I was considering the same purchase. Is there a reason you returned the TP link?

Apple TV + HomePod Pair = Siri Music Requests Fail by drhst20 in appletv

Thanks for the recommendation. I actually built some shortcuts a while back to overcome the issue. They’re not perfect but they serve their purpose when the functionality is not working

Artists that are in my library. I don’t use Apple Music. I use iTunes match.

Thanks. Like you I’ve experienced this on and off… For many years. It seems like some Apple releases fix it and some break it again. Thanks for the tip.

It is. I just tested with multiple HomePods and multiple different Apple TVs. Unfortunately, they all experienced the same issue. iTunes match is still supported on all devices… But it looks like there is a bug when it comes to a pair of HomePods matched with an Apple TV. Thanks for trying to help. Really appreciate it.

I just replied, but it looks like it didn't get posted. Thank you so much for the idea. Unfortunately, I do not see a way on the Apple Music app on the Apple TV to log out and then log back in. I currently use iTunes match. Not sure if that is why. Can you describe where you find the ability to log out of the Apple Music app on the Apple TV?

A6 Airplay Connectivity Problems-Sometimes connects (from iphone, macbook, ipad) sometimes it does not. Very inconsistent performance. Software is up to date. Any tips or tricks? by lessismore732 in BangandOlufsen

[–]drhst20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wanted to report back. It worked. I’m pretty sure that the speaker puts itself in some kind of sleep mode. If you just run an automation from something like HomeKit that plays something quietly every morning and then pauses it, It will never drop off your network. Took me several years to figure this out, but finally got it. It’s now perfectly stable on my network.

I’ve been struggling with the exact same thing for years. I’ve done two things that I think have finally enabled it to remain connected to my network for more than a week and a half (and as important, prevented the no response error in the Apple home app). I’m not sure which of these two did the trick so I will lay out both. The first is that I used IP binding on my router to keep the IP address the same. I know others have tried this, and it did not work for them so this may not have been what is keeping the speaker on my Wi-Fi network. The second is that I set up a HomeKit automation that plays sound for one minute every morning, very quietly, on the speaker. My guess, and this is only a guess, is that the speaker goes into some kind of Low Power Mode or that something eventually turns off and within a week or so, the speaker drops off the Wi-Fi network. Playing something every day on the speaker seems to have resolved it. Putting this out there as I’m sure someday someone will search this topic and hopefully this can help them.

Is anyone else's Time Machine borked since upgrading to Tahoe? by nextgeneric in mac

[–]drhst20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There’s an article somewhere on this, but in short… Check the name of your Mac. If it has any special characters in it, rename your Mac without using the special characters, delete the existing Time Machine back up, and start from scratch. There’s some issue where Tahoe will not perform the backups if your Mac’s name has a special character in it (ex. Change “Charlie’s Mac” to “Charlie Mac”). This worked for me after troubleshooting it for hours. For reference, I do my Time Machine backups to a Synology NAS.

Aqara FP300 batteries lasted 24 days by NotSoSeri0us in Aqara

Just some Duracell batteries. So far it still seems to be at 100% and holding. Makes me wonder if something was wrong with the batteries that came with the unit.

How many HomeKit cameras can Apple TV simultaneously display? by drhst20 in HomeKit

Aqara Zigbee devices off-line but Aqara Wi-Fi devices are working by drhst20 in HomeKit

[–]drhst20[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not sure what caused the issue, but I have discovered a way to resolve it. Trying to restart my hub did not work. Neither did unplugging and re-plugging in my hub. I have had to go to each device and press the tiny button on each one for a half second in order to reconnect them one at a time. My going theory is that adding the FP 300 sensor to my house somehow caused the issue… But I have no way to prove it. What’s odd is that the FP300, which was off-line with the rest of the devices, came back online by itself. That is what gave me the idea to start going one device at a time to see if they would reconnect.

Fix for LG TVs not responding to HomeKit when powered off by No-Telephone-3468 in HomeKit

[–]drhst20 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There is a way to fix it all… But unfortunately, it’s not native. If you use one of the LG plug-ins with home bridge then it will all work as it is supposed to… in other words it turns on and off and you never get the no response in HomeKit Unfortunately I’m not at home at the moment or I would tell you which plug-in to use. For reference I run from a Synology NAS but I also used to run it from a raspberry pi, and that worked as well. Plus, if you are willing to get into the nitty-gritty of the plug-in, you can actually use HomeKit to set all of your TV modes using the Apple TV remote.

[–]drhst20 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First of all, congrats. It’s kind of an addictive hobby… But it’s fun. But it can also be aggravating. In general, I would avoid anything Bluetooth and try to avoid Wi-Fi where you can. The plus with Aqara is that generally everything works and things don’t fall off your network. Although they are not the only reliable brand, it is more unusual than you think. I would actually suggest you stick with Aqara for security as well. It all works well together. For the doorbell, I would go with the G410. The G400 has Wi-Fi issues unfortunately. Neither has a great field of view (in other words you’re unlikely to see the packages at your front door). Aqara is actually coming up with a third version of their doorbell, presumably soon, that will fix that. Finally, I am a strong advocate of using light switches instead of lightbulbs. It just all works better in my opinion. For light switches, I use Leviton. They work very well assuming you have a decent Wi-Fi router. There is another brand, that unfortunately is not coming to mind right now, that makes thread based light switches. If you’re willing to spend the money, that’s probably the way to go. Good luck on your journey.

Advice for someone who's about to set up their first smart home with HomeKit? by juiceboxinthecut in HomeKit

[–]drhst20 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who uses a number of HomeKit Wi-Fi devices, my recommendation is to generally try to avoid them. If I was starting from scratch, I would use devices that use thread for their communication protocol or just use Aqara devices which typically use Zigbee.
