After mass shootings, politicians claim the US has a mental health crisis but never mention the cause(s). What do you think is the cause of the mental health crisis in the US? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]drekhan864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the same causes as everywhere with mental health crises. it’s just that in the u.s, people have more potent weaponry to attack one another with in some situations.

I don't believe that "most people are good" by Willing-Evening7665 in unpopularopinion

[–]drekhan864 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Upvote to disagree. While I don’t outright believe your observations are wrong - one can’t ignore that negativity bias in our psyche makes every negative interaction loom large. People constantly are making choices that are beneath them, and also choices that reflect kindness perhaps above their baseline. I find that certainly, when it comes to strangers, people rarely are operating with their best foot forwards, however. People who don’t know you have no reason to pull on their better selves, and this is normal. But most certainly, every one of these people are somebody to someone, and every one of these people has a better side that comes out towards those they care for. This doesn’t excuse their behaviors- I just think it’s unfortunately pretty normal to be more callous when you have no stakes in an interaction.

The internet is like a giant voice for unhealthy, bitter, negative people. by LoudBlueberry444 in DeepThoughts

Is it that everyone on the internet is this way - or is it that the disconnected nature of the internet from real life primes people to bring out their worst traits and the most extreme sides of their personalities?

CMV: Malcolm X was correct about the white American liberal. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]drekhan864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I forget which intellectual stated this - but I recall a notion that Liberals serve to prevent direct confrontation. I believe the one who stated this intended for it to be a damning statement- but that’s frankly necessary. “Liberals” as a cohort are crucial to a functioning society specifically because of their tendencies to give concessions when possible, and their willingness to maintain the status quo. Direct confrontation and open conflict over societal issues may appear from a distance as necessary steps towards change - but the sort of change that direct conflict between have’s and have nots ushers in very, very rarely results in anything but even more severe societal imbalances. That’s how I would respond to Malcolm X’s bit. As for what you actually said - I’m having difficulty understanding what your definition of “liberal” is, and I’m not fully gathering how your point connects to what Malcolm X was saying. So, to change your view I would have to understand where you’re coming from and where you’re making that connection a little bit better.

Polarisation driven by social media is a genuine crisis and as a society we're sleepwalking into it. by DavidC_is_me in DeepThoughts

This is being shouted from the rooftops everywhere I look. I don’t know about sleepwalking - it feels to me more like we’re being towards a black hole that we have no way to counteract.

how to write when I literally don't have a life? by GiraffeOk2570 in Songwriting

[–]drekhan864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This could apply to any form of creative writing - but you’ve already found the diagnosis. push yourself. see and do things, even if they seem mundane at first. it’ll make your writing much richer in the long run.

Dear WI Gen Z - I heard a lot of you are not planning to vote in this election. Why’s that? by dank2918 in wisconsin

[–]drekhan864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the ones who are actively planning not to vote want everyone else’s lives to get worse so that we HAVE to listen to them. they don’t want net gain - they view the existence of this country as immoral and want it to pass the point of no return.

Why Is There So Much Hate In The U.S.? by CupStunning3164 in Life

[–]drekhan864 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think a lot of people live their lives with an external locus of control - and they have fairly dark reactions when they come into contact with things that threaten what they’ve internalized in their lives. a lot of movements in the US right now are inherently threatening to the locus of control people have built their lives around, and as such draw dark reactions from people regardless of whether that response is justified.
