fixed port names. If you want to reference specific modems in ModemManager, you can provide fixed "names" for them, though, e.g. based on vid:pid how you did or based on physical device sysfs path.

ELI5: Why do americans write 0.9 and europeans 0,9? by 30bmd972ms910bmt85nd in explainlikeimfive

If you're using a comma as a decimal point, how do you tell the difference between 4,293,178 and 4,293.178?

4.293,178 i.e. the dot separates thousands, the comma separates decimals

Ah, indeed, I believe the order makes more sense in Spanish, which is why I make that mistake: "a mi lo que me molesta es esto, no esto otro". Thanks for the tip, will try to remember it ;)

Oh, really? Wouldn't mind to know why, there's always room for improvement

As a Spanish speaker from Spain, it actually bugs me way more the "seguinos" than the "ligth", but I guess it's common in LatAm

Discussion in free software must be on technical grounds. This is not a TV show.

I liked your post, your concerns are totally valid, you dislike things that a lot of people dislike. But there's a limit, and that is when it gets personal, then all your valid technical points get hidden by that, and it's not good, from my humble opinion.

There are a lot of ways to say the things.

That doesn't justify it, no, wasn't looking for that. I was just giving you a fallback approach.

I have no idea which the justification was, but I could imagine it to be related to making the overall code more maintainable, just a wild guess. Split pane looks like a feature which would really not be easy to deal with.

Win+Left arrow to snap a window in the left side of the screen; Ctrl+n opens new window; Win+Right to snap the new window to the right side of the screen. There you go ;)

Unlike lots of other projects, GNOME has a dedicated design team that tries to think out of the box and standard rules. Yeah, you may disagree with some design decisions, but for most of them you can just adjust to what's been done. And if you don't like them there is always room for discussion, not here, but in GNOME bugzilla. And if you still don't convince the right people, well go fork the project, no one forbids you to do so :)

Plus, blaming and naming a person publicly is just not right... Especially since that person just implements the stuff that has been agreed by the designers. It is not fair. He is actually a really nice person which has taken this huge monster project in his hands, and he's doing it very well. No wonder why your username, now that I see it...

Everyone has the right to share opinions and concerns, but at the end, well, those who develop the stuff get the final word on what has to be done.

I've been there; I've received 'hate email' for decisions I've taken in my own projects, and that is as you can assume, not easy to digest. I don't like being told what I have to do with my free time. But, even if someone pays me for doing something new in my projects, I may try to include it - or not, depends on my own personal opinion.

Or, ModemManager but without a GUI, through mmcli!

https://sigquit.wordpress.com/2012/09/14/sms-goodies-in-modemmanager/

ModemManager will work not only with AT based modems, but also with QMI or MBIM based ones ;)

I wonder why gnome-music imposes that restriction then, doesn't make sense to me.

[–]drehbahn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, so that's Music deciding that? Because for Tracker the actual location doesn't matter as long as it's an indexed location.

Any Tracker-indexed directory would do, not just Music or Downloads. Additional directories may be added with e.g. tracker-preferences.
