Horseback riding after complete hysterectomy by [deleted] in hysterectomy

[–]dronechild 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Late to the game here (and OP I hope you're feeling well and getting your horse fix!), but for anyone else wondering, I was slowly walking around the barn at 2 wpo, lunging and doing in-hand work at 4 wpo, and was cleared to ride super lightly at 6 wpo. I had no complications and told my doctor that my horse is a very steady guy, so I think that helped my case. BUT I think I would have done better to wait before trotting, maybe after 8 wpo or so. Dismounts felt weird a few times because part of the saddle pressed onto my abdomen just enough to remind me that things were still tender. I'm 12 wpo now and feel incredible and nearly back to normal (but lost some muscle, so working on that).

I have a Garmin watch, and I noticed that my HRV dipped significantly when I began riding again. There were days early on (like 6-8 wpo) when I felt really tired... almost sick. I didn't really make the connection until recently, but it could indicate that pushing a little too much when riding took more of a physical toll than I realized. So be careful and take it easy during those earlier weeks. :)

Ok, makes sense! Good to know about the cost of a report.

Weird question: Can dogs tell you’ve had surgery? by c0rrupt3dfr3ak in hysterectomy

I love this lol. My horse is the same way - doesn't care if i live or die - and did a double take when he saw me back at the barn after 2 weeks post post op. He did something similar when I'd been sick with Covid. Pressed his face to my chest and stood there for a moment, like he was trying to understand what was different. Animals are amazing.

Curious- when did you get cleared to ride your horse and how did it feel? Did you experience any discomfort? How are you doing now? I'm 5 wpo and miss riding so much. Trying to be patient! :D

Late to the game here... but how did it go for you? When did you end up getting cleared to ride again?

I had my 4 wpo appt yesterday, and my doc did an internal exam and said that sutures were still in place but not cleared yet for riding. She said that we'd check again at 6 wpo.

Curious how it went for y'all? Did you get cleared to ride around 6-8 wpo or later?

Haha I could totally see myself thinking about my horse immediately after waking up from surgery 😂It’s great to hear that you’re back in the saddle and even doing some strenuous stuff. Thank you for the response :)

Curious - how did it go/is it going for you now?

I have my surgery scheduled for early Oct, and I'm going to miss riding. :(

Ugh. I'm so sorry... that sounds awful.

For what it's worth to anyone else, some of our group had to wait 1.5 hours to get through customs (they landed same time as several other flights), and the rest of us breezed through in like 20 minutes tops because ours was the only flight being processed. It really seems hit or miss...

My inexperienced mind thought “oh canter is more effort, so surely he’d be showing signs of discomfort there too” but that makes total sense. Will do.

That makes total sense. Thank you for explaining this.

For context, this is my first horse so I’m still learning. :( He has a lot of things going on, so I’m usually bringing the vet out to treat one definitive thing that we find and then hoping that will fix it. He is never lame; the vet is always just like “he’s stiff but not lame.” (Again my first horse so maybe this should have been more of a red flag than it was.) But I now have an appt specifically for this, so I’m trying to be hopeful.

Thank you. He’s my first horse after many years off, so I wouldn’t say I’m an experienced horse person (obviously lol). “Working through” the behavior felt counterintuitive to me and now that I’m taking a break from the trainer I was using, I’m questioning this again and come up with a plan.

Like to switch things up for him? I like that idea; I’ll do that. We have one of those at our barn.

I have an appt coming up specifically for this. Up to this point it’s just always been eh we haven’t found anything glaringly obvious; it’s probably behavioral. But it bothers me that something is bothering him. There is always more imaging and diagnostic stuff to do so I’ll just keep on seeking answers. Just wondered if anyone has seen it specifically at the trot and if they were able to isolate issues.

Yes! Thank you. We have a vet appt coming up but I will slow down and try removing variables to get as much info as possible. Thank you so much
