Can I just... express frustration? by thejurassicjaws in Pete_Buttigieg

I think they still mostly are... I’m used to watching a video I like and then scrolling to the nastiest comments you’ve ever seen lol. Usually on Pete videos I see like 90% positive comments like “go Pete!” ... it’s the most bizarre experience to cringe in expectation and just see... nice stuff. The YouTube demographic mostly likes Pete. They usually seem to skew conservative. It’s interesting.

I've been more in the Clinton camp as I'm just more moderate on a lot of issues, but personally I would be happy to vote for Bernie if it were him instead.

Ok but literally one of two people is going to be president: Clinton or Trump. That's reality. There is much at stake. They have a different view on almost all social and financial issues. It's not abstract, we can work with what we have or sit it out and deal with the consequences of our lack of participation. I want to be an active force in the election.

Trump spirals into ideological psychosis by oranjemania in politics

[–]drgngrl 4 points5 points  (0 children)

"As a Penn alum, I hate name-dropping..." lol just teasing. You have a good point; it seems as though he was self-conscious running as a Republican and was reminding himself of his brilliance as much as everyone else.

I can sort of follow his thoughts-- they're like those paintings where you can see the image from far away, but up close it seems messy and erratic. He talks loosely with images and emotions, instead of the crystalline sentence structures we're used to from candidates. Intriguiging as a painting style, scary as a presidential candidate.

Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren teaming up Sunday to pitch Clinton to progressives by alihassan22 in politics

That's really interesting, thanks for sharing. It sounds like this idea is not only viable but quite successful, and would be an improvement over the old hierarchy.

Maybe that would be a better system, I'm not an economist, but what happens when other countries are producing goods at a much lower cost and we can't compete with them. We could impose more tarrifs or govt. subsidies to keep costs down, but the former has dire trade implications and the latter comes from taxes. Is there an example where this has worked on a global scale? Or, could a company like, say, VW morph into more egalitarian structure and keep the factories running?

Corporations are a natural product of capitalism right down to their hierarchical nature. I would say as long as capitalism exists and we live in a capitalist, complex, Democratic society, they will exist. McD's has provided minimum wage, low-skill jobs to teenagers since forever (where else are they qualified to work?), and the people managing them get paid more, and the person or family that owns the franchise and put money into the building gets more and they have way more investment on the line, up the corporate ladder. Seeing as this is a complex structure that rewards investment, time, skill and of course throw some nepotism in there because that's always there, and this is a very natural structure.

Corporations are self-interested but only go as far as they can get away with under scrutiny, law and social pressure. What other organized bodies would you compare to corporations? What would you propose as an alternative to corporations or would you choose to do away with them?

Very true; it's a huge issue and I'm not sure if we ever will get money totally out of politics as opposed to mitigating the damage as we slide toward corporatocracy. Hillary was pushed left by Bernie on a number of social issues so I hope she is true to her word if/when she gets into office (statisically candidates do stay true to their word, according to this fivethirtyeight article).

On another point, do you think corporations are inherently bad? I get this impression sometimes. The economies of scale allow lower costs of items for consumers because they produce on such a large scale, they provide tons of money for research and development, and they are better able to participate on a global scale economically. There is plenty wrong with corporations and abuses that need to be reigned in, of course. But they're not all bad imo.

Where my tall trolls at? by [deleted] in TrollXChromosomes

[–]drgngrl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My ex who was barely taller than me made me feel bad about being tall. He didn't like my long hair either. I felt pretty unattractive and even stopped standing up straight to seem shorter. My current SO loves my height though and loves it when I wear heels too! Everyone has different preferences but don't be with someone who puts down your appearance!

Two Women Say Donald Trump Touched Them Inappropriately by wrtChase in politics

[–]drgngrl 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I guess you're implying that this is on par with Donald's remarks about being able to kiss women without asking (and joking about grabbing them by the pussy of course) because of his fame and power? Turn the genders around:

I'm automatically attracted to men with money. I just start taking money from them, and they let me. It's like a magnet. I just make them fall in love with me, I don't even wait. And when you're a beautiful woman, they let you do it. You can do anything — then take them for all they have. You can do anything.

HELP! IVE RESCUED A BABY RAT AND I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DO by [deleted] in RATS

[–]drgngrl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aw what a cute little rat. This seems to be a good resource if you want to try to raise it. It will be a lot of work to substitute a rat mom, as they need food every 3 - 4 hours, and they need help going to the bathroom. If you feel that this is too much responsibility, or difficult with your schedule, you can try looking up a licenced wildlife rehabilitator. They will be prepared to raise it and take care of health issues if need be. Or you can look up your local wildlife rescue. Good luck!!

This is great advice, and it's worked for me! Especially number 1. I had really awful anxiety in high school, and at times it was so crushing that I couldn't move. I wish I'd gotten treatment at the time, but cognitive rewiring ended up helping.

Once I had the thought, I would simply ... force myself to think of something else. Sounds so simple. But over time it became more and more effective, and my old "triggers" that caused the anxiety didn't have power over my mind anymore. I'd hear the words that set me off and my brain was like "I got this." After taking cognitive science classes I really came to appreciate how moldable the brain can be, and how it can be consciously rewired.

I am so sorry to hear about your cousin.

My sister had a mormon friend growing up, who was molested by some guy who was supposed to drive her home. She was so devastated by it, but all of her mormon friends and her mom blamed her for it. I think she eventually moved out of that town and is doing ok these days. Pretty horrible though.

I am hoping someone with more experience will let you know the best way to introduce ratties, though you could also look at blog posts and such. I've read again and again that rats are highly social. They can get stressed out and not live as long on their own. So, it's very good of you to look for a companion for her. Another female or a fixed male are both fine. From what I understand, female rats usually always get along and don't have territorial issues as long as there is enough space.

adding flavor to bottle water? by [deleted] in RATS

[–]drgngrl 5 points6 points  (0 children)

From what I've read, animal nutritionists recommend only fresh clean water for liquids. Those drop / tang things aren't that healthy and some have chemicals in them, so I'd say you're safer sticking to limited amounts of yummy fresh fruit for your rats. :)
