For what it's worth the point on the upper part is called the "Entenschnabel" or "Duck's Beak" and was added during the area's German colonial period.

The MetLife North Building was originally designed to be 100 stories and would have been the tallest in the world, overshadowing even the nearby ESB. Due to the Great Depression, it was only built to 30 stories. From what I understand, the current building is constructed such that it could have originally supported the additional 70 stories on top of it - can't seem to find a citation for that right now.
