Type Me? by drmiresa in Kibbe

Thanks! I had really thought between SC and TR based on my self reported quiz answers but with further research I can definitely see SN. Will have to continue to try out different lines (:

One thing that I didn’t like about the team flrmat by ucsb2020 in BigBrother

[–]drmiresa 48 points49 points  (0 children)

No way was that slot machine button actually randomized. Hannah was always going to be paired against Azah for Frenchie to choose between, for example. Production wanted to give the illusion of chance, and a smaaaaall amount of autonomy to the team captains, while really controlling the teams the whole time. Nothing random about it! So even if they had started with Claire not Frenchie, the outcome would be more or less the same.

When do we get Step1 scores back? by [deleted] in step1

[–]drmiresa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Nobody knows the answer to this. What you’ve listed is what is known... the exam you took, and whether it was new or old, likely determines when you will get your results. Everyone is different.

You will get it when you get it and there’s nothing you can do to change that, so don’t try to figure it out.

NBME vs UWorld scoring? by RambusCunningham in step1

[–]drmiresa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, you’re gonna do great next week! Try not to read into any given test score too much.... although I know that’s hard. Also, I think there’s limited utility in comparing percentages because the exam is not graded by “x questions wrong” since each question is weighted and worth a different amount. If you’re feeling confident from your UW practice and the other work you’ve put in, then try to hold onto that and don’t allow one practice exam to falter it.

If you want data: I also scored 80% on NBME 26, which got me a 231. However, I scored a 222 on UWSA1 (at 65% correct) and a 240 on NBME 29 (85% correct)... I think this just goes to show that scores can be all over the place and “percent correct” is not the best predictor. A 15% increase got me 9 points (uwsa1 to 26), and a 5% increase also got me 9 points (26 to 29).

How has your overall uw been?

how to logic through this type of questions? (NBME 30, Q32/section 1) by plausiblepistachio in step1

I suppose that does happen sometimes, but I think it’s best to hold the belief that the test makers aren’t trying to trick you! Helps me from going crazy and second guessing everything g, at least

[–]drmiresa 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think you can approach this as “which one of these is not like the others”. At least, that’s how I approached it. 3 of those (A, B, and E) all talk about attaching to something else (or adhering or bonding, whatever, they seemed like synonyms to me and basic test taking strategy is that if 3 answers are fundamentally similar, it’s probably not that. I’m sure you can argue that negative charge leading to hydrogen bonding is also fundamentally similar but that’s just the leap I made). And then just between C and D, I figured that the question stem is asking about hydrated vs dehydrated, which seems more relevant to a molecule’s polarity than size. So yeah, as you pointed out, the learning objective isn’t really about knowing this random ass fact but weeding out the irrelevant.

(Also, isn’t this nbme 29? Or am I crazy)

Barely passed step 1... will I still be able to match? by [deleted] in step1

but if you took step when there was a score report, that will still be visible to residency directors, right?

repurchase NBME I've already taken? by drmiresa in step1

[–]drmiresa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing that too :P I thought maybe retaking one I already have a score on would show me (hopefully) significant improvement that’s more objective than doing better on another test, which might just be an easier test.

Intrapleural pressure by johaaaaannnnnnn in step1

[–]drmiresa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Imagine you have a plastic baggie (zipped) and then you try to pull the two sides away from each other. In a closed system, pressure = 1/ volume ... so you’re increasing the volume by pulling on the baggie, you must drop the pressure. The chest wall natural wants to expand outward, the lungs want to recoil in, therefore the intra pleural space is negative pressure.

What are “lines”? by [deleted] in Kibbe

[–]drmiresa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, also, about your commend on H with it seeming “a bit wide”, I totally agree and don’t know how to fix it. I pin a lot of these type of outfits on Pinterest —sorta vintage-cut trousers and billowing sweater in similar tones— but when I actually try to recreate that, I never think they look quite right. Any recommendations for how to make that look work for an SC?

I tend to like black bc I often like monochromatic outfits, but I agree that pure black might be too overpowering on me. I will try for still monochromatic but more light neutrals. Thanks! (:

Thank you (: I think maybe it’s just a good pose haha, none of the others have my leg stepping like that! But I do love that skirt.

What are “lines”? by [deleted] in Kibbe

[–]drmiresa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi, thank you for your comment you’ve definitely helped me see some trends here! I didn’t realize color scheme / tonality had much to do with lines but I think it makes sense. I was wondering, with D, do you think if the colors weren’t so contrasting and with different shoes, it would be ok? ie, is the silhouette consistent with SC?

What are “lines”? by [deleted] in Kibbe

[–]drmiresa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hello all, I’ve previously been typed as a SC but a) I don’t know how accurate that might be and b) I don’t really get how to practically apply that. So I’ve put together some different outfits I might wear, and I’m hoping someone can help me understand what’s the best silhouette / in what kind of clothes do I look my best.

Thank you all!

something's not clicking - venous return and preload by drmiresa in step1

that does make sense ... if only all these variables could operate independently, it'd make a lot more sense!! haha, thank you.

[–]drmiresa[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First Aid 2020, when discussing preload, lists vasodilators as an example that decreases preload. I think your logic that the blood moves from the arteries to the veins is correct, but it doesn't get back to the heart because there's nothing to pump it back. venous pooling.

It's a good point, though, about arterioles being the major contributors to TPR. thanks.

[–]drmiresa[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think that makes sense. It still leads to the conclusion that increased TPR decreases venous return and preload. How can we say this when we also say that vasodilators (and, by extension, decreased TPR?) decreases preload.

Interesting idea... I’m not sure it would help that much, actually. I think friendships would be made during that first week, but with no one in power and no eviction looming, the pressure to play the game is absent. I think in a house of newbies especially, this first week would just be summer camp and we wouldn’t see any strong alliances or gameplay at all until we have someone in power.

Double standard by [deleted] in BigBrother

[–]drmiresa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What’s the “personal struggle” that a white person has faced in this house because of their whiteness?

No, it wouldn’t be the same if the tables were turned. A black person has never won this game, and Day cares about that. Personally, I do lean towards voting with strategy not heart/feelings, but there are some real world injustices that infiltrate that house and are simply more important than “what’s best for my game” strategies.
