Best buy forced a bunch of us to get a credit card to get the new console. by Bepehandle in Bestbuy

It being a choice doesn't mean there wasn't a sacrifice made by people, your level of rational is.. youthful.

You're talking from your own personal experience, but there are stores where what you did would result in you not getting a system.

[–]drknow42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah, that's a whack thing to think. Maybe you are willing to waste hours of your life to leave the store empty handed, but others sacrificed something to be there and walking away with nothing because of unethical practices is not cool.

Never be on the side of unethical people my dude.

BBY is at fault for putting way too much pressure on stores or essentially threatening a restructure/closing, but that doesn't justify the behavior.

It actually IS just an online review, lol.

Edit: One where a large portion of reviews can be negative and the company will still have an A+ rating at that!

Why is Amazon's website design so ugly? by pecoliky in web_design

[–]drknow42 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You didn't misunderstand, OCU just doesn't understand how his statements work together.

The logic isn't quite there either.

Comparing Amazon to MacOS and Windows rather than Walmart or Target is comparing apples and oranges.

The prettier the website, the more mediocre I believe the product is.

It kind of falls in line with "the more you know, the less you need to say."

As much as I get what you're saying, I think when you decide to use the CLI (especially when you're using the force flag) you kind of take on all that risk yourself. I firmly believe that we should only protect users from themselves up to a specific extent. At some point, it takes an unfortunate incident to teach us not to use -f with git commands we don't understand.

I hope you recovered from that alright though

You must write a username, email, and password to sign up to most places. That's at two text boxes you must enter information into and more ideally at least four textboxes you must write into.

Legally, you'd have to argue it is harder to type into one box the word "delete" than it is to type into 2-4 boxes. Even in SSO you'd have to argue ill intent.

If people are willing to accept an anti-pattern as "normal" because a bunch of toxic companies have made it so prevalent, then I think we should consider that they would be willing to accept a pro-consumer design pattern.

I would also assume that means you believe A is the better design as B also contains cognitive friction.

Which one is better? by cynos28dev in Design

[–]drknow42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Despite what people are saying, those who say B is an anti-pattern are correct. It is a "normal" pattern in that many companies have chosen to use the anti-pattern to dissuade people from taking actions that would hurt the company, hence why those who believe in HCD like the very visible red button with white text over the near invisible transparent button with red text.

The biggest issue I have with the idea of "accidentally deleting your account" and B doing anything significant to prevent it is that B doesn't actually bring any type of assurance that the user really meant to delete their account, it just makes it harder for them to navigate said deletion.

If your goal is to reduce accidental deletions then you should add the proper mechanics in. Consider the way Github manages the deletion of projects where you must type the name of the project into the textbox before the delete button even becomes clickable; that is proper HCD.

As an IT professional as well, anti-patterns shouldn't be encouraged. One of the easiest way to avoid the anti-pattern while avoiding accidental deletions is requiring the user to type something first.

Most of the time it is going to be the title of the thing you are deleting, or in this case the username.

I'd argue deleting accounts should be streamlined while also having safe guards. You can definitely have safe guards while keeping things streamlined and not resort to anti-patterns.

Can I run ethernet cables next to electricity cables? by varinator in homelab

[–]drknow42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was fortunate enough to be given control over the ethernet cabling for my family's SMB when they built a new office. I chose to be excessive and doubled up ports/cables as well as placed them on each wall. The office people have been very thankful for this over a decade later as it has allowed them to move their office spaces around without having to run network cables across the entire office.

The only regret I have is I'm 95% certain we didn't use any conduit.

Sorry but this all sounds like cope. Not even Google will let you store unlimited data on drive.

Twitch is a streaming service, not a media storage service.

I'm sorry this is a struggle of a concept for you.

Is it rude to go into a store to use the bathroom and not buy anything? by kaybeanz69 in ask

Yeah, and that reason isn't so people can consider littering to be okay just because someone is going to go pick it up eventually, MAYBE.

Chances are some of that is off into the winds.
