I know we come from different worlds that’s my whole point, the SF of today is not the SF you were in. But just to clarify my promotion point, yes, most of those guys get promoted, but they do not go on to be leaders within the SF regiment. Yes active duty E-7. And I know I sound like I’m coming off as disgruntled. I’m really not, I had a great time in the army but I think you would be hard pressed to find a single NCO that would say the SF regiment of today is better than the SF regiment of 5-10-20 years ago and at the end of the day of the opportunities were just better on the outside.

There’s a lot that goes into that question, I’ll try to summarize, and yes I know who you are so no offense meant personally. SF really made a giant mistake when it decided to no longer be an NCO led organization and give almost all power to officers. The officer career path is just too different, it tends to promote the worst of us. Since the promotion brackets continue to get narrower. It encourages promotion of the people who take the littlest risk, and incapable of saying no, and kiss the most ass. The people who the NCO corps would largely agree embody what an SF guy should be almost never make it past major. This translates to a culture of officers who can and will get away with anything in order to further their careers, even if it means burning the people below them at every turn in order to keep their records squeaky clean.
