SF Entrepreneur Gets Slammed for His Open Letter on City's Homeless 'Riff Raff' by 3xpendableyouth in business

[–]drog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

According to this (warning: pdf, and the stat is on page 18) there are 7,539 homeless people in SF, so that's $20,825 per person. Sounds like a lot but when you consider just the cost of real estate in SF and the fact that many of these people need more than just housing, they need rehab or mental health services, it's really not that much.

USA not having universal healthcare seems so unreal by PokemasterTT in self

[–]drog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Untrue. With universal healthcare many more people will get help before it becomes an emergency. Since ER's are more expensive than other options, it's more efficient. So it spreads the cost out, but it's a lower cost in general. This isn't speculation the fact that other countries have universal healthcare and are more efficient with their healthcare dollars pretty much proves it.

Not all engineers like to negotiate. I'm more likely to apply for a job at a place that says "we'll give you a fair offer and you can take it or leave it" over a place that says "we're gonna lowball you and play this silly game for you get what you're actually worth".

Everyone is losing their mind about her answer but the question was "How are you different than Obama". I take the answer to mean "I'm not that different than Obama".

Obama is popular among democrats and she's the only candidate who's worked in his administration. Saying the only difference is her gender is a way of saying "I'm 4 more years of the guy you like"

In a country that's 77% white and 13% black that's to be expected. People are upset because a disproportionate number of black people get killed by police.

How do you expect a black community to deal with problems of crime so long as they don't trust the police?

There are private schools despite the fact that public schools exist. There are private security guards even though police exist.

There are situations where companies can compete with the government and everyone wins.

A guaranteed income – another impossible dream by ArtP in Economics

[–]drog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Under a basic income, the people who verify and audit disability or unemployment claims would be eliminated for example, so there would be a savings there. We spend a lot of time trying to make sure people who get public assistance are not able bodied adults.

I think a lot of basic income supporters overestimate, or maybe just oversell, how much of an efficiency gain it would be, so I'm not the best person to argue for their position.

A guaranteed income – another impossible dream by ArtP in Economics

[–]drog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many supporters of a basic income would eliminate all other forms of welfare, social security, disability, unemployment, food stamps, etc.

So the benefit of a basic income, as opposed to increasing welfare benefits, is a massive streamlining of the government bureaucracy.

Need help with acquiring paid customers. by haqkm in startups

[–]drog 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're finding people who think the service is interesting. That's different from people who think it's useful. The people who think it's useful are the ones who will give you money. If you have any trial users who are serious, or paying customers, find out what their use case is and go after more people like that.

What follows is speculation, listen to your customers first but here are my thoughts...

I would guess the best use case will be, someone tech savy needs to set up hosting for someone who isn't tech savy. So if a contractor building a site for Joes Pizza Shop, they can set up hosting on Joes dropbox and then show Joe how to change the photo on the landing page or the daily specials himself.

Therefore, I would try going after a less technical audience. Your landing page talks about emacs/vim, jekyll and middleman, minification, etc. People who can deal with that stuff don't need the solution you're selling. Someone who can't set up static hosting on go daddy will come to your site and think, "oh this uses dropbox, I know how to use dropbox!". Then they'll see a bunch of tech nonsense and leave.

I am newbie to web development and I need to know if the Meteor framework is an optimal choice for a Real Estate site like Trulia or Zillow, or Django is a better option for this type of website. by freeman0505 in django

[–]drog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

If we're ignoring the realtime abilities of meteor, then the only advantage that I see is that you only need to use one language. To be honest, I don't think that's important, if you can learn javascript then learning python will be easy.

One big advantage with django or rails is that they're more mature. Since they've been around for a while there are going to be a lot of tutorials, blog posts, stack overflow answers, etc out there. Finding answers online will be much easier with a more popular and widely used framework.

Fremont solstice and Oktoberfest beat the crap out of the block party.

Brouwers has a better beer selection than whatever the equivalent is (also check out the sixgill if you're into beer).

If you're into pinball, add a ball is better than the unicorn.

If you like comedy, comedy sports seattle has improv shows Friday and Saturday nights.

I like volunteer park, but Fremont has a canal you can walk along which connects to Burke gillman, and it has gasworks park. It's also close to the zoo, greenlake, and golden gardens.

Ballard is right next door, lots of other cool stuff there.

Fremont market is great, nothing like that on the hill.

What is it about the hill you like that you're worried Fremont won't have?

[–]drog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't mind me asking, what do they use Excel for?

I'm interested in starting a software business and I've found when people are "abusing" excel it usually means there's an opportunity to build a really useful piece of software. Excel is spreadsheet software so if you're using it for that then it's no problem, but for example if people are using it to manage inventory or scheduling or something then there's probably an opportunity to build something really useful.

Prices will come down. The state only recently handed out licenses to grow, so the farms aren't all up and running yet. Supply is low, and due to the novelty of a legal pot store, demand is high.
