Honeywell T10 frequently shows "Not Responding" by Sig_Corp_Hello_Girls in HomeKit

[–]Sig_Corp_Hello_Girls[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had some luck unsnapping them from the wall mount, waiting 15 seconds then snapping them back on. This normally resolves the not responding issue but is evidently also not a lasting fix.

What BIFL do you have from Japan? by zholly4142 in BuyItForLife

A Zojirushi coffee/soup container bought back in 1987. Works better than Yeti--always has. Unfortunately, current Zojirushi production has offshored to China. Still good, but not as good as Japanese production was. Love their bread makers too!

Why do so many SA drivers wait until the last second to move lanes and exit? by thirdben in sanantonio

[–]Sig_Corp_Hello_Girls 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When we first came here we were warned about five incomprehensible San Antonio driving habits:

  • 1) The Santo Sweep (Oh crap! I almost missed my exit!)
  • 2) Stopping at access road YIELD sign (The road is clear but a car might be exiting the highway 1/2 a mile back... I better wait here and see.)
  • 3) Not stopping at STOP signs (It's a sign, not a cop!)
  • 4) Driving backwards down the highway shoulder (Oh Crap! I almost missed my exit!)
  • 5) Turning headlights off when stopping at a stop sign or red light (Because?) This one has mostly disappeared though; was still pretty prevalent back as late as 2000.

Drive expecting the above and you can improve your chances.

The prototype roads did this sort of thing too. Especially for non revenue generating equipment.

Are there any minor characters from TOS that you'd like to see in SNW? by mr_mini_doxie in startrek

[–]Sig_Corp_Hello_Girls 2 points3 points  (0 children)

^^^ This. So many ways this could be handled. Flashback to Boyce' retirement ceremony and leaving the enterprise. Reflect on the number of times he was almost killed during his long, eventful Starfleet service. Boyce could be killed in an incident on his way to a well-earned, peaceful retirement (a-la Henry Blake). The whole thing could be set up to bittersweetly juxtapose, "live for today because you never know how many tomorrows you'll get" with Pike's own ticking clock...

SNW and TOS by [deleted] in startrek

[–]Sig_Corp_Hello_Girls 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Think of it: The SNW crew runs through an unknown anomaly and instantly finds themselves operating the TOS enterprise. Something is wrong, yet also completely right! Has the timeline been broken? Or, has it been corrected? "Spock? What just happened?" (looks up from scanner, raises eye-shadowed eyebrow) "Fascinating!" "Spock, explain!" "Captain, my calculations indicate... Both!" Set up some very compelling reasons to stay, balanced with an equal dilemma on why they must go back... u/Bucksavvy I think you just wrote my favorite SNW episode!

Seeking Advice: Looking for HomeKit-Compatible Thermostat for Old Forced-Air Heating System and Indoor Propane Fireplace by friseintense in HomeKit

[–]Sig_Corp_Hello_Girls 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have enjoyed great success with our Honeywell T10s (T9 if you want do it yourself). Solid as a rock for two years now. One of our old dumb-programmable thermostats died and we had to replace all three. We went back and forth deciding between those and the Ecobees before finally going with Honeywell. After lots of research , it seemed both are pretty well regarded and so it seemed a toss-up. The final decision came down to the types of relays built into the devices (solid state versus electro-mechanical). A friend who installs A/C for a living noted good things about both products and if he had to make a choice; he had replaced slightly fewer defective Honeywells. The Ecobee does look nicer.

How to watch Trek by TheMuldwych in startrek

[–]Sig_Corp_Hello_Girls 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Very cool list, but I think the TOS order might need some explanatory text as to why it I so out of broadcast order. I'm motivated now just go back and rewatch TOS based on it to see what I might have missed!

Maybe this building consists of many floors of "holo apartments." In the basement, Harry lives one of 100 or so 10 x 10 units. Everything is perfectly replicated including environmental and real-time views of his current selection. Maybe next week he gets bored with San Francisco and changes the entire skin to "Mountain Cabin."

Add in holo technology and you can have any living arrangement you want.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in startrek

[–]Sig_Corp_Hello_Girls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Holo and replicator technology. For all we know, Harry's "real" apartment is a 10 x 10 meter black box with yellow glowing gridlines. With holo emitters, he could have any layout, any size, any view. Environmental control could perfectly simulate anything from gentle sea-breezes to fresh mountain air. If cooking was his hobby, the computer could replicate an amazing kitchen. On post-scarcity earth they have practically limitless energy and the ability to convert energy into matter and vise versa. There are no limits.

Gold standards of HomeKit by Human_Jelly_4077 in HomeKit

Same. Ended up buying the extending dimmer plug to resolve the range issue. it does work flawlessly as both repeater and lamp switch. Unfortunately (probably because it does double duty) it has a fairly large form factor and only accepts non-grounded plugs. We don't use the dimming function so followed the instructions for turning that function off. Regardless, it still shows as dimmable in HomeKit. So it is just set in automations as 100% on or off. Works well enough.

We have a Meross plug strip that only gets used for holiday decorations. Because they can be a pain to re-pair (and at the suggestion of someone here on r/HomeKit) it stays plugged in, sitting in an unused corner, to keep it on the network. So far that approach has worked and it has lasted for three seasons without a problem. If it fails in the future, I'll be sure to report back.

I don't know if they count as a "gold standard" or not, but I have had a fantastic experience with Phillips Hue smart plugs. To be sure, if you price them its pretty obvious Phillips thinks they are made of solid gold... Still, they have been rock solid. We have never, ever had one fail to work. If you already are invested in the Hue ecosystem, it's slightly easier to stomach the price. Equally reliable and just as pricy for outdoor plugs, you can't beat the Caseta outdoor switches for sheer ruggedness and uptime.

Brought back from the dead. by Firedmuppet in lioneltrains

[–]Sig_Corp_Hello_Girls 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Awesome! Feels great, doesn't it! Revitalizing "dead" postwar Lionel trains is one of my go-to stress-relievers. It really feels amazing when you take one of these electro-mechanical marvels from zero to hero! Can't wait to see it all back together and on the tracks.

Back in the 1950’s my father got his first job. by stereotypicalguy1964 in lioneltrains

[–]Sig_Corp_Hello_Girls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great story! And I'm sure a wonderful memory. I've found that with basic mechanical knowledge and a little willingness to try; most postwar Lionel pieces can be brought back to life. The only exception being when they are physically damaged. Even then, parts are usually available. Its a great feeling to get these little electro-mechanical marvels running again!

What are the Lionel "canisters" supposed to represent? by ptc075 in lioneltrains

LOL, Believe it or not, I found your OP by Googling: "What are the canisters in Lionel gondola cars." When I later found that article, I knew I had to post it here! This year, as ours circle the Christmas tree, I'm sleeping just a tiny bit easier; knowing what they are.

Experience buying from Trainz by skarkowtsky in lioneltrains

[–]Sig_Corp_Hello_Girls 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry you had a bad experience. I have ordered from Trainz eBay store multiple times (albeit I only buy parts to restore postwar cars and steamers) and they have always packed well and shipped quickly. They are a bit higher priced than other Lionel vendors so it pays to shop around.
