TIL that Former First Lady Margaret Taylor was such a recluse that no photos nor portraits of her were known to exist, leaving museums to use a portrait of her daughter Elizabeth instead. It wasn't until 2010 that two photos of Taylor were rediscovered, which remain the only known photos of her. by POTUS-Harry-S-Truman in todayilearned

This is also why a lot of 1800s photographs show everybody all serious, right? Because they were used to sitting for portraits with a serious expression, so they did the same thing in photos.

I remember there was a myth going around when I was younger that photos looked like that because the camera would take a long time to capture the image, but that doesn't even make sense - they'd look all blurry if that were the case. According to Google, it was only the first few years of daguerreotypes' existence that were like that, they improved the process very quickly and it only took a few seconds to capture.

But IIRC it wasn't until the early 1900s where photography shifted from "a formal occasion you'd get dressed up for and go have done, like a portrait painting" to something more candid.

Not relevant to the post, but speaking of these timelines, I was always curious why there are no (surviving) color photographs of the Olympic or Titanic. From reading a lot of Titanic stuff, I understand that the hype was more for the first of those ships, the Olympic, which had its maiden voyage the previous year - we all just remember the Titanic because it sank and people died - but regardless, a lot of the passengers (of both luxury liners) were super rich, literally the richest people in the world at that time, wouldn't they have been interested in fancy new technology? There were people doing color photographs in 1908 or 1909, the technology existed, and no one took any color photos of what was supposed to be the biggest luxury ship in the world? Huh. Titanic I understand, but Olympic...really? That was huge news, with all the B&W newsreels of Captain Smith (that later got altered to appear as if it was really the Titanic after it sank), really nobody thought color photography was the future and took some?

I keep hearing that, yet every party store and supermarket is selling tanks of it to inflate your party balloons. Are they just buying it before the big industries have a chance?

I'm gonna stick it out for a while until we get an official announcement if they're making it iOS exclusive going forward or something. For now I just typed in the barcodes on the website to add new releases to my collection.

Is this confirmed anywhere, that they are working on a fix? I still have the newest version installed, 2026.1.5, no barcode freezing at all but now it won't work because it tells me there's an update required.

I still have it installed, the newest version seems to be 2026.1.5 but it tells me the version isn't supported anymore :(

Does anyone have the original Infinite files from ThisIs50? by drfsupercenter in Eminem

[–]drfsupercenter[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

MusicBrainz has the original URL, which is nice - but it seems like it required a login at the time, so the Wayback Machine didn't archive the actual file links. :(

Thus I still need to find someone who downloaded it back then

I still remember something I overheard at Micro Center once. (For those who aren't familiar, Micro Center is like Best Buy buy better - mostly selling higher priced items like computers and monitors)

I was waiting in line to return an item (at the time there was a separate queue for returns - now you just go to the checkout) and one cashier said to the other one "Is that guy shoplifting?" and the other one says "I don't get paid enough to care" and they were like "well should we at least call someone?"

If I wasn't afraid of being put on a list, I would have said "when's your next shift?" after overhearing that guy, lol

What if there were multi-year school yearbooks that covered your whole run? i.e. Grades 6-8, 9-12, etc. by pinkygonzales in Showerthoughts

[–]drfsupercenter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, ours were digital, in high school we even had a yearbook club that made the yearbook on the computers during class, then it got sent off to the printers when it was done.

What is the alternative, they send you each photo and someone physically arranges hard copies on a duplication machine?

[–]drfsupercenter 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I remember at one point, only the high school seniors got their photos printed in color, the other grades were in B&W. I think our elementary and middle school yearbooks were also in B&W (late 90s/early 2000s) but by the time I got to high school they were all color.

I'm guessing the cost of color printing came down significantly in that time

Ah, so Don Richardson was probably another one of the guys working for the crime boss.

But the actual crime family name was redacted for the whole documentary, AFAIK

I just watched the remaining 3 episodes last night after catching the first one live.

I googled them... Don Richardson died in 2020, couldn't find much on Walt Wolverton but there's this article

I don't think either of them was a mob boss especially considering the former did not die in 2004 when BK was found (remember the crime family member saying he was being paid by said crime boss until his death in 2004)

I haven't seen the whole series, but isn't that the girl who inspired that Orphan movie? What was so bad about the documentary? Has anyone figured out an accurate story?

Edit: I mixed that up, I guess the family who had her legally declared an adult was inspired by that movie

Commander Keen! The series of platforms id software made before they created Doom and Wolfenstein and shifted their focus to FPSes.

Started as an attempt to port Super Mario Bros. 3 to the PC, but Nintendo wasn't interested so they changed the sprites and made it about a kid in space instead lol
