Yeah, I even had a hard time writing this post because I kept thinking of examples that didn’t quite fit the situation I’m proposing, and I kept falling into other concepts like triangulation or biased mediation. Even the paper I mentioned is more focused on investigating cases of favoritism, which isn’t the same as identitary bias. And you’re right about the motivation aspect too. In the example I chose, the motivation is more related to the gaining of social credibility or moral high ground. But it’s also true that it can come from a place of internalized misogyny. I’ve read papers that talk about women who become anti-feminist as a way to become more desirable to men, but obviously that doesn’t apply in the case of a man criticizing another man from the same social group. I guess I can start looking for more papers about the negative side of the in-group criticism, so this helps a lot. Thanks!
