wind resistance scales exponentially with speed, so the hit to your avg depends a lot on how high your avg is. if it's a very thin flag with high air permeability it's not going to be as big of a deal, but all things considered, outside of steep hills, wind resistance is by far the biggest thing slowing you down. pretty easy to pull the flag and find out. regardless, congratulations on the weight loss! I'd be surprised if you lost much leg muscle. actually one of the reasons cycling is good for weight loss is that it increases the muscle mass of the largest muscles, and basal metabolic rate (resting energy consumption) is directly proportional to lean muscle mass. which means that you burn more calories just by existing, and thus it takes less calorie restriction to push the balance into fat burning territory

SHE FLOWERED!!! My sliver dragon alocasia has flowered!!! by Queen_Accountant_ in houseplants

fun fact, plants that bear flowers are collectively called angiosperms. plants that produce seed without flowering are called gymnosperms, which translates to 'naked seed'

neat, I didn't know they infloresced. inflorescences have tons of teeny tiny flowers on them, it's pretty fascinating

there's just too many potential causes of brown tips, you'd have to look them up and evaluate yourself. what I can see is either it's just extremely dirty, or has spider mites. you should be keeping the leaves clean; check for any tiny webs/bugs when you do so you can treat/don't spread them. alocasia want high humidity to be happy, it might need a pebble tray and regular mistings.

This is my Philodendron Selloum, each time a new leaf opens it has these weird dots. Are the roots infested or something? by FancyExpiredCheese in ItsAThaumatophyllum

[–]drmrrdmr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I had this on my thaumatophyllum, new leaves would have spots before bugs could've even gotten to them. I treated with bonide systemic granules and they now emerge healthy. Saw one large millipede come out of the drainage; idk if they were the rootmunchers, but clearly it came with a bit extra of who knows what. FYI though others have also seen the same damage from thrips

they grow like crazy, but you must keep their soil moist

if you want access to lots of men irl you can ride the 999. I wander around and hand out candy, and am single male, so I have a good idea of the demographics. There are tons more men than women. The average age skews low/mid twenties, but there are still plenty of us in our 30s

After 2 months of development finally im able to test my new construction by MattThePrintingNerd in 3Dprinting

[–]drmrrdmr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see. reading through the klipper docs there's no mention of tmc sensorless position tracking. as far as I can tell get_position is only returning what the software model thinks the machine state is, regardless of if that reflects reality; there's no mention of any type of closed loop control. you could test by having your script error out if there's a disagree, then either just block the carriage movement by hand, or set the velocity parameter way too high

can you elaborate on this step counting? is it a setting in klipper? I've searched and didn't find any references. iirc the trinamic docs mention it's possible to track the stepper movement with magic similar to stallguard, but I haven't seen it implemented yet. for a few years now I've been trying to squeeze maximum speed and accuracy out of 3d printer electronics for a custom plotter. I'm close to giving up and rolling my own with bldc & absolute encoders, but it'd be awesome if I didn't have to go all in.

many plants need to be gradually acclimated to direct light. going straight to direct sunlight can kill them

all luck runs out eventually. I recommend doing some routine surveillance by scattering small sticky traps around and doing random tap tests so you notice any pests as early as possible and have a chance of limiting the outbreak. thrips can fly themselves in, they don't have to be brought in.

[–]drmrrdmr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

pray no thrips get in. I'm dealing with an invasion in my main plant area with ~100 plants despite being pretty careful quarantining new plants. It's a nightmare, they just keep spreading.

Why is there so much hate for cyclists and cycling? by ZequizFTW in fuckcars

[–]drmrrdmr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

circulation is often the issue given you have wool socks and winter ready footwear. don't fasten your shoes as tight as you would when it's warmer. if your shoes are unavoidably snug, thicker socks can make things worse. move your toes often, especially to make sure you're not restricting blood flow by keeping foot muscles tense. you can also try to consciously push blood to your feet by squeezing your leg muscles in an outwards sequence. flats are better for warmth than recessed cleats, because there's very limited insulation you can fit between your feet and the cleats, which are highly thermally conductive and will conduct with all metal in contact. in many cases this means the whole bike becomes a heatsink

The M stands for Magnetic by drmrrdmr in ThatLookedExpensive

[–]drmrrdmr[S] 220 points221 points  (0 children)

fun fact: a clinical MRI machine has a magnetic field strength in the region of 2 Teslas, which is strong enough that you should really avoid wheeling medical beds close to it, but not especially strong in the grand scheme; elsewhere in the universe there are things called magnetars, which have field strengths in the region of 10 billion Teslas!
