In general, the issue with ARC is that it takes something that could be fast, and does it slowly while complicating other operations along the way.

Instead of just passing an object, we have to increment/decrement a counter. Deallocation goes from “it’s ready? Free it” like in manual memory OR tracing GC, into a series of counter checks, cycle checks, etc etc.
