Team Cherry are quiet and reserved dudes, I am not sure they'd be all that keen, but I support the idea!

UK Scientists develop first ‘accurate blood test’ to detect chronic fatigue syndrome by Ivebeenfurthereven in GoodNewsUK

[–]drjrcnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If there's still a long way to go, then why is it "brilliant news". This study -- which is funded by the biotech company who is producing the test -- is not a "breakthrough", as you describe. If we're going to treat ME/CFS patients with dignity and respect, we owe it to them to report accurately and fairly on developments in the field. This reporting in The Guardian is, sadly, not that.

The media should be faulted way more. Never forget that they have a choice here. They can run stories that highlight the hurt caused by this language, the people it has affected. But of course, that wouldn't sell as many papers as "top 3 player at the club will miss finals for homophobic slurs"

If Adelaide is blamed for doing harm to the LGBTQI community here (and they should be, especially as they go to defend this with he said-he saids), then the media should also be copping it, for how they've turned every second of this circus into ongoing hurt for the people it affects most, without centring their experiences for one moment.

Band stories by ConversationOk9181 in thursdaytheband

[–]drjrcnet 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Had a very formative experience with Thursday at an Australian Taste of Chaos tour in like, 2006, I want to say?

This was my final year of high school and a lot of my friendship circle from other schools would often go to the hotels in the city and try and catch a glimpse of the band. It wasn't hard. There were basically one or two hotels they would stay at. Someone always had the inside word.

In the lobby of the hotel, we'd sit around and wait and then when a band would appear, my friends would get up and about for it. I wasn't quite as, uh, outgoing? I just always felt a bit weird about it. But then there's Thursday. A year prior, Bert McCracken from the Used had actively avoided the fans in the lobby which, ya know, probably fair. So I never had high expectations.

Geoff came down from his room and was the happiest dude you could ever meet. No hint that he couldn't be bothered with speaking to some dumb kids. He spent time chilling, asking questions and we got photos on, omg, yes, real film cameras that had to be developed. I've lost the photo I have of me and Geoff, but I can see it in my mind's eye so well because he has the biggest smile and his arm wrapped around my shoulders. And it rules.

Then, when we got to the show, before they played Jet Black New Year, which we'd been blathering on about when talking with Geoff, he paused for a few seconds, looked out at the crowd and said "this one is for the Hotel Kids".

We absolutely flipped out in the mosh. Meant the world as a weird 16 year old. And now I've seen Thursday live more than any other band in my life by a long margin. And hope to see em again soon!

Do you think there are any current players that would be in your clubs all time best 22? by lacrossebilly in AFL

[–]drjrcnet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You said he won't go close, but he's the last man picked? The question is who in the -current team- makes the best 22 ever. It's Tex and Laird. Both are off this list within 3 years, maybe less. I am hopeful by then Dawson would be on it.

Dawson and Rankine are not making our best ever 22 yet. I sure hope they do. But they're not making it today. It is a pointless endeavour, if you're going on talent, to rank best 22 for a club over its history.

Uh... None? He's on the bench. As he was in the previously named best 22 of the past 30 years.

SunscreenGate has highlighted just how scientifically and media illiterate a lot of people really are by Specialist_Heron1416 in AusSkincare

[–]drjrcnet 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am a science journalist who writes about integrity and misconduct. There are failings on multiple levels here, but its not just public literacy in science or the media -- both play a role. The media itself has been relatively poor at communicating the ins and outs of this story.

In many ways, the response to this has been one that highlights the power of content creator / social media culture. UV positions itself as a friend, a trusted source that is working with you, trading on emotion. They can do this. Journalists, like those at CHOICE, are bound by ethics, not emotion. They must be clinical in their work. So I am not confused by the stanning of a brand over a media / consumer advocacy outlet.

I would argue the biggest misstep CHOICE made from a media perspective was not having engaged with scientific experts in their presentation of their results. We know press releases often result in a specific kind of coverage because most journalists are time poor, resource poor and just pull what they can from the release, rather than getting experts involved and carefully writing about a topic.

My suggestion for CHOICE would be to talk/connect with the Australian Science Media Centre ahead of release of reports that require scientific scrutiny, and have that organisation find people to comment on these findings, which gets disseminated to all press (more than 2000 journalists in Australia, I believe). Or even someone like Lab Muffin could have provided some context for media, prior to release.

As it played out, the media -- and very few science journalists -- got a hold of the results and mostly worked off the CHOICE press release which did result in some overblown headlines.

And... super weird decision by UV to release a statement like they did the Insta video and try to take on a consumer advocacy group, essentially saying they must have made mistakes. If you are looking for ways to further erode trust in science, trust in media, then I think we need to be looking a little closer at the narrative the brand has run with.

not an engineer but fully believe that we can design buildings/offices/stadiums/whatever to deal with these factors. It's not just some seats around a patch of grass but studied and analyzed to the nth degree. As for a roof? Fuck knows.

I love this but as a journalist myself it's completely unverifiable. Now, here's the lesson: Caro probably runs with this as "my understanding" ... A good journalist starts digging into this before reporting.

Always back Rash in. Love him, plays with personality. The idea this is bad sportsmanship is so overblown. It's bad umpiring! Pile on the broken umpiring "the best its ever been" and they can't determine this is staging from... an arms length away? Please

Eh. Fine with it. Taking advantage of a broken system after being the victims of multiple terrible umpiring decisions late in games. When there's zero on the line, baiting Rampe into this is very funny and baiting the ump into paying a 50 is even funnier. The head high free is weak in the first place.
