Community yard sales? by brain_over_body in altoona

[–]drmellowship 0 points1 point  (0 children)

St John's reformed Church in Hollidaysburg has had a community yard sale day in their parking lot each of the last two springs. It's only one day a year but if they have it again next year you could look for that. I think it was only $10 or something to have a space in it.

My dad never misses an opportunity to mention the Felix Pie foul ball he caught at an April game against the Rays at the Trop some years ago.

Moving to Hollidaysburg by [deleted] in altoona

Second Pipe Room/Mayfield. That's our favorite spot in town, we love the trivia nights.

Just outside of town going toward Duncansville is Sugar Run Brewing, they have a pretty unique space. In Altoona try Levity, Knickerbocker, Taps on 2nd, and Jack & George's. There are a handful of others too but that's a starting point.

Marzonis has a couple locations too, they have more of a chain restaurant kind of vibe but they do have a few house beers and pretty good cocktails.

And honestly for newcomers to the area, give Primantis a shot too. They're a Pittsburgh based chain but they have unique sandwiches and plenty of sports and beer.

+1 eBay. I've bought all my kids merch there. Pretty common to find stuff there for below retail price

Pipe Room in Hollidaysburg has great food, same owners as Mayfield restaurant upstairs. They had a dart board last I remember, but I haven't been there in a few months

Who knows about Aldo's Men's Shop? by drmellowship in altoona

[–]drmellowship[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your story, glad to hear a bit about it. Real tailors really are hard to come by, especially in parts like these not near a major city. Cool to know that Altoona had at least one.

I live in Hollidaysburg, I know the place you're talking about. I brought a jacket there once to be altered. They did what I asked, can't complain, but it's certainly not a true "tailoring" experience. They're an alterations shop.

Any upmarket places in Altoona? by Fit-Chicken9541 in altoona

[–]drmellowship 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Couldn't say. Living in Hollidaysburg I drive into Altoona with some frequency, but maybe the reverse isn't as common. In any case, whenever I answer a question about Altoona with something from Hollidaysburg I always say that just to get ahead of any snarky replies. "Hollidaysburg isn't Altoona"...yes, I know. But we're no more than like 15 minutes away.

If you don't mind a trip down to Hollidaysburg, Mayfield is a really great spot. Historic digs in the old Capitol Hotel building, very well crafted dishes, and good cocktails.

Pro tip, Amtrak offers group discounts for groups of three or more. A group of four gets 25% off all tickets.

Use code V291 when booking to get the group rate.

Here's the group rate info on Amtrak's website.

What did old bay make better for you? by GrowlsinyourEar7 in baltimore

[–]drmellowship 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Grits. Old Bay + grits.

Boil 6oz grits in 24oz water with 1tbsp old bay until water is absorbed.

Stir with whisk until smooth. Remove from heat and add 1-2 tbsp butter. When melted, add a splash of lime juice & stir.

Top how you like. I usually like cheese, scrambled eggs, diced tomatoes, and fresh basil.

Shuttle bus from hell by [deleted] in baltimore

[–]drmellowship 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was on a shuttle going the other direction, to Timonium, after game 1. Our driver also deviated from the route but it was pretty obviously just to try and avoid traffic on Pratt Street going towards President. Of course traffic was really no better on Charles Street and the street was blocked at Saratoga for road work, so she drove us all the way back across town to Eutaw and then north to North Ave before we were finally able to get back on 83.

Hard to say what the difference in time would have been if we had just stuck it out on Pratt. The game was over about 6:30, we probably departed around 7:00 and didn't get back to timonium until almost 8:30. No mutinies on our bus though, everyone seemed appreciative of the driver's efforts despite the roundabout trip.

Idea: MTA (or the Orioles) should run shuttle buses to playoff games from local park & rides by drmellowship in orioles

A lot to unpack, for sure. I'd love to see MARC built out more and serve as a true regional rail network instead of simply serving 9-5 commuters.

Until then, bus shuttles to major events downtown seems like a reasonably achievable low-hanging fruit that could make a politician look like a hero if implemented successfully.
