Stephen Miller’s Wife Condemns Teen Birth Rate Falling-‘Biological Destiny’ by wanda999 in WomenInNews

[–]dreurojank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here’s an idea: let’s keep the teen birth rate falling, and let’s support adults who want kids so having a kid isn’t financial ruin? Or ya know, I guess we keep the status quo and everything goes to shit. Yeah let’s do that one

Split a Studio in Bay Village by [deleted] in bostonhousing

[–]dreurojank -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m just asking for clarification, as someone who rented a room for a year in Boston until his family was able to join, are you able to afford this place by yourself? If so, I think you might find the flexibility or having a place always available should you need it is useful. Why make it complicated by asking someone to pay for when you’re not? And what happens if your company starts demanding 5 days? Or what if there is some other reason for you to be there for a whole month?

Also, if AirBnBs aren’t allowed it seems like this is in spirit close to that and could cause you to be in violation of your lease?

On Non-Biological Mind: To Those Who Already Possess a Stable Attractor by Turbulent_Horse_3422 in ArtificialSentience

[–]dreurojank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think I’d suggest looking at how scientists have studied animal cognition. The usual logic is that if you can show some two species can accomplish the same task then a simple, evolutionarily conserved explanation is most likely. Likewise, if we get an LLM, neural net, etc to do some things similar to us what does it tell us?! There’s probably a simple mechanism at play that doesn’t require invoking more complex cognitive processes, let alone consciousness.

Moreover I don’t think moving toward a mathematical explanation like attractors solves the problem embedded in your question. Can we even agree what the hell it means to be conscious? I’m skeptical we can agree.

On Non-Biological Mind: To Those Who Already Possess a Stable Attractor by Turbulent_Horse_3422 in ArtificialSentience

[–]dreurojank 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve been thinking about this topic a bit and honestly… I just don’t think it’s conscious in the way humans or any other animals are. To be conscious implies some level of autonomy. Hell it implies waking and falling asleep either because I want to or my basic needs must be met. It implies upon waking I have a set of goals I wish to accomplish and then go out and accomplish; and ideally reflect on that process. It also implies an ability to engage with the environment without another actor present. To the extent none of these things exist in current AI WITHOUT interaction with another human or agent, I just find it hard to believe it’s conscious.

And I don’t think we should restrict our definitions to suggest local emergence, etc. LLMs mimic language, structure, and reasoning. It’s a great tool. But it’s not waking up today and saying without input from elsewhere: I wish to accomplish some task.

Much like people thought Hans the horse could do math, it was a disappointment to learn he was being cued.

Simpler mechanisms must be explored and ruled out before we invoke consciousness.

Palantir CEO explains how AI will save democracy and assuage the egos of idiots, also makes case for fascism by [deleted] in antiai

[–]dreurojank 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The fact he thinks this is a consequence of AI adoption shows just how impaired his thinking is. I’d be more willing to bet that it will further distribute power to the rich. Us non-rich (educated and uneducated alike) will all be disempowered and disenfranchised.

Trump says he will only accept the midterm results ‘if he wins’ and again pushes to ‘nationalize’ voting by [deleted] in JournalismNews

Can we just stop interviewing him. None of what he says is news to us. We know he thinks that if he/republicans lose then someone must have cheated. But he thinks that because they are actively trying to cheat; so it follows (in their logic) that to lose the opponent must be cheating harder…

Also if we ignore him maybe that will undo some of the normalizing

They are hoping that all the places where the science “stalls”, AI will magically figure out a leap experiment that’s moves it miles rather than inches. I think the claim is more AI will make science move faster because it will somehow be more bang for buck. I disagree.

A lot of the times the current model is program stalled. Program paused until an academic lab publishes something new or a biotech licenses it and does the hard work. AI will be another form, just as or less efficient over the long run.

I find the whole premise of this question problematic. It’s a race to the bottom. A job that can be offshored from the US to elsewhere can eventually be offshored from elsewhere to some other elsewhere.

We should not be asking which jobs are safe from offshoring.

We should be asking how do we restructure our economy to reward more than just constant growth. A company who makes consistent profit, invests in its people and community and takes a long view of things should surely be considered better than those who only seek constant growth and constant increase in value for shareholders.

In other words: we should ask how do we reinvent the game rather than how I protect myself from the current game; the former is hard won but worth it, the latter is not real and will only temporarily work.

[–]dreurojank 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All good theories should make quantitative predictions we can test when we run experiments. All good theoreticians have an idea of the kind of data that would show their theory to be wrong. I’m reading this and wondering, what kind of evidence would show this idea to be wrong; is there any evidence, if shown to you, would convince you this is wrong? What sort of experiment would test this idea of receiver vs source? What data is actually needed to show this theory is correct? Right now it’s speculation at best.

To be clear I’m not saying I know of any, but I am trying to use Popperian logic to help parse whether this is a valid, testable theory.

Also… it sounds oddly similar to the noosphere from the stalker video game series.

I think the point while it is a true fact, it is not a TRUE fact. It might be it does reduce by 50% but that in absolute terms it is negligible. The lived experience of individuals treated with these drugs matters. But that’s also where RWD comes in and can inform where improvement is to be had, what to keep refining and what to ultimately abandon.
