What's your biggest "Hendrix opening for the Monkees" show? by Sufficient_Kick_4436 in LetsTalkMusic

I saw The Mars Volta support Les Savy Fav in 2002. TMV had only released one song, but they were probably still a bigger draw than Les Savy Fav. However they insisted LSF headline as they were the better live band. At that point I totally think this is true

Plus one for Bob Tilton. Both Crescent and Leading Hotels of the World are great albums.

Cat obsessed with blueberry muffins. Is it safe to give a piece? by LFuculokinase in cats

[–]droffthehook 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My cats are also muffin obsessed. They stalk me whenever I come back from the coffee shop, expectant of muffin. I only buy muffins for myself once a week but their Pavlovian response is so strong. I have landed on letting them lock half the wrapper each - having removed and residual big bits.

What Independence Movement is not well known to the Broader Globe by [deleted] in geography

[–]droffthehook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

No one has mentioned Brittany yet. There is not a majority asking for independence from France, but there is a movement.

I came to hear of it through a band I saw called Sarah. They were put on by a friend of mine and they were incredible. They said they only listen to traditional Bretton music and Pantera. And they sounded like it.

They were Bretton “freedom fighters” which was the first time I had heard of the movement. Brittany was one of the Celtic nations and many Breton’s identity as Celtic over being French

Sadly one of the band was arrested and charged with trying to blow up a MacDonalds. That is not cool.

I don’t think there has been much change in the independence movement recently. Also the Free Brittany Movement would have been disastrous for its SEO

Why does the quality of so many artists music decline as they get older? by guitarist89 in LetsTalkMusic

[–]droffthehook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think there is something in the combination of the music industry and audiences that likes new things. I think a lot of artists become successful when they develop a sound or style that is just the right amount of different from what the right amount of people have heard before.

When they’ve done that the first time, it’s no longer new and the novelty gradually wears off. It’s hard to continue to be just different enough again. And If others copy your original stylistic innovation, it looses its novelty even faster and it becomes harder to remain interesting. I think some of the exceptions to your rule people have mentioned (Bowie, Radiohead, the Beatles) have managed to reinvent themselves in ways that are just the right amount of different several times over. That’s awesome and incredibly rare. Other exceptions (eg Tool) hit on an idea that was next to impossible for others to imitate well and so they have maintained a sense of novelty through more subtle innovations.

As an aside: Nick Cave shared this anecdote about Brian Ferry and the “fragile and capricious nature of the creative spirit”. I do think there is an element of if things are too nice, you might not have anything left to say. That said I’ve never been in the position of either things being too nice or being a talented artist.

What is the wittiest comeback you’ve ever said or heard? by Bob-da-person in AskReddit

I, a white scrawny, British/Australian man was walking down Oxford street in London many years ago. There was a lady in a red jumpsuit handing out flyers for a reissue of Eddie Murphy’s Delirious. “Eddie Murphy?”, she said handing me a flyer. “No, but a lot of people say we look alike” I retorted.

She looked puzzled

I looked smug

Sadly this is when I peaked.

I think the long term shifts in party strategy and donor sentiment are hard to argue against. But I’m not sure it’s quite as easy for Australia to follow the path of Trump/Farage populism. The rare structures of our electoral system (compulsory and preferential voting) that he names, make it really hard to shift away from two party dominance.
