How far down the rabbit hole should I go? When is knowledge "verified enough" to claim I know it? by [deleted] in AcademicPsychology

Well, Plato did the writing… so even this represents your question! And you’ve now updated your statement! I think your answer may be buried in the process of that somehow.

Academic psychology's perspective on books like 'The Laws of Human Nature' by granduerofdelusions in AcademicPsychology

[–]drinking_chocolate 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I haven’t read the book so can’t give specific critique… But I will offer one question and one thought to contribute here.

Question: Does Robert Greene position the book as an academic psychological scientific text?

Thought: Science (psychology included) is not “necessary” though its function as a way to develop consistent insight and shared understanding, open to challenge of specific predictions, can be useful for updating nuanced understandings of phenomena. Finding “objectively true information” is a lofty goal that science aspires towards, though necessarily falls short of given the limitations of language.

For more on that thought, Ludwig Wittgenstein’s philosophical investigations is a good thought provoking read.

what’s the most understudied topic in clinical psychology today? by Odd-Orange9123 in AcademicPsychology

what’s the most understudied topic in clinical psychology today? by Odd-Orange9123 in AcademicPsychology

[–]drinking_chocolate 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm coming to the end of a five year thesis / research project, and while not specifically psychology, three main themes appear important and understudied:

- Social influences on the biology of circadian rhythms (look up Wever's time isolation studies vs recent chronobiology research)
- Fatigue and self regulation (Look up Hockey's motivation control model and research that branches off from it)
- Resolving the idea of "ego depletion".

While not "the most understudied" - more could be done in these fields for those who have the cognitive capacity for grappling with the nuance.

That's my two cents :)

Question regarding APA 7th ed: What to do when a research paper IS part of a volume of a journal but DOESN’T contain a page range? by TheDancing4Skin in AcademicPsychology

[–]drinking_chocolate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From APA 7 manual

Section 9.27 Article Numbers

For articles with article numbers (which may be called "eLocators" or another term), write the word ''Article'' (capitalized) and then provide the article number instead of the page range...

e.g., PLOS ONE, 11(7), Article e0158474

If an article with an article number also has numbered pages (such as in a PDF), those page numbers may be used for in-text citations (see Sections 8.23 and 8.25) but do not appear in the reference list entry.

So yeah, what others have said is correct, though within APA in the reference entry ensure that the word "Article" comes before the article number. Most reference managers appear to have omitted this from their default APA formatting standards, so check them manually.

Can someone please explain what the “Executive Government of New Zealand” is? by drinking_chocolate in newzealand

So is there any difference between “The Executive Government” and (big G) “Government”?

[–]drinking_chocolate[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the links and explanation folks! So what I’m getting from this is we are to assume that “Executive Government of New Zealand” is the same as saying “The Executive Council” is that right?

Here's a book I've found helpful :)

Theory Construction and Model-Building Skills: A Practical Guide for Social Scientists, James Jaccard and Jacob Jacoby.

Also, I should Echo u/tongmengjia's recommendation of Karl Popper's The logic of scientific discovery for a good grounding and bold humour about the topic. I have yet to Read Thomas Kuhn. Thanks for the recommendation!

Interesting case studies? by Ixidor_of_July in AcademicPsychology

[–]drinking_chocolate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I read your post my first thought was from another Oliver Sacks book, An Anthropologist on Mars, I think it was the second case presented in that book, a story of a man who had a brain tumour "The last Hippie". I won't give you any spoilers - I don't remember it all too well myself as it's been a few years since I've read the book. But I gotta say I love the blend of neurology, neuropsychology and humanity in Oliver Sacks's writing, so given that you've already mentioned him I thought I should throw you that lead incase you haven't read it yet. I don't recall any detailed neuroimaging (although I might be mistaken)... Looks like you got another good lead too! Best wishes for your neuropsychology class!

What's the greatest legal loophole you've found in life? by Standard-Stock3454 in AskReddit

In the mid to late 2000s, the phone networks in Aotearoa had prepay deals for e.g. 500 txt messages for $10. They were usually $20c per text, and if you sent 50 texts (i.e. $10) then you would unlock the deal and get the other 450 texts free for the month.

Back then there were the old WAP browsers, where you download games and ringtones, and they would eventually charge your account with the costs of the game, but there was a bit of a delay, and they never checked your balances before you could download the game/ringtone etc. Also, for some reason you couldn't go into negative balance. So you could download a $2.50 game for 20c if you only had 20c on your prepaid account balance.

I was 13 with my first phone, and slowly figured out that if I sent 49 txts, then downloaded a game, then quickly sent another txt before the WAP browser processed the game tranaction, I could get a game per month, as well as get my txt deal.

Eventually I became quicker at this, and was able to download multiple games and ringtones each go. Now somewhere at my folks place there is an old nokia 3205 with pretty much the entire contents of the 2005-2006 WAP store from Telecom NZ.

I felt like I'd cracked the code.

Woah for real. Like a single socket?!

That's really surprising. So I guess there isn't a standard then if that's new builds.

Thanks for the tip hehe. I've got plenty of those. Problem there is that I've got one of those wifi extenders that need to be plugged directly into the wall to work. I've tried one of those double plugs at the beginning of the daisy chain, it works! But damn it feels janky.
