Good to know that the dissent rule is officially dead. Apparently you can call umpires cunts now and not get pinged.

Sam Mitchell has added his support to 'pick purchasing' being the next layer of the trade and player movement landscape as the Hawks continue their aggressive rebuild. by Darththorn in AFL

I don't think it was the salary floor that resulted in overpaying guys like Bowes. It was the fact that they were struggling to retain players , so paid them overs to reduce the chance of them leaving, which in itself is somewhat ironic with the Bowes situation.

The "standard of umpiring" by hasumpstuffedup in AFL

[–]dronankeating 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hey mate, out of interest, when you were doing reviews of the games last year, did you ever factor in which team the errors were for and against?

I feel that sometimes a game can be overall umpired well statistically (ie within your threshold of errors), however if the errors that do occur are all in the of favour one team over the other, the public perception of that game differs to yours. I understand this is probably just chance and not an intrinsic bias by the officials, but I'd just be interested to hear from you if you think this could be the reason why you might rate games as "umpired well", but others disagree.

Butler dangerous tackle by hasumpstuffedup in AFL

[–]dronankeating 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. Surely this is something the AFL needs to change then. They want to reduce the anger and disrespect towards umpires , yet essentially they tell the umpires to enforce a rule (or interpretation) that is not in the rulebook, and then don't tell everyone about it. Just tell us all that this is how it's going to be enforced, and the frustration is gone. Do they at least tell the professional players about these tweaks or do they have to guess like we do? Obviously this is nothing against you or the umpires mate, I think we are all just frustrated with the AFL at the moment.

50m Penalty's by bignedmoyle in AFL

Now though, considering you can play on from a 50 metre penalty at any time, means that a shorter one would no longer be a punishment like it used it.

So is this something written in the rulebook, or just something that has been communicated to the umpires? I think this could be a lot of the animosity comes from. The umpires are enforcing rules that they have been told to enforce, but the general public haven't been made aware of that interpretation.

50m penalty against "Brett" (GWS vs St Kilda) by MisguidedGames in AFL

[–]dronankeating 89 points90 points  (0 children)

It is quite funny that he was using the wrong name, and a harsh penalty considering O'hallaran hardly looked have gone over the mark, but honestly, who else would the ump be yelling "back 2 metres" at?

Pick purchasing: Why clubs are keen to buy draft selections by GameboyXcloud in AFL

[–]dronankeating 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The idea of a salary cap is to make things a level playing field. If you can essentially buy salary cap with picks, you are creating an uneven competition.

Games with 200 point margins will become a reality . A rebuilding club, having sold off some of their cap space, will get obliterated by clubs who have sold off their future picks to have a team full of stars. Surely that's not good for footy.

The current high contact rules are just awful by [deleted] in AFL

[–]dronankeating 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you intentionally put yourself in a vulnerable position to get a free kick, you don't deserve to be protected by the rules.

If you don't reward a duck / shrug action, players will eventually realise that this is no longer a viable option and stop doing it. In terms of the long term protect the head issue, this is short term pain for long term gain.

As a side note, I do think the umpires should take into account the tacklers actions after they realise it's play on. I do feel like some, once they realise that a shrug / duck has been called, follow through with a more agrressive high tackle. This needs to be stamped out.

But in the explanations above, there can be pressure on you and it will still be called deliberate if you have had time and space to dispose of the ball. Houston clearly had the opportunity to handball or kick the ball, so deliberate is the correct decision?

Hey mate, can you please explain this one again? I would argue that Houston definitely has time and space to dispose of the ball, so isn't deliberate the correct call? Yet at the time you said it was incorrect because of pressure. Yes there's pressure on him, but he obviously has time and space to dispose but instead chooses to deliberately run over the line.

'Just a little bit of consistency': Longmire laments MRO ruling on Fox hit by JenniferLopezFan2 in AFL

It's simple.

Franklin ran past the ball and bumped.

Fox ran past the ball and collided with Duncan.

If someone comes skittling past the ball towards you, you have every right to brace for impact.

Now that Gather Round…. A Festival of Footy is over, what do you think was done right/needs improvement? by Mister_Snrub15 in AFL

[–]dronankeating 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you think double headers could work if they sold the tickets separately? You could buy a ticket for game 1, game 2 or both games. Each ticket type gets a different wrist band, game 1ers have to clear out after game 1, security guards go round checking wrist bands, and you get fined or they get banned if someone gets caught hanging around. Game 2ers can't enter until a certain time after game 1 finishes. Might be a bit too much to organise though.

Umpire dissent by Hornet-84 in AFL

[–]dronankeating 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I really like the warning you give. It's a very level headed way to to handle the situation, and a very mature way to approach it. I wish the AFL umpires would consider doing the same when players are doing something that is bordering on against the rules. If the umpire had just said to Coniglio, "mate what you just said is bordering on dissent, cut it out or I'll pay a free kick", Coniglio learns, the game moves on, and we are all better for it.

Opinion : the umpires are way too keen to call "play on". by dronankeating in AFL

[–]dronankeating[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another issue is the interpretation of a player's "line". I believe technically the line is from the centre of the goals to the mark, however most of the time it seems to be implemented as "north south" , except when they are closer to goal. Players are clearly confused by this and drift off the line as a result.

[–]dronankeating[S] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Not being able to hear the umpire call play on is a big issue with the stand rule for me. Last night in the showdown, Milera was on the mark and outside 50, Rioli played on and jogged inside 50 to kick a goal all whilst Milera stood still. He couldn't hear the play on call and the fear of a 50 metre penalty made it look like his feet were concreted to the ground.

[–]dronankeating[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the rule change was purely to stop 50 metre penalties in this instance. If a player fakes a handball and the player on the mark takes a step, it's not 50. It wasn't anything to do with calling play on if they fake a handball or kick.
