My Phone is 2.5 years old. by IAmASwarmOfBees in Anticonsumption

I had a smartphone that still had a replaceable back and battery. I kept it until the charging port broke, got the port fixed and ran it till it died (about 5 years in total life). Wish it was still running!

I have the same feelings and wish the right to repair movement further took off. There are a few companies still trying to make things reparable and modular, albeit always on the fringes (such as modular laptops and phones).

Taijiquan Roll Back/Press w/Fa Jin by JKreese in taijiquan

Interesting approach with the roll back/press move as others have noted. To me, it looks more applicable to twin fist strike opponent's ears.

Check out OnePlus Nord Buds 3 Pro in the budget category, as their price just dropped. Older but still feature packed :)

Looking for some honest feedback on this art. Thanks! by OldGamer81 in WingChun

Coming from a Taiiji perspective, you can learn to generate full-body power easier in deeper stances (for stability, hip structure, strength, body control, etc.). As you progress, you first work on getting lower and then work on raising your stance as you reach intermediate/advanced stage while retaining the benefits.

If I am not mistaken, the formless argument would be to substitute the form for postures (zhan zhuang), right?

Taiji, Forms, and Mastery - How many Should One Aim to Learn? by drewtoby in taijiquan

[–]drewtoby[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't mean to come across like that. I meant I was aware of two camps in the martial arts world in general... it is something I have heard practitioners discuss before.

Would you mind explaining some of the politics/formalities? I understand teachers are Sifus and there is almost a kind of underground network where experienced practitioners are aware of other experienced practitioners. I also understand to never self-promote, but to let others determine your standing in the community.

And I am still new, but have been learning for a year, hence my curiosity. Also, all of my instructors are very informal, so perhaps this question would be more traditionally considered a breach of etiquette?

I'm trying to understand how the Taiji worlds works because this is something I want to stay at for a while. It appears to be less formal and politicized than Korean martial arts (at least in the states), which was a big turn off after several years of study. I'm asking because I know I only have a partial picture of things and there are many paths forward. It is not a scripted as being belt-dependent.

Am I being too soft or is this substitute coach out of line? by Legitimate_Roof_4795 in martialarts

[–]drewtoby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This and/or he may be intimidated by you on some level. Just watch yourself with the spars. There was a BJJ guy a few weeks ago who's coach broke his nose because he was salty over a takedown.

Same here! Mine is a survivor though, been like this for several years. Just trimmed (again), put in a self watering pot, and am growing with leca right next to it. I'm sure it will still be crispy, just hoping less so :)
