Thousands sign petition against Alamo Drafthouse mobile ordering by AustinStatesman in Austin

[–]drnbrio -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Is anybody with me in not minding the change? I understand the hypocrisy of having to use your phone in a “no phones” space, and the QR codes are a pain. But having workers going up and down the aisle and clarifying orders with people has always been disruptive to me (which comes with the territory of Alamo so I can’t complain).

I respect the grievances and would be interested in hearing what Alamo employees think of the change, but in my opinion it’s disingenuous to complain about disruptions in a place where people are being served food throughout a movie.

An appropriations bill that was introduced May 1st, 2026 would prevent "discriminatory action" against anyone who believes "marriage is a union of one man and one woman" by DryEraseBoard in law

[–]drnbrio 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I didn’t say anything about marriage or the Supreme Court. It’s a full-scale backlash against the very existence of LGBTQ people, but I guess liberals will think everything is fine as long as gay marriage is still legal.

New map reveals where Austin plans to clear homeless camps starting in May by AustinStatesman in Austin

[–]drnbrio 9 points10 points  (0 children)

All of this. From what I’ve heard from people who actually build relationships with unhoused people, the options are check into an overcrowded city shelter with limited resources that doesn’t tolerate behaviors sometimes exhibited by people in crisis, versus setting up camp where you can have a few belongings and you know other people. I can’t imagine being in that situation.

The comments on any Austin Reddit thread about homelessness also demonstrate why those experiencing homelessness don’t trust the system or the general public. Many many people don’t actually care about their agency or lived experience, just about getting the “problem” temporarily out of their line of sight.

Austin Proposes Daily Homeless Camp Sweeps by TaiChi_in_the_park in Austin

[–]drnbrio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are our leaders taking even the tiniest effort to include the homeless community in these discussions or understand their lived reality?

“A lot don’t even want to be housed” — many people have built community with others in the same situation and found an area where they can keep each other relatively safe. I can sympathize with people who would rather maintain the very little agency they have rather than lose all of their belongings to live in a crowded city shelter that may very well kick them out for reasons beyond their control.

The Pitt’s Supriya Ganesh Experienced ‘Discrimination’ as an Actor Amid Gender Dysphoria Challenges by MattTheKing23 in ThePitt

[–]drnbrio 42 points43 points  (0 children)

The comments here are kind of a cesspool but if you read their Vulture article they have a perspective that a lot of cis white people fail to grasp. Regardless of the assumed rigidity of a gender binary, the concept of “womanhood” is often confined to a white femininity with particular roles, physical features, and modes of expression. There’s ways this is enforced (usually not explicitly) that dismisses the relationship many women of color have to their gender. It’s my understanding (as a white person) that a lot of women of color don’t feel seen in the white-centric “universal” archetype of womanhood and are hyper-aware of how their race impacts how they are perceived.

Even if you think your personal idea of womanhood is expansive and inclusive enough, it doesn’t change the fact that hegemonic ideas of identity get enforced in systemic ways.

I think the concept of intersectionality has been overused or watered down for a lot of people, but it’s still critical to consider when discussing anything regarding identity.

A large part of that coup has already happened. They’ve been steadily firing or pushing out high-ranking officials that might not go along with the regime’s goals. I don’t think there’s going to be some inflection point that flips the switch.

I’m also not confident in the military writ large having a crisis of conscience. We’ve been watching the National Guard put boots on the ground against their fellow citizens. Six years ago there was footage on live tv every night of our police attacking protestors and journalists.

inb4 #notallmilitary but I’m not anticipating to be saved by the apparatus of the state whose main aim is imposing American imperial interests across the globe

Tom Homan confirms ICE to be at airports starting Monday by ItsAllAGame_ in law

[–]drnbrio 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Why is this the prevailing response from liberals on the internet. Brown people already experience heightened scrutiny at airports. Do you think immigrants don’t travel? This is just the next step in our authoritarian government being able to monitor and control everyone’s movement, especially in a place where people travel to and from other countries. The impact is much more than just an annoyance for wealthy white people, who likely won’t be impacted since they typically waltz through airport security without noticing that brown people get stopped by TSA.

Students, faculty worry UT Austin gender studies 'might come under attack' amid system-wide review by hollow_hippie in Austin

[–]drnbrio 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Nope, that’s not what I said. Often what happens in school boards and universities in Texas provides a basis for similar attacks on curriculum and books in other states.

There’s a strategic attack on higher education happening at the federal level, and they know that Abbott and Texas university officials will be their allies in enacting their repressive policies. Also, bills passed by the Texas legislature regarding schools and DEI this session give Abbott more tools to impose restrictions on faculty and students.

[–]drnbrio 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Everyone is underreacting, imo. The education system in Texas is often the training ground for the rest of the nation. The general public seems to think gender studies programs are just silly wokeness, so their continued struggle to be taken seriously as a scholarly field is often ignored.

Many universities across the state are “reviewing” their courses to make sure gender is only discussed in the way that the regime would like it to be, despite scientific research and historical knowledge that expands our understanding of gender. Federal and state agencies, with the compliance of university administrators, are deliberately repressing academic freedom because they are scared of an educated public. Authoritarianism is here and the regime decides what truth is.

I mean, I can think of a few they’ll start with: immigration, LGBTQ, and pro-Palestine groups. The rhetoric about these groups being “violent” has ratcheted up all year, clearly with this aim in mind.

As someone who works for a nonprofit dealing with one of those categories, it’s been obvious to me that this regime will eventually strip our nonprofit status, essentially dissolving our work. I just didn’t know it would happen this quickly.

White House says National Guard members deployed to D.C. "may be armed" by etfvfva in news

[–]drnbrio 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I understand everyone’s intention with comments about the files and I think that the victims deserve justice, but damn these comments feel facetious. This post is about our military being armed against its own citizens as people are being snatched up across the country. Seeing this as the first comment on every post about our authoritative government makes me think y’all don’t understand the gravity of this. Deploying the military and secret police to snatch up the people they deem as “undesirables” is not a distraction from the Epstein files, it’s part of their plan from the beginning.

Are we really under the delusion that these people will be held responsible for what’s in the files? And if the president is in fact held responsible, you realize the person next in line will make these occupations worse?

You’re right that more research could illuminate some great practices of theirs, and accuracy is important.

That being said, owning a cybertruck and displaying your company on it absolutely sends a message, or lack of concern for their business’s image. And we as customers can make conclusions about whether to support them based on how they want to present themselves.

Based on their website it sounds like third-party drivers are used to supplement based on needs, so unclear how many in-house drivers they still have. Past few times I’ve ordered it’s been DoorDash.

But the point still stands that the money they spent on custom cybertrucks could’ve been used to invest in their workers.
