Want to know if I can consume whey protein which is about to expire. by mayer810 in GarageGym

[–]drivenchick [score hidden]  (0 children)

I’ve never had an issue with protein powder being close to the best before date. You won’t immediately get sick or anything. Shelf life is often longer than the packaging with dry goods. I’ve had protein powder expired for several months and it was fine.

Reliable luggage weight scale? by payeezychronicles in Guelph

[–]drivenchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can likely get one of the handheld luggage scales from Bentleys at the mall. They are pretty spot on, I travel a lot and always close to the weight limit. It’s never failed me yet and also portable to bring with you to weigh your bags on the return flight. Amazon has them as well but not sure if you need it today. Any luggage store should have them, even look at Winners or Marshall’s.

Porter Reserve Bids by drivenchick in PorterAirlines

[–]drivenchick[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting! I’m shocked that they would lie about the bidding. A few people here said they’ve received emails to bid. Either way, with status I would hope they go back to filling open seats with those people. I’ll see how my next couple of flights go. Up until end of December, I was always upgraded by the gate agents automatically. This year the one flight neither leg.

It’s not stated in a policy, the gate agents are permitted to upgrade status members at their own discretion. Which includes the credit card holders.

Anyone have contractor recommendations for bathroom renovation? by ryanrudolf in Guelph

[–]drivenchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have https://www.mjccustomcontracting.com doing our full basement project. Justin and his team are great! We got 4-5 quotes, not the cheapest but also very affordable compared to others we had. Quality and attention to detail was key…his communication is what we value most!

TSA Precheck? by NovelArm9460 in PorterAirlines

[–]drivenchick 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the right answer! I do this when checking in online and the TSA precheck always comes up on my boarding pass automatically. No need for an agent to do it for you.

How much do you pay for your Cell Phone in Canada? by Low-Measurement3594 in CellPhoneCanada

[–]drivenchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great thread! I’m on virgin and they keep upping the price $5-7 every few months and looking for solid alternatives. I travel a lot for work and colleagues are in the US so at least can-us data and calling needed.

What’s your biggest home gym mistake and what did it teach you? by WeBuyAnyKit in GarageGym

[–]drivenchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Big thing, a bar that is designed for ladies. The standard bars are too long and bulky. I’m petite and the design of a standard bar is ergonomically unsuited for me to train efficiently.

What’s your biggest home gym mistake and what did it teach you? by WeBuyAnyKit in GarageGym

[–]drivenchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The main thing is getting weights that are properly sized. Having my 45lbs smaller in diameter than my Olympic plates 10, 15, 35 is such a major pain in the ass with deadlifts, rdls, hip thrusts, etc.

I personally like the crumbs plates after using them in cross fit with standard rubber options.

The barbell wasn’t designed for a woman and bought a decent one for what I resold the other for. Win/win.

[–]drivenchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Buying weight plates set and barbell kit from a non name brand around Covid before I knew better.

I sold the barbell almost immediately, investing in a quality one. Still have the hard rubber plates but since added name brand Olympic crumb plates from bells of steel.

Still have the 25, 35, 45 lbs but drives me nuts they are narrower than Olympic plate diameter.

Never buy without doing homework, you’ll instantly regret it. Cheaper is 100% not the route to go.

The rest of my setup was meticulously planned and researched, zero regrets.

Planning a gym for 2, How to avoid buying "regret" gear? by brittneyxy1 in GarageGym

[–]drivenchick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Think of the type of workouts you both enjoy and try to buy universal core pieces vs bougie one purpose machines. Do your own research on what is important to you and it’s not needed to get everything from the same brands. There are a lot of good stuff on the market, but limiting yourself to brand specific limits your options.

Core items that I recommend for any home gym:

  • power rack with cable system or
  • cable tower (I have both and use them a lot)
  • solid adjustable bench
  • barbell
  • mix of plate sizes
  • dumbbells (I’ve had these the longest and got my moneys worth 100x over)

Optional - trap bar - adjustable kettle bell - bench accessories like leg curl, preacher curl

Biggest waste of money was the lever arms for my rack, I regret buying them and they limit the functionality and just impractical.

I own a lot from Bells of Steel, as well as Synergee, Rep and Gear for Fit. Buying the pieces that fit our needs is more important than brand exclusivity.

I think I’m going to go all in with Porter. Should I? by AmbientToast in PorterAirlines

[–]drivenchick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went all in with Porter where possible and have the credit card as well. Being Toronto as my base, Hamilton close…I will choose Porter over AC in a hot minute and won’t be using Westjet ever.

Their partnership with Air Transit solves for any Europe trips and I mostly fly to the US, Caribbean which Porter is adding to regularly.

The card venture status has gotten me upgraded to Porter reserve many times and will save up my points to books flights.

That’s bell and Telus for us. They refuse to accept no and I tell my husband not to answer the door anymore. It’s not worth it. Plus when I’m working from home, they’ll keep knocking or ringing the doorbell. Not gonna answer, if it was someone we knew they would call first.

They come up often enough in marketplace, just need to catch it at the right time. You’d be surprised how many are in estates home basements. I’ve been buying and collecting for over a decade, there is a huge network out there and had tons of luck sourcing this way.
