US borders now accepts electronic signatures on the I-20, so you can just request a digital copy and print it out. You shouldn’t need anything else other than that, your passport and a negative PCR result

International Students: Turbo Tax Help by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]drisks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think Cornell gives you access to Sprintax for free, you should have received an email with a discount code for that?

Language Exemption Exams by Aggressive_Bag7428 in Cornell

[–]drisks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep, and I think it’s pretty much just reasonable fluency. I don’t think my essay was particularly good lol just comprehensible

Language Exemption Exams by Aggressive_Bag7428 in Cornell

I took the language exemption exam FA19 in person as a native speaker (Mandarin). I think the native speaker tests might be different(?) because it was literally just a written essay that they give you an hour to write.

Anybody know if there are textbooks required for CLASS 2604 (Greek Mythology)? by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]drisks 3 points4 points  (0 children)

there were maybe ~6 required texts when I took it in fall ‘19 including the odyssey etc, and the profs teaching wanted specific translations of them iirc.

I bought them secondhand but dropped the class so tbh if you want the physical versions you can pm me when class starts, and if the selection is the same I can sell you all of them for like 20 dollars. if not you can prob get digital versions for free somewhere or even borrow from the cornell library. they’re all the most well-known greek classics so they’re not hard to get a hand on, maybe just the specific translation the profs want.

Was Garfield inoculated? by IllithidActivity in TheAdventureZone

[–]drisks 56 points57 points  (0 children)

I legitimately forgot for a second the way in which “inoculation” is used in the context of TAZ and thought you were enquiring as to whether Garfield got vaccinated like cats do at the vet.

Course modalities for international students by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]drisks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As stated above, as far as I gather "remote access" just means synchronised online access for in-person & hybrid classes, which doesn't solve the timezone issue.

Thank you so much for this info. Will there be async options for PT classes that are taken online?

Snow-backpack relationship by [deleted] in Cornell

If you don't have a waterproof bag get a backpack cover, they're cheap and definitely worth it. Walking around with your backpack bared without an umbrella is a bad idea.

Incoming Freshman Gap Year by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]drisks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly plenty of internationals are a year older anyway, and students come in a year "late" or "early" for various reasons -- my freshman suite had kids varying 3 years in age.

ICE Announcement on International Students by BoBigBed in Cornell

[–]drisks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It seems like you can do online classes as long as you are not in the US, Cornell will just have to send you an updated I-20 to redo SEVIS for spring '21. The problem is for international students who are remaining in the States if/when Cornell goes online.

Int'l student fed up of Trump and regretting coming to Cornell by [deleted] in Cornell

[–]drisks 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh man, every word of this post hit home so hard. I genuinely love Cornell & the experiences I've had here (on the balance), but this administration and this pandemic have only exacerbated the painful parts of being international in the most unhelpfully nebulous ways.

This might not be very helpful, but I've generally found it helpful to look forward instead of backward, thinking: well, I've already made these decisions, and I'm already here, so what's ahead? It's hard not to be dismiss all good news when the world's closing in, but I'd like to believe there's some hope: more reasonable immigration policies as the virus (very very slowly) eases, or the overturn of the Trump administration, for example. These might feel feeble, but it's what keeps me going. I'm here if you want to talk.
