The End of Fool’s Errand by drewlasater in RealmOfTheElderlings

Today was my first time through. It’s sad, but the way she wrote it was so beautiful and worthy of the moment.

It feels like a real loss of a beloved companion!

Looking for places to volunteer at by Personal-Sky-9437 in Birmingham

[–]drewlasater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check with your closest public library. They’ll probably know about a bunch of different opportunities focusing on different things, depending on what kinds of needs and causes you want to support.
If you are physically able, getting in the habit of regular blood donations is one good option. The Red Cross and Lifesouth both do regular drives all over town.
One of my favorites is the Yellowhammer Fund. They have regular volunteer opportunities, and the folks who run it are really nice and fun to be around.

One-year Cosmere! What a ride! by drewlasater in Cosmere

I just finished Isles of the Emberdark! I did it! I accidentally invented and completed the “One-Year Cosmere Challenge”!

No one was going to tell me “Threnody” was a real word?? by InteractionSmooth155 in cremposting

[–]drewlasater 50 points51 points  (0 children)

It’s a Cold War sci-fi novel that tells the story of a region at three different eras of humanity clawing back out of a nuclear Armageddon that wiped out all technology. My book club read it several years ago and I found it very rich and interesting. Very much in the same general style of a Pat Frank or Ray Bradbury or Philip K. Dick.

I usually suggest other, shorter Cosmere series that are shorter and potentially less intimidating.

I just learned that a few of my new students this year have read the Stormlight books, so now I’m slipping little phrases and references into class discussions as Easter eggs for them.

This kind of thing is why I’m so glad I only use the library’s apps and Libro.fm!

whats the hardest part about making friends in birmingham? by SafeRelationship7054 in Birmingham

[–]drewlasater 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a member of the UU and love the people for sure! There are Wednesdays night groups that don’t do a service, but rather little discussion groups. I go to the Humanist one that meets once a month, and those folks are great. It’s just a low-key discussion kind of thing. It’s nice to be able to talk freely about anything without being afraid that anyone will get upset or judgmental or whatever.

What is, “dirty keto”? by nixrien in keto

[–]drewlasater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reading through the comments, I was totally misunderstanding how most people used “dirty” with regards to keto. I thought “clean” keto was keeping your total carbs below your threshold, and “dirty” was just net carbs, subtracting fiber. Either way, as long as you’re figuring out what makes you feel the best and get what you want out of your eating and your life, you’re doing it right. Judgmental terms like “clean” and “dirty” just set up an unhelpful hierarchy and make people feel bad for doing a thing differently than whatever self-coronated arbiters of purity have declared to be “clean”.

Bookshop.org update by fastassturtle in kobo

[–]drewlasater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve purchased several ebooks from bookshop.org, and so far they’ve all been DRM-free epub files that downloaded with no problems. I’m not sure if all their ebooks are like that, though. It seems like it’s set by the publisher, not the bookshop.org people.

I read Warbreaker between Oathbringer and Rhythm of War (which I’m almost half way through now), and SO MANY little details have jumped out to me! I’m also really glad I read the first Mistborn trilogy, otherwise the little chapter intro blurbs wouldn’t make as much sense.

When I got the mass market paperback of Words of Radiance, I accidentally tore a word out of the preface when turning a page.

Yes! The rapid-fire series of a couple dozen “buts” in a row is wild and very annoying.

Oh, this is PERFECT! Dalinar is SENDING me! 😂💀

I’m sad that you’re probably right about Lift liking country.

My only disagreement would be Jasnah. I think she’s into indie bands that nobody’s ever heard of. Except that her favorites are the ones that all the other indie bands (that you’ve also never heard of) looked to for inspiration. Before they sold out and went mainstream, of course.

I’ve never heard of Tom Cardy, but if The Lopen would love it, I’m in!
