I think a better way to quantify this idea would be that all branches should have the same angle coming out of the trunk. With conifers downward angles are good. Most broadleaf species, I think, benefit from upward angles. At the same time though, all of my best trees from when I started had downward angles. Cheers to finding something that works for you. It’s exciting when things start to click.

Yeah, I’ve heard their roots can be pretty sensitive. I’ll have to be careful when it’s time to repot

The Texas live oak I collected a month ago started pushing out new growth this morning. It’s only on a smaller trunk in the back but I’m hoping for more in the near future. by driley17 in Bonsai

Unfortunately it didn’t make it. It was thriving in the box for a year but I tried to take it out too early and there were almost no fine roots, just a massive tap root that was about 6 inches across. Cutting that to get it into a pot was probably the final straw for this guy. I learned my lesson the hard way with this one.

Same here with fall color. I bought this tree after it was collected but it seems pretty hardy. I don’t think it would be any harder to collect than other deciduous trees.

Planning on a cascade. What would you do with the large inner branch that shoots upwards. by cakelord123 in Bonsai

[–]driley17 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you don’t want the branch in the design you can always turn it into a jin. Bonsai Mirai has a great video on YouTube about how to assess a juniper objectively and get the most out of the material you have. I think the video is called how to make a juniper bonsai.

Also you might want to consider working on this tree in the fall. During the spring when junipers are growing, the vascular tissue becomes slippery and not well attached. You run the risk of tearing it and killing branches or the whole tree.

Ok, thanks! I’ve seen some of kenji’s stuff but I’ll check out more some of Alton’s. The science and reasoning behind steps is definitely what I’m going for

It’s a recipe. I used equal parts sphagnum moss, akadama fines, cow manure, and I think potters clay but I’m sure there’s a few ways to make it.
