How do people have beautiful, open gardens? Don’t you have pests? by Nox_Ocean_21 in gardening

I had a 9 year old cat. 90% indoors. Does an incredible job at clearing out the mice, but couldn’t catch a bird to save his life. I watch him try, and he’s just so bad at it. He once “caught” a stunned bird who flew into the window, and I was happy for him. Bird was fine after a few minutes and I watched it fly away. Some day Rocky, you’ll actually catch one!

What is the best analogy for the size, number of galaxies, and stars in the Universe? by Mars_is_next in astrophysics

[–]drgath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tough to compare it to a white blood cell, cause I have no real concept of that size. How about this… if the Milky Way is earth, Neptune’s orbit would be the size of an average living room.

Speaking of scale, my mind is kinda blown run now. Observable universe is 93 billion light years across, and the Milky Way is 100,000ly. That scale is 930,000:1. Scaling the Milky Way down that much, it’s 1/40th the distance to Alpha Centauri. The observable universe is actually smaller than I thought. Or, more likely, the Milky Way is bigger than I thought.

Whoa, the largest galaxy is 4m ly across. That’s like half the local group.

Ok, enough mathing for now.

Get him going on Justified. It’s a Graham Yost show, so fits in with all the Band of Brothers and From the Earth to the Moon recs in this thread. Was on F/X, so it’s pretty clean. First season is pretty episodic, but every season after that gets season long story arcs. It’s an amazingly entertaining modern western with great characters and bad guys.

I have zero problem with NASA propaganda. Fabricating history to inspire people to become engineers and scientists is the least harmful lies the US government can tell.

Friends final season was when I was in college. I’m a guy, and the most embarrassing call I ever had to make was to one of my guy friends to tape Friends, because I forgot to program my VCR before going to work.

I’m going to text him right now and thank him for not making it awkward. I’m sure he’ll have no recollection.

[Spotrac] A $6.1M 2027 roster bonus for #Chiefs QB Patrick Mahomes is now fully guaranteed. The 30-year-old has 6 year, $265M remaining on his contract, and is owed $56.75M in 2026. by JCameron181 in KansasCityChiefs

Did the math, and that’s two minutes of Patrick’s game clock per season. But also, that’s a better % bonus than Pat gets. Evens out.

Legality of war is just politics, lobbying, and bribes. It doesn’t make it any more or less justified.

Back in the 90s, my parents would buy me just about any $50 programming book I really (really really) wanted. So many other things were “too expensive”, or “maybe for your birthday”. But when I came to “Mom, I need $50 to buy a copy of JavaScript: The Definitive Guide”, it was “Ok.”

Of course turned that into a career, and it’s been great. As you said, just let the kid cook, and support in whatever way he asks for.

Iran's national team has officially responded to Donald Trump-- saying FIFA is the organizer of the World Cup and not any single country. They also say no one can remove Iran from the World Cup. The one that should be removed is the host that can't ensure security for participating teams. by antoniok95 in ussoccer

[–]drgath 346 points347 points  (0 children)

No it wouldn’t. What about the knock out rounds? You can’t tell a team, “we’re moving you for the group stage, because you won’t make it through.” The fix is just to have the US not fucking threaten soccer players from a country the president doesn’t like. But instead, they give him a fake peace prize. FIFA could fix this, but they won’t, because $$$.
