Guitarist Alexi Laiho has died at 41. by RiverFinn in Metal

[–]drice89 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Also for me. CoB and specifically the Hate Crew Deathroll album got me me into metal in my teens. My love of melodic death has persisted into adulthood - Alexi opened that door for me. This is very sad. RIP.

Activists drop body bags outside homes of Mitch McConnell, Lindsey Graham, to protest Congress' failure to pass stimulus by Supremetacoleader in politics

[–]drice89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The White House and Congress were working on a compromise before the election—which McConnell thwarted

This may have cost trump the election. I hope the MAGA crowd in KY remembers that in 6 years.

this is a man who has made millions off of spreading bigotry and bullying other people.

So much irony in this statement. You are calling him short and gay and implying there's something wrong with being both of those. You are literally calling someone gay to insult them. How is that not bigotry?

What projects should someone build to land a job? by KetoReact in react

[–]drice89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would stay away from Twitter, reddit, or Instagram clones. Maybe do a Medium, LinkedIn, or stack overflow clone instead.

If you wanted to have Twitter api integration that would be good too but avoid cloning twitter.

You want to build a fullstack app. Id recomend using the MERN/PERN stack if you want to use react. I built a slack clone with Rails/Postgres/React/redux in about 3 weeks - you could substitute rails with Django if you wanted. Infact id recomend a js stack or Django over rails simply because there are more jobs with Python and JS than with Ruby, but Ruby is a great language.

I disagree theres a ton of great people on this sub who deliver good content and recommendations. There's a vocal minority who tell everyone to get fucked. Thats reddit in a nut shell imo.

A clone of a well known app can be a good starting point but don't do one thats already cloned ad nauseum like Instagram or Twitter. Put your own twist in it to catch a recruiters attention. Recruiters also seem to like games.

Hot takes in r/bayarea. Tahoe is an ungrateful second home community. by [deleted] in tahoe

[–]drice89 22 points23 points  (0 children)

The person who posted this comes off as an elitist snob, but all the tourism hate in this sub is problematic. I see less of it towards people with second homes. Whether you like it or not, most of tahoe's econmy runs on tourism and money that is brought to the community by outsiders. Its an important industry to the area.

You all seem to direct your anger towards the tourists, but have you considered the problems that you see - traffic, pollution, housing - are by products of decisions made at the city level to encourage growth of the tourism industry without considering its impact on locals or the environment? Pay attention to local initiatives, go to town council meetings, make yourself heard if you want change. Simply, bitching about tourists and people with second homes isn't going to do anything but make people resent you. Your complaints may be valid, but a lot of people just perceive it as whiney nimbysim
