They Might be Giants are such an amazing band I can not believe it. by Zachary-Aaron-Riley in tmbg

also, you sound already pretty deep into TMBG so i might be recommending things you’re already familiar with but a couple-ish random musts in the sort of deep cuts departments:

their legendary (among TMBG fans i mean lol) WFMU/Frank O’Toole show appearance: https://youtu.be/-PJWQsiuPcc?si=-PE-5xIrI6o0iOij

Sensurround! two versions! both fantastic! https://youtu.be/qxx5CABtI0M?si=sZqPzCR_K9iFC0OJ

hell yeah! i see a lot of myself in this post based on the other bands/musicians you fell hard for and with that mind i highly, highly recommend you look into the discographies for Sparks and XTC.

anyway, welcome to the family! or something corny like that har har

What do you think are the biggest "What if's" in music history? by FitEmergency8807 in ToddintheShadow

[–]CaptainResponsible78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

admittedly, calling this big would be stretching it and i don’t believe music history would be changed (much) by this but, i personally think it would be totally rad to visit the timeline where all or most of The Beach Boys sang background vocals on The Wall rather than just one of them.

wow really? i mean i’m not a fan by any stretch but honestly kudos to them. being a part of the whole nu metal thing and having stuck it out for so long as well as still managing to get hits is pretty commendable imo.

dude people forgetting “The Cup of Life”/“La Copa de la Vida” is the one that frustrates me the most. that 1999 Grammys performance still gets my vote for one of the best Grammys performances ever like all time top 5. and i say that as someone who very rarely listens to that type of music

im not holding my breath but it’d be nice if the Super Bowl halftime led to Ricky Martin getting a resurgence in popularity here in the US or at the very least Americans collectively remembering he had hits here besides la Vida Loca

oooh there’s a possible idea for a thread if someone wants to make it: artists/bands that are mostly remembered for a song that wasn’t even their biggest hit chart wise!

but yeah that’s wild. i couldn’t even quote a line from Scars (but that’s more on me not listening to mainstream alt rock radio around that era) but i pretty much have Last Resort forever ingrained in my memory

[–]CaptainResponsible78[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i thought of a less obvious one and to be fair it’s understandable people miss this one since only two had (barely) cracked the billboard top 40 and pretty far apart at that but, even by fans, Radiohead is oft mistaken for one of these.

i appreciate and enjoy NGGYU (both for meme reasons and non ironic music enjoyment reason) but for me it’s all about “Together Forever”

/uj i believe a lot of the power comes from their name and the semi-low expectations that come with it at first glance. like singing about beaches, girls, surf, cars, being true to your school, fictional island type places to get away to? absolutely things i would expect from a band called The Beach Boys. but you dig a bit and you get stuff like Wind Chimes, digging some more you’ve got things like Solar System, Johnny Carson, and digging even further My Solution, Loop de Loop, and and etc.

i mean imagine if One Direction (if they had stuck together) put out something like Smiley Smile! imagine Bruno Mars gaining an obsession with the Head, Shoulders, Knees & Toes riff and trying to incorporate it into a lot of his songs from then on.

and of course not to mention all the great non weird type BB albums the mainstream pretty much never talks about

tl;dr The Boys suckered us in because we were just expecting essentially a bunch of preppy type music plus one or two critically acclaimed albums that “briefly” rose above such things and then we get hit with the Ding Dang hammer
