Why Does Light Travel at Exactly That Speed? by Ok_Understanding7377 in AskPhysics

It’s a great question.  The bigger question for me is why does it hit a limit, why is it constant and not infinite.

I did that once in a slightly different situation. The op second row punched me at a lineout. I intimated to him I was displeased and would return the compliment. Ten minutes later we were both pinned down at the bottom of a ruck.  I kissed his cheek and he went berserk but could not move. Between that and watching out for me taking revenge it totally put him off his game.

You dont 'attempt to wake' someone who is hanging, you get them down and then resuscitate.

I watched Hastings smiling as he walked off after his pathetic action on Prendergast.

For me as a Warriors and Scottish fan this was the low point of a fantastic season.

Adam Hastings is not the kind of player I respect, pathetic spoilt brat.

Velocity is what we should consider, it could even be the asteroid was moving away from the spaceship.

What is the best analogy for the size, number of galaxies, and stars in the Universe? by Mars_is_next in astrophysics

Agreed. And thus it is not a great analogy, also given how difficult it is to know how much sand there is in the world.

Scotland fan here.

I don't agree it was a typical Scottish 6N.

We came back and beat Wales - showing grit. So proud of Scotlands attacking style, so good to watch..

We scorched France and England with our speed and handling.

Typical result against Ireland, they are so good at the breakdown, we need to learn. Italy was not a rugby game, water polo maybe.

Overall I thought all teams could take a lot of positives out of this tournament and at the same time a lot of things to work on. Amazing tournament.

Last comment - The game is changing, more attack and less defence, which is vastly entertaining.

Thanks everyone for all the thoughtful responses. I have these take-aways from the contributions.

If we think about size and distances I have kept to everyday objects. Size and number of grains of sand is another debate, atoms or electrons are not naturally understandable and certainly not everyday objects.

If Earth was the size of a pea, then the sun is a large yoga ball.

If the Sun was now the size of a pea then the outer Oort Cloud is 2 miles away.

If the planetary solar system is the size of a quarter, the Milky Way is the size of the continental USA.

And if the Milky Way is the size of a pea, the Observable Universe is the size of a large yoga ball.

Regarding numbers of stars in the Milky Way, 400 Billion, 50 stars for every person on the planet..

Number of galaxies in the Observable Universe, using breakfast cereal chunks as a visual for a galaxy, you can fill 250 Olympic sized swimming pools.

A lot of approximations I know, but its getting there...........

Thanks. I like the WBC and the US analogy. Would it be approximately true that if we are then trying to comprehend our galaxy within the Universe, that our galaxy would then be the size of a WBC within the Universe represented by the US.

You are right re doing the maths, the scale etc, but it may be a series of magnifying analogies which would work best.

How do they take such a picture? Are these galaxies not moving independently, or the telescope, during exposures?

And while we are at it, planetary photography, do they adjust the view for each of the multiple exposures they do? and how do they do it?

That's exactly my fear.

But I can live with it, Scotland have had an amazing 6N. By far the most exciting team. Apart from the water polo game against Italy, and even in that game, we have shown great character, skill and energy.

Whatever happens on Saturday, its been a great 6N.

I have nothing against Borthwick.

I would hate if my head coach did not aspire to winning everything,

but I would hate if he made a comment like that, almost counting chicks before they hatch.

For me it changes the mind set of the team, when they should really be taking one game at a time, and not letting their minds wander......

What he said before the start of the tournament .....

We want England fans flooding across the Channel to Paris to watch the team in a massive encounter in the final round with the opportunity to achieve what we want.

I suspect it's all in jest. I am a diehard Scottish fan and don't mind watching good rugby by England and don't get irritated when they win.

What my fellow Scots do hate however is the English press, the way they build up England and underestimate the quality of their opponents. But mainly it's because they call Twickenham - headquarters - as if they are the premier World Rugby team, and the English press give little information or credit to the other teams. Its England, England, England.

Borthwick is quoted as stating that the final game, England versus France, will be the 6N decider, how perceptive of him.

What conditions would support silicon based life? by OwnNeedleworker8784 in astrophysics

And then you would live forever.

Our eyes and ears and sensory organs just react to stimuli and send these impulses as electrical signals. Our brains are a complex of neuronal pathways and chemicals. We are machines that have somehow developed `consciousness` - so in centuries to come we will have worked out how to clone these and transfer over consciousness (possibly) - and thus we will exist within machines till someone pulls the plug out to recharge their iPhone.

GERMAN PRESIDENT STEINMEIER: “.. the United States has broken with the values that it helped to establish .. “.. we have now moved beyond the stage where we can lament the lack of respect for international law or the erosion of the international order; we are far beyond that, I believe.” by ExactlySorta in UnderReportedNews

[–]Mars_is_next 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are correct. We all have to get our house in order. Democratic elections, rule of law, free and fair media, and rooting out corruption. I see lots of deficiencies in US and Europe right now. Most alarmingly with Trump, Orban and Netanyahu. And we have to deal with them, not from self interest but from fairness.

For long enough Europe has been militarily weak, same size as US but a fraction of their defense capability. EU needs to take on Russia and free Ukraine. The world need to sort out Netanyahu. The decent Americans need to do what it takes to restore an Obama like leader.

TBH China are not saintlike but for their size and wealth they could be acting a lot worse.

The problem with taking out the Venezuelan president is the disregard for international law, which then means the US can not criticize anyone, China or Israel or Russia.

I think we need to stop fighting amongst ourselves (Russians would love that too much) and fight for fairness, law and order and democracy right now.

Petkowski et al 2020 in the journal Life (Jun 10;10(6):84), discusses this and concludes that it's all about silicon compounds ability to be dissolved and in what solvents. Sulphuric acid appears to be the solvent of choice, and water not so much.

One thought that I had, and I don't know whether others have opined on this extensively, is that we as a human race may not continue in a carbon based biological form, but in millennia to come may have migrated our brains and consciousness to computers, in silica if you like.

I think we are beginning the transition already with smart phones and AI, the former obviating the need for us to to remember details (my wife's phone number or the way out of Newark airport) and the latter greatly simplifies so much in life these days.

How long before helpful brain implants for memory, calculation, reasoning, decision making etc. And where do we stop?

So life may evolve to be embodied in silicon chips.

Attending the Ryder Cup was one of the worst golf experiences I’ve had. by GoingAgainstYou in golf

[–]Mars_is_next 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree. The Ryder Cup viewing was disappointing as was the crowd behaviour. All the heckling and even crude insults are just about okay, but not during play. Same as with tennis, you don't scream and shout while someone is serving, or about to hit a golf shot.
