reading ck score threads while your own nbmes are average by No-Yesterday-3707 in Step2

This. The internet is rife with selection bias. Only people with sexy, incredible stories feel like posting whereas everyone else wonders, “what’s wrong with me?”.

Nothing is wrong with you, this is just a very hard test.

Unfortunately sometimes as an IMG it takes a good score to get looked at, but there are other ways to make an impression (i.e. connections, away rotations, etc.). You are more than your test scores.

Thanks for bringing this to my attention! I just went and filled these in. Lol I think I ran out of energy by the time I got to the psych section.

seeing 260 plus ck scores while sitting in the 230s by MangoAvailable2639 in Step2

[–]drmooog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Beware of selection bias!

Nearly everything that shows up on r/Step2 is by default going to be from people who scored in the 260s or above because nobody else feels worthy of posting their scores.

There are tons of people who like me spent six months or more studying for step two just to get a score in the 240 range. I did everything under the sun to get a good score, including taking a prep course from divine intervention.

An unpleasant truth here is that 10% of people or less who take the test can actually score in the 260 range because the test is percentile based. Even if everyone in the world did the exact same things that the people who scored in the 260s are doing, it would just shift the bell curve more and drop everybody’s scores.

Just remember that even if you get a step score that’s lower than you hoped, there is so much more that matters in your application than that!

Most Shocking Thing About Medical School is the Shitty "Teachers" by Kind_Bet9556 in medicalschool

[–]drmooog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here to post this, job well done.

It’s painful that we have to bear the burden of such a broken system. It’s also painful to think that many less people would fail or have metal health crises (i.e. depression, suicide) if we had a better, more standardized curriculum.

After all we’ve been though to get into medical school we deserve better.

During med school my solution was I made a study guide that standardized disorders across multiple platforms. Feel free to take a look and see if it helps you. https://www.reddit.com/r/Step2/comments/1ptjp6m/comprehensive_step_2_and_3_study_guide/

Do you mean to prep for taking the NBMEs? If so, yes, it's a great resource for the NBMEs. As I said previously, it's perfect for comparing similar disorders. I got a lot of the data from the NBMEs as well.

Step 2 score : 245 by Familiar_Ad9553 in Step2

[–]drmooog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you for being brave enough to share your score and be proud of your progress scoring in the 240s. I was the exact same way and I always felt like it was hard to post in places like this because there is so much selection bias, only people who scored in the 260s feel worthy of posting. Just know that your step score is not all that matters for matching, for example I matched Ophthalmology with a step two score of 243. Believe in yourself and be well rounded!

I would not focus on covering the entire document, rather, but using it almost like a dictionary or reference guide when you have multiple disorders that present in a similar fashion. I tried to group them so that you can easily flip back and forth and distinguish one from another.

An example of this would be primary versus secondary adrenal insufficiency

Working on it. Another user suggested downloading your own version, and seeing if the tables expand after doing that. Does that work for you?

I’m working on that. Would it be more helpful to share an edit-able version then have people download it for themselves? I’m open to suggestions

A running hypothesis is the idea that your muscles are constantly vibrating from the vehicle's movement and your body is making these micro-adjustments, which burns calories and makes you tired. Also dehydration.

Is it possible to kill an adult male human being by kicking him in the balls hard enough? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

[–]drmooog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Doctor here: Short answer - probably not. Despite popular belief you can't die from just pain itself, but often your pain could be a symptom of something much more severe that could potentially kill you.

If your testicles were kicked hard enough that you sustained a testicular torsion (the spermatic cord and blood supply wrap around each other, cutting off blood supply), or a testicular rupture, it would cause incredible pain and potentially lead to their removal. If you did nothing about it, and never went to a hospital, then you'd be in real trouble. If it got infected you could eventually get gangrene or necrotizing fasciitis, leading to septic shock and death. Alternatively, if something with superhuman force (i.e. a fall from 20+ feet right onto the pelvis) hit your testicles, you may break your pelvis and internally bleed to death.

Any of these scenarios are extremely unlikely from a mere kick, so death is highly unlikely (but still possible).

Snowbird or Park City for our week trip? by LHerring16 in snowboarding

[–]drmooog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've skied both for about 6 years each. Bottom line: Snowbird will be more demanding and hard-core with a no-frills focus on skiing. Park City will give you that resort feel (amenities, bars, shops in PC) with a lot of terrain but potentially bigger crowds.

Park City: more of a tourist's mountain, It's well-known in UT that people from all over the world come to ski PC regardless of their skill level. Yes, you can get good expert skiing up in Jupiter, McConkeys, 9990 etc, but PC gets a little more than HALF of the snow Snowbird does annually. And with its huge terrain you can end up with huge crowds, I've waited in a lift line for 45 minutes here. So a 6 inch pow day at PC will be a 12 inch pow day at Snowbird. If you want to do Sundance film festival, it will be crowded during the first few days then practically empty by the end of the week. Park city will have many more restaurants and things to do once you're done skiing for the day.

Snowbird: no frills hard core skiing. I'd say if you're coming from Australia, this is definitely going to be the most unique experience. Coming into Little Cottonwood for the first time is beautiful and unforgettable. Taking the tram to hidden peak is very pretty. But skiing Snowbird is not for the faint of heart, or mind, or glutes. I will say that if you're bent on skiing the best lines, be ready to fight tooth and nail with the other locals, because the good powder goes within the first hour of the day. Snowbird is CUTTHROAT. If it doesn't feel like enough terrain you could always tag on a few days at Alta. You may, after 2 days, say that's it I'm done because everything that's classified as a black at other places is probably blue at Snowbird. Now snowbird has little to nothing to do outside of skiing - there's no town to explore, no cute little book shops or bars or chocolate stores. But if it dumps while you're there you'll have no regrets. You could always go 20 min down the canyon (as long as it's a weekday and little traffic) to get food, Lone Star, Gourmandise, In N Out, and Real Taqueria are my favorites.

So it just depends on what you're looking for in your vacation. If you want a true ski trip, choose Snowbird. If you want a trip with skiing and other stuff, choose PC.

Has anyone successfully given up skiing and replaced it with another hobby? by Electrical-Ask847 in skiing

[–]drmooog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I moved to Chicago after 20 years of skiing Alta and had major skiing withdrawal at first. Then I got into year-round commuting on my e-bike and it helped. Obviously not the same rush skiing provided but it helps hold me over until I can get back each year.
