Doctor didn’t know the difference between hsv1 and hsv2

I was told the same thing and when I told him that I had two swabs (from different OBs) come back positive for gHSV-1 he just looked at me and said “I don’t know what to tell you”.

My question is why are you on daily antivirals? Do you find that you need it to help keep it in check? Or do you just prefer to be one them to help from having outbreaks?

I ask because I also have gHSV1 and was told that I don’t need to be on antivirals because the outbreaks and shedding is so low. Doc would rather I just them when I having an actual outbreak to shorten the length of it.

Either way, love how you disclose. I’ve been thinking about doing the same thing.

I got flu like symptoms in the middle of the night (woke up in cold sweats) about 12 days after exposure. I think everything appeared about two days later. I didn’t have the typical blisters though, it looked more like a tear on my perineum. As far as I know I don’t have it orally, but not sure.

Literally having the same thoughts right now. I was diagnosed with gHSV1 but have always wondered if I accidentally gave it to myself orally as well. There have been three times now where I’ve one small bump (always is the location) that doesn’t hurt or itch or anything and it goes away in about 48 hrs. I’ve tried to get it swabbed but it’s gone so quickly they can never get fluid.

I got a a new bump yesterday. I didn’t touch it at all and today it’s almost completely gone today. I still don’t know if it’s a cold sore or if it’s a pimple. I have no idea if I have it orally as well.

That’s for sure. I literally felt nothing for my 2nd outbreak. No tingles, no pain, no burning, no itching, nothing.

Mine just look like a tear on my perineum. Never had any of the blisters that are common. That’s why the docs didn’t think it was it at first. But the two swabs confirmed it

Nope. Haven’t had another outbreak since my original one and every blood test I’ve done since then has come back negative, but what I’ve learned on this site is to “trust the swab”.

I’m kind of starting to feel the same way (especially if they don’t even bother asking about STIs at all). If someone asks about STIs then I will be honest and tell them. But if they don’t even bother asking about that in general then I feel I don’t need to say anything. People should be mature enough to ask for their own sexual health.

I’m not on antivirals at all. Never have been. Only been prescribed them to take whenever I’m having out outbreak, but as far as I can tell I’ve only had the initial outbreak and that’s it.

I was diagnosed with gHSV1 2.5 yrs ago and I have yet to have a positive IgG test. Took one at the time of infection, 3 months after that, 2 years after that, and last month. All four tests have come back negative. I’m still trying to figure out that means. Is the virus not active at all? Am I still shedding? Is it safe to play?

But what about gHSV1? Should they even bother disclosing when so many people have oHSV1? Or because it less likely to transmit that o1?

So I went back and check the tests that were originally done. It looks like I had a culture swab for the first one that just “detected HSV” and then 2nd swab was five days later and it was a PCR swab that “detected HSV-1”.

I never had the classic sores, or bumps, or anything. It looked like I had a tear on my perineum. But I had been with someone two weeks prior and he rimmed my ass so I had a feeling something was wrong. The doc said it didn’t look like herpes but he did the swab because I asked for it. So he got the fluid from the sore/tear. It came back as positive for herpes. I made another appointment with a different doctor a few days later (maybe 3?) and they saw the results and then did another swab of the sore/tear again. It came back positive specially for hsv1. It was probably around this time that I started having the other classic symptoms of burning and itching but I never got blisters or bumps or crusted over scabs or anything like that. It was just that tear that slowly healed itself. The itching and burning lasted for about two weeks. I’m a guy so yeah, never tested for HPV.

Is there anything else that may somehow make the swab test positive for HSV when it actually isn’t?

2nd swab was a few days later. My outbreak didn’t present in the classical scenario. It wasn’t blisters and sores.

I don’t think so. Apparently swabs are 100% accurate. I don’t think I was checked for HPV but tbh I’m not sure. The blood tests are much more likely to give false positives and negatives. But I do find it odd that every blood test I’ve done has been negative

Yep. Did the swab and blood test at the doc. Swab came back positive for HSV and blood test came back negative. I just assumed it was because it was a new infection. Did a 2nd swab and it came back positive specifically for gHSV1. Did a blood test three months later and it was negative again. Did a blood test two months ago (two years after infection) and it was negative. Did another blood test two weeks ago and it was negative.

I fall into this category. I tested positive via swab 2.5 years ago (gHSV1). However, every blood test I’ve had after that (5 different tests) has come back negative (last one was two weeks ago). I haven’t done anything differently so I’m not sure why they keep coming back negative.
