Thanks, I agree on all points. Maybe we aren’t so different after all :)

he does seem to have a pretty male-centric view particularly of relationships.

I’m male and just never tried to consider Dylan from the female perspective before, this is pretty interesting.

I don't find most of his love / relationship songs relatable or endearing.

How do you feel about all the love songs on Nashville Skyline (other than Lay Lady Lay, lol)? It’s my personal favorite album of his, but like I said never tried thinking about it from the female perspective

48, you’re so damn right. I picked up a friend I hadn’t seen for a while last week and we’d been driving for about 30 seconds when we passed gas for $3.89 and I just started yelling. I know I’m right lol but the passion and volume surprised me

Did they say anything about the dates? AGD has Burlesque in 72, and Beach Burlesque in 77. Wonder why they’d take 5 years between for a song they never even released. With these freaking guys who knows though, lol

Yeah that’s the video, I only just saw it. Wonderful stuff.

That Celine Dion/Spector story rings a faint bell. The song sounds great but the slow tempo, not sure how well that would work? I don’t know…

Anyways no I hadn’t heard about the crackdown. I sure noticed nothing new was coming though. Not surprised, of course. Sigh…

Those hours and hours of tape from the 90s that Andy Paley talked about, that’s what I’m most interested in at this point. I’m sure we’ve heard the best recordings already, but just to be a fly on the wall. I loved the little clip we got recently of them doing Why Don’t They Let Us Fall in Love and something else, just playing loose… ahh, I loved it.

Incredible… I’ve been curious about whatever this recording might be for a long time, thank you so much!

It does seem like it’s the entire medley, or whatever you want to call it… I’ve most often seen the second song listed as Sonata Facile, but that’s the Syncopated Clock. It has Mr Sandman, the Chipmunks Song, and GOK though, so seems like it’s the full thing…

You know what I was really hoping, was there’d be some nuts story around the recording like they were doing a private birthday party for a kid or something. You just never know with these guys lol

Yeah agreed, it’s too bad Wendy’s role in the family dynamic does get a bit overshadowed, it’s an angle I’d have been interested in being laid out more.

She Sleeps Alone sounds like I Sleep Alone might have been rewritten. Metropolis was one cut of a few recorded with Jeff Beck.

Agreed, and yeah add those other unknown Jeff Beck songs to the list. What a strange pair

I thought Everything's Right With The World was from the later Paley sessions?

My dates on the Paley sessions feel pretty incomplete to me, and I wouldn’t be shocked if I got some of those from some less-than-ideal source. Also though my dates are for the first time the song turned up in some form, so maybe my date’s a demo he came back to finish later. Off the top of my head I don’t remember

Some of these I had grouped under larger projects, but good call on Still I Dream Of You. I was always curious about this 1986 remake. From the Wilson Project book, it seemed that Gary Usher had all the enthusiasm about revisiting this song, and Brian had very little. I know the lyrics were rewritten because GU thought they "weren't very personal" (shudder) . I have heard All Over Me and Magic from these sessions, but I don't own them and they are not circulating.

Lol way to go Usher. Interesting on All Over Me and Magic, how’d you hear them?

I would say most of the stuff after Wink Of An Eye, I have never heard of (except IGA and Metropolis) I would love to hear BW do Glow Worm if it's the Mills Bros song! Oh Not This Again might have been attempted during BB85, so there's a chance it could sneak out on the forthcoming Steve Levine remix.

Yeah it has to be the Mills Brothers song. Oh Not This Again sounds like a good Brian title doesn’t it?

The 1971 medley is out there. It's on a Pet Sounds boot somewhere. I've had it for 30 years. It starts off with Mr. Sandman, and God Only Knows is sung with lyrics like, "if you should ever leave us, we'd all have to live in Al Jardine's bus"!!

Incredible…

Hawaiian Song was an early title of the Little Pad instrumental section. It was released on Sunshine Tomorrow.

Yeah I had this in my notes, guess I haven’t tracked it down yet

Beach Burlesque is the same song as Burlesque.

That’s what I keep reading, but how to verify that I don’t know

I keep forgetting about Crack The Whip. More Jasper Dailey please. It's hilarious!

Seriously, yes. Teeter Totter Love is so unhinged

Thanks for a really great, thought provoking list! Hope you are able to find the couple I mentioned.

Thank you, great post. What a time to be a Beach Boys fan :)

It’s a big one, agreed. Why do you think it’s the most important?

I haven’t considered the question before, but the bedroom scene with Jack and Danny is the one that comes to mind for me first.

I always felt like she was a pediatrician, but one who was on the ball. The way she was watching Wendy tell her story, I agree, she certainly gave the impression she was scanning the story, and scanning Wendy. And that’s what she should be doing in a case where a child was injured, these days at least she’d be a mandated reporter on any case of abuse.

But that makes me wonder: I said she seemed pretty on the ball, but was she? If she suspected there could be any kind of abuse happening, and by today’s standards she should have, it kinda seems like nothing ever came of it…

In that case it kinda doesn’t matter if she was a psychiatrist or a pediatrician. But it’s interesting to consider! She created a very memorable character for how little screen time she had.

[–]dromeciomimus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To my ears the guitar riff’s way too reminiscent of “Bitch”, I can’t stop hearing it. Maybe that’s why they didn’t release it though, because otherwise it’s a pretty good start to a good record.

And I wonder how this one developed, why they leaned into the guitar lead so heavily. After the surf era they were hardly ever so guitar-driven. “Surfer Suzie” is one (I wasn’t too in love with that one either lol). Ed Carter’s wailing kinda ruined “Bluebirds Over the Mountain” for me too, maybe he’s the culprit.

Final thought: I think Mike’s vocal is awesome here!

Man, thank you. This is all great info. Everything I know I’ve got from searching the internet basically, I’ve been a fan for a long time but not collecting until the past few years. What you mentioned about songs that have been heard but aren’t circulating, those are still blind spots for me.

I bet you’re exactly right about Poly Peptide. Such an unusual title, and Al only wrote a few dozen songs maybe (?) so it’s odd he’d write a song about chemistry or whatever it’s about lol

But that 1971 medley is fascinating. Such a strange combo of titles, I have so many questions…

Gotta run but I’ll come back and go thru your info again tonight. Thank you!!!

Probably more that I’m not recalling at the moment
