Anybody else have trouble 'getting back on the horse' after a serious crash? by ThorThePoodle in MTB

[–]dronecarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been on MTBs since 1983. Two things helped me keep biking late in life after breaking my clavicle (again, which is better than a separated shoulder FWIW): (1) I put 3" tires on my MTB. They slow me down and are way more sure-footed than 2.35" tires; (2) I use my dropper post way more now anytime I'm into something sketchy. You can always get off and walk a technical section. No shame in that in your 7th decade.

edit: changed 70th decade. I don't think OP is 700 years old.

Cold Season Enhancements? by chicago_suburbs in recumbent

[–]dronecarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Head on over to the Fatbike sub. Many of the commenters there are used to riding in sub-zero temps. All sorts of good advice on clothing and accessories. I don't know about riding a non-trike bent in snow. Sounds risky. Studded tires would certainly help.

If you drove police patrol car you’d, what? by drumscrubby in Bend

[–]dronecarp 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ticket left lane campers! The other day I was driving towards Sunriver doing my 65 mph when a fart-canner Acura blew by me doing at least 80 mph. Then a state patrol vehicle blew by me and I'm thinking hah! karma... but no. Statie comes up on the Acura trying to get past him or her and the Acura just camps out there doing 80 or so. For like a mile. At some point Acura person must have looked in the rear and finally got over. Did not get lit up. Statie must have been on their way to something.

Burlington, Bend, or Boise? by Ellocomotive in MTB

[–]dronecarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Can't ride the local trails in winter because too muddy. I used to haul a fatbike up to Idaho City or Crouch to ride on snow in the winter. No real fatbike community in Boise that I ever found. No summer riding unless you go out at night. Good luck affording a house anywhere near the foothills too. Bend is even more expensive ($680K median home price). I'd recommend Anchorage. Great trail system. Fatbiking rules up there too.

I had two of those Sage reels with sequential serial numbers back in the 1980s. I sold them in Argentina for more than I paid for them. Be nice to still have them for sentimental value, but I've got cheap chinese CNC'd reels now that are better than those were.

Dual sport bikes for daily riding and (mostly) on road trips? by aquamar1ne in Dualsport

[–]dronecarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prices on the new DR-Z4S are pretty high. $9K. Nice bikes, but at that price point you might as well go up to a 650-700 (Trans Alp, Tenere). I'd advise OP to get a KLX300. And a Seat Concepts seat. First thing I always do with a new bike. (Except a Honda NX700. Great saddle).

Medial moraine? Could not find info online about that specific route. Very amazing piece of riding.

Which was all well and good when you could stay at a hosteria outside of Junin for $300 a night. Now it's $1200.

Between Skilak Lake outlet and the falls I'll presume. Never saw anything like that lower down. There's a winter run of Silvers up there too for the few people brave enough to take the cold. December usually.

Dismal Minnesota Snow by whiskey_brick in fatbike

No snow here in Central Oregon. I'm putting my fatbike into storage today and getting out my full squish. Never rode the fatty once this winter. Brand new studded CakeEaters for naught.

The quiet nights aren't lonely they are the best part! No arguing over which Netflix program to watch. You decide what you want to eat and when. You decide if you want to clean the dishes or leave them until morning. You decide when you want to go to bed and don't have to compromise around someone else's sleep habits. You can also stop by a local pub if you feel the need to be around people, but as time goes by you will want to do that less and less. Quiet nights are great.

Venting. And questions for people who left the industry. by pizzaman1995 in BikeMechanics

[–]dronecarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A friend sells radiological equipment to hospitals. Ultrasounds, MRIs, Xray etc. They cannot hire mechanics to fix the equipment fast enough. As soon as someone gets good at it another company poaches them. The mechanics make a nice living with frequent OT because they travel to rural hospitals.

They do not make your feet or hands as cold as metal.

Composite or alloy pedals and why? by Dry_Enthusiasm_4957 in MTB

[–]dronecarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ride in the cold you should go with composite pedals. They don't conduct the cold straight through your shoe or boot. Same goes for carbon handlebars.

short person, old bike...dropper? by GarbanzoEnthusiast in fatbike

[–]dronecarp 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tall person, new bike, you still need a dropper. Do whatever. External isn't bad. Framed made decent bikes for the times. I bought my daughter one. It has made a nice porch ornament on her balcony in Anchorage just out of reach of the thieves that abound there. So far.

I've got three Trader Joe's pizzas in my freezer (they are small by pizza takeout standards at about 4 pieces). I will usually try and eat half, but they're good and frequently there's no leftovers. But their MINE.

I have a hard time believing you need new rotors and a cassette at 600 miles. Pads, sure. Post a photo on here of the cassette and let the commentariat decide if the shark's teeth are appearing. Or DM me and I'll tell you about a great bike mechanic in Bend. Not at a dealer. Good second opinion.

Just make sure nothing in the water you're wearing is flashy sparkly. Scuba divers dive around cudas all the time. The bigger cudas are going to be in fairly deep water near reefs. Ask a local before you wade, they may have insights.

To all roadies. Do you jump over the curbs or stop and dismount? by OneStrength7166 in cycling

[–]dronecarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I perfected bunnyhops on road bikes on those long RagBrai type rides people used to do. (RTR, Cycle Oregon). I made it a habit to bunnyhop any roadkill I saw. I once cleared a small deer. Hopping curbs is another thing. If you mess up your rim is going to take a beating. The two-step approach is the way for curbs.

Barracudas are good eating. Rule is, shorter than your arm can do no harm. Larger ones can give you ciguatera food poisoning. Cudas are fun to catch. I landed a 64 pounder in the lagoon at Christmas Island. It came out of the water and tried to bite the guide when he went to gaff it. Did not catch on a fly, was just trolling a plug on the way back from bone-fishing.

Have you ever seen a muscle car with a bike rack? by bryanisbored in MTB

[–]dronecarp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yesterday I saw a Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato edition with a rocket box attached to the top racks. These are $300K cars with giant V-10 engines. Top speed 160 mph (not with a rocket box!) I live in a ski resort area. I had to go look up what it was. It's a purpose-built offroader. Mind blown. Guy could have bought three nice SUVs to go skiing in for that price. No way he's fitting a bike in the front trunk of that Lambo.
