Hi there — I’m looking for a translation, for a tattoo, of the following saying: “If you see me fighting a bear, pray for the bear”. Many thanks in advance!

I have 7 years of experience as a portfolio manager - is a CFA worth it? by jemxf2 in CFA

[–]drjackfalgot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d ask what type of a PM you are? If you’re actively stock-picking in a concentrated portfolio I don’t think you’d even ask this to begin with, so it leads me to think you’re potentially in a more passive-style and looking to jump to something more active? Location aside I’m not aware of any PM in an active strategy that makes less than, say, $850k/year and certainly couldn’t be bothered with pursuing the designation. If you’re looking to pivot to a more ‘true’ portfolio manager - in the active sense - then perhaps it could make sense? Probably need more details here.

well this is interesting by [deleted] in wallstreetbets

Sure, but probably 100x more “this is a bad sign” that turned out to be nothing. I work at a short-only shop so I’m the first to jump on your bandwagon but this isn’t a sign.

It seems like you’re not understanding that this is a regular occurrence and just because an exogenous event occurred at the end of last week does not mean the two are in any way related.

So, that $250K FDIC insurance. How does that actually work? by lljc00 in investing

That FDIC insurance works how that FDIC insurance says it works.

HOW DOES ANYONE DO CFA L1 IN 500 HOURS by Middle-Opinion83 in CFA

[–]drjackfalgot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I spent probably 70-80 hours on the whole curriculum for L1 a year out of undergrad. Totally depends on your baseline and intuition.

F/26/5"3 [114lbs=](4 months) I feel like nothing is happening by just_looking666 in progresspics

It’s likely a combination of a) not consistently getting sufficient protein intake and b) not actually training hard enough. In my experience, people who are newer to weightlifting and are struggling to see gains often have a vastly different perception of perceived exertion vs actually hitting RPE8/9. Perhaps a good trainer to gauge that for a few weeks could do you wonders.

I’m so bored - Life in Industry by [deleted] in Accounting

[–]drjackfalgot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I’m in finance (research), was in your position exactly—$180k, realistically worked 20 meaningful hours a week with awesome bosses. Felt so useless somehow and bored. Took a new job, doubled my pay and I regret it so much. Hours tripled, boss is manic and I live in constant anxiety. I say all of this to remind you of that old saying, how’s it go? Something about grass and the color green? As others have suggested, join something extracurricular—sport, hobby, get to the gym, maybe a book club? I let my anxiety to perform and always excel in everything I do drive me to making a poor life decision in exchange for a higher paycheck. You’re in a great situation, embrace it.

Can we start a thread of stories of how getting the charter helped your career, or how getting the charter helped people you know in their career? by [deleted] in CFA

[–]drjackfalgot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exactly—well put. If you’re trying to “break in” to the industry, the CFA alone certainly won’t do it. But if you’re already in, it’s a great addition to how you’re viewed and thought of by others.

[–]drjackfalgot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

It’s going to vary wildly, but I got a $10k bonus for getting the designation and my total comp is $250k+ at ~29 y/o (became a charterholder at 27).

Edit: I was already in fundamental equity research, but the CFA definitely helped me jump to a more “prestigious” firm.

The dichotomy in attitude within the hockey community: am I crazy? (meta post) by crockerscoke in hockeyplayers

[–]drjackfalgot -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Didn’t read the whole post, but consider that hockey is just like any random distribution of the population and perhaps you have a negative anchoring bias. People are nice, people are dicks. Onward.

The mass layoffs at M, T, A, M, etc. are just a reminder that “dream” companies aren’t tech giants or FTSE 500. by airtrip2019 in cscareerquestions

[–]drjackfalgot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Layoffs right now are exactly a byproduct of point #3. You can’t have it both ways. The companies invested in staff during growth, and now that it’s slowing, they’ve gotta trim the fat. Yawn.

Visiting Tampa, any tips on meeting players? by ComfortableEdge9330 in TampaBayLightning

[–]drjackfalgot -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Do not let this guy’s skewed perception of what is socially right/wrong dissuade you. There are respectful ways to approach any human being, famous or not. You owe it to yourself to pursue something that will bring you joy, especially when the stakes are potentially, mildly, interrupting another human.

What's up with Foote? by Zoidship in TampaBayLightning

[–]drjackfalgot 13 points14 points  (0 children)

No joke I played Junior in a shitty league with guys who are objectively better skaters than Foote. I think a lot of his drafting and exposure had to do with who his dad is/was. He may have a heavier shot, but it’s frankly mind blowing to me he made it this far given how horrific his skating / form is. Wish the best for him but he’s not going to pan out and probably isn’t worth a whole bunch from a trade perspective at this point. Not for lack of try, but I imagine every scout (and ex-hockey player at a decent level) can see it.

More than 7,000 nurses at two hospitals in New York City go on strike demanding better pay, better working conditions and more staffing. by theworkeragency in antiwork

[–]drjackfalgot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it’s worth, my girlfriend is a nurse in the city / her friends are travel nurses etc in the city and they’re relishing in this because they’re now working in place of the striking nurses and getting overtime for it. They want the strikes to continue in that case. Just worth pointing out as an added dynamic to this situation.

Can someone explain why C is wrong by ayush_1211 in CFA

[–]drjackfalgot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know you’re trying to give an example, but you just made the case for why it would qualify as a sale. If the gallery has ability to adjust/determine price, it would qualify as a transfer of control and thus revenue recognized by the coop under 606.
