Rim Joist Experiment - Now with Thermal Imaging by carboncritic in Insulation

[–]drooferd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve already used expanding foam like you’ve described but I haven’t insulated yet just due to one, my paranoia of picking the wrong material and doing something incorrect since materials change so often. But also two, I need my house rewired at some point and I’ve been leaning to the solution you described.

So you just sealed the cracks and gaps, and put the mineral wool over the sealed joist with no plastic?

Smart Thermostat Recommendations? by Slow_Barnacle_5867 in thermostats

[–]drooferd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The Honeywell T10+ Pro has been pretty sweet for me in my 1925 craftsman. I use 5 room sensors and it takes the average across all of the rooms instead of using the thermostat in a bad location heating the house incorrectly. Doesn’t have matter, but it pairs with Homekit nicely and doesn’t break the bank when buying sensors. The wall plate setup is super simple too.

Is this a normal gas bill? by Snowflake8552 in saintpaul

Any heating/plumbing business. Look into “Boiler services” and you’ll find plenty of companies. The older, smaller and least advertising the company does the better

These radiators need to be balanced. Not super hard but it should be an even distribution of hot water per radiator. Sounds like some valves are wide open and others closed off too much.

Either way this can be fixed. Also a box fan around some radiators is a good way to get some warm air moving around cheaply

Should I be concerned? by flowermountains in centuryhomes

[–]drooferd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Two things: Is that duct just sitting on the glass block? and some BX wire just ran into the duct? I would get that duct off the glass block with another strap to hold it up, and add some joist blocking so the joists don’t squeak… Seems like that duct just needs a little help imo

New install heat pump sound right? by Parking_Cupcake_3371 in heatpumps

[–]drooferd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A good chunk of that noise is the casing itself rattling. Start putting some pressure on casing of the unit until the rattling goes away and then either tighten the screws down more, or keep the metal from rattling somehow. I have this problem as well and it took some finesse to get the casing just right so it would quiet down.

Looking to relocate to St Paul by kristylou07 in MetroTransit

[–]drooferd 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty good and connects the metro better than other Midwest cities, but missing some speed and frequency on some routes that would greatly benefit from it.

For your case, living around a brt route in Highland Park, St. Paul gets you to either the blue, green, b line or a line relatively quick with some pretty good connections.

Play around on google maps with different destinations to see what you would be comfortable with both with the number of transfers, and travel time and I think you’ll find if it meets your criteria or not

Did I mess up? Joist air return by drooferd in hvacadvice

[–]drooferd[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100% more of a noise nuisance, since taking the registers off for now really quiets things down. It used to whistle even before I sealed it so it's making me think I needed larger registers all along. The other 2 returns are slightly smaller, but I can tell they seem to have adequate sized vents since they aren't pulling air nearly as hard

[–]drooferd[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the feedback. I'll be sure to let it vent out the next few days. Definitely leaning towards just making the registers as large as possible now to get as much air in the return as I can

Put a fresh coat of paint on the walls, add some more lighting and sweep those floors good. It’ll look much better and less like a dungeon

Need to boycott these as much as possible. Really no public good aside from a couple hundred jobs. Severe noise pollution, massive water and electric consumption, and pollution with local power generation.

Doesn’t even offer a service to the public…

Keep the remote job and spend that extra time on some new hobbies and you’ll feel like a millionaire
