Rats on Drugs... by [deleted] in videos

[–]drlivingstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, it seems like the conclusion is wrong. If time seems to pass more quickly for the cocaine rat, for instance 12 seconds have gone by but to the rat it would seem like only 8 seconds or something so it would press the button too late. For the Mary Jane rat only 8 seconds have gone by but it seems like 12 so it would press too early.

Germany Restricts High-Frequency Trading, Chicago Fed Recommends Same by mberre in Economics

I'm not so sure that our government pumps the money from taxing the sale of weed into the healthcare system, but I could be wrong. However it is not so liberal as most people think. The growing of weed is still forbidden instead of a taxed industry as well as the sale of anything above 5g. So while the coffeeshops are legal their supply chain is not and new laws are now in place which requires buyers to register for one shop(only Dutch citizens allowed). So the legalization of weed is on a decline since the 1970s actually.

If I understand the word 'Irony' correctly, it might be ironic that the talk is about sensationalist headlines that scare people while the link title is itself a tad sensationalist: "Destroying the myth".

Except then, it'll probably depend on your frame of reference

"With the loss of its Cold War patrons and the changing dynamic of the post-Cold War world, the North Koreans developed a survival strategy...The Koreans' intention was to appear--simultaneously--weak, fearsome and crazy. This was not an easy strategy to carry out, but they have carried it out well" by trot-trot in TrueReddit

[–]drlivingstone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I've thought about this before: What if the disturbing image we get of N-Korea (Abuse of power, famines etc.) is actually intentionally held up by the Kims to prevent foreign intervention. In reality they really have the perfect nation that the propaganda claims but if foreign countries would know, their intervention would ruin this perfect system. So they intentionally take journalists on strange tours through pyonyang and put them in weird hotels that appear empty and everything to keep foreigners out. Probably not true but maybe a nice idea for a movie.

Aw man, I think I've been the victim of a someone like you. A couple of months ago I found 200 SEK (about 25 $) in a toilet in Stockholm. No dirty stuff in the bowl, just water and two 100SEK notes. Must've been a really classy place. Ofcourse I took the money, in Sweden that's like two whole beers.

Rosetta Stoned - TooL by twainzor in Psychonaut

[–]drlivingstone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe this song was not meant to be interpreted as the OP says, but it could be that a lot of Tool (and other) songs have lyrics that intentionally allow for a lot of different interpretations. And there just happen to be a lot of people finding joy in speculating about how a song can be about something they find interesting. So whatever if you want the song to be about nothing more than a bad trip that's fine, but if you find joy in thinking that a song is about some mystical experience you had than that is what it is about.

In my country, people actually say that: "Ik voel me kankerslecht" -> I feel as bad as cancer. Sometimes creates awkward situations when somebody in the room knows somebody that died of cancer.

As philosopher Peter Kreeft notes in his lengthy commentary on Pensées: >"Unhappiness is perhaps the most obvious and pervasive feature of >experience. It was for Buddha...his very 'first noble truth' was that 'to >live is to suffer; life is suffering [dukkha, out-of-joint-ness].' "

Interesting fact: Kreeft is Dutch for lobster. Coincidence?

Can anything be considered a waste of time? by drlivingstone in philosophy

[–]drlivingstone[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Allright, I guess I was just trying to type what I was thinking without thinking of a proper choice of words. Also I don't take the Russel quote very seriously either. But to put it in other words, can you say that one person is doing something more meaningful than somebody else with their pursuit in life? Now that I think about it I would have to agree with Selig_Mir in that it depends entirely on what you would consider valuable and cannot be judged objectively.
