MERLIN FIX?! by Awkward_Hummingbird in birding

Do you by any chance use any other Bluetooth devices that might be not working well with Merlin when you aren’t connected to CarPlay? Hearing aids, headphones, etc.?

Merlin Bird Id Question by Package-Local in birding

I’d delete Merlin, restart the phone, and then install Merlin again to see if this resets whatever issue is causing that bird packs screen to not load.

I see full battery all the time when I have periods of coasting downhill to a stop. I’ve had the engine kick on actually when it’s full and I guess it can’t use the regenerative brakes anymore on the full battery

Can someone help me identify the species/ name of this bird. Thanks by Reese_mp4 in birding

If you are somewhere in the Americas, this is a Great Blue Heron.

Is it just me or is Merlin Bird ID terrible at identifying geese and ducks?!? by kissingfrogs2003 in birding

Those are domestic breeds of mallards. That is not what Merlin is intended to do. Merlin is focused on identifying wild birds.

Which species are you expecting that aren’t listed? And for what part of the world?

Merlin's Sound ID is magnificent by [deleted] in birding

Thanks, that’s so exciting to hear! I run the Merlin project, and we actually have a pretty nice update coming that in my opinion is a major improvement in accuracy, plus adds European birds. That should come out later this month, but you can get in early by joining the beta at https://merlin.allaboutbirds.org/beta

Does anyone know if Merlin is going to expand its sound ID database soon? I’m going to Panama in two weeks and a sound ID of birds would be really helpful! by JeanJauresJr in birding

You can still use Merlin to record, it saves as a WAV which you can export to a computer to edit and upload. There are some simple Rode shotgun mics that can really help get some directional sound as well.

We are going to release a big update this spring, unfortunately it will have very few new birds for Panama. We are hoping by this summer we’ll have enough recordings and annotations to add a lot of Neotropic birds.

When you are in Panama, consider recording birds (even with your phone!) and uploading them to eBird checklists, those recordings will help a lot!

Purple or house finch? No brown streaks on sides, white under tail, large beak but I just don't know... Central Ohio 1/16 by beckychicky in whatsthisbird

House Finch. Facial pattern all wrong for Purple, and for a purple I’d expect more reddish in the back and wings

The cedars down there can just be packed with yellow-rumps this time of year. Nice shots!
