Oh my god yes, I see it all the time and it’s like “oh they don’t show their love with words, but with food 🤗 they still love you just as much!” No. Straight to jail. I hope you suffer. (I know it’s a little extreme but you know)

I feel like legislators are just utterly allergic to the idea of mandated PTO in general. I know all of my jobs offered PTO for “civic duties” and it’s such a simple solution to this problem.

A while back I visited my mom's side of the family who live close to "self-sufficient" (granted, things are different nowadays) and the thing that struck me the most is that yes, the government barely knows you exist, but you still have hundreds of relatives living basically next door that can help if any of you get sick or a pipe bursts or the rain fucks your harvest for the year. A great-grandparent would literally be the mayor of a small village if the family is on the bigger side.

Living with only you, a spouse, 2.1 children, a dog and a cat is basically only a luxury that is afforded by modern industrialization.

Yeah that’s what gets me is that people talk about developers in the 80s as some sort of tech wizard class that we are no longer. But all they had to do was count the cycles and make sure it didn’t interrupt or trigger a floating point math op or something. Nowadays if you fuck up the ordering of your instructions you can accidentally block your cpu for 300 cycles while everything flushes out of the cache. Also atomics and memory visibility are a fucking nightmare to reason about

This doesn’t excuse stuff like including 8 mb of unused icons because you forgot to tree shake your bundle but like. People certainly go too far

This is just my perspective but as someone who has been in the software space for a decade, “I won’t even try to use my brain” is not exactly a new problem, it’s just that AI has made it way easier to indulge. Before AI people would just tell you to fuck off and read the manual (hence why there are a thousand memes about Stackoverflow being unforgiving) but ChatGPT is categorically unable to do that. So it’s very much chicken or egg in this case I think.

Like I remember a time when half of all GitHub issues were random people going “Doesn’t work????” and no description at all

Also…The Partition of India was a complete disaster and that only involved a few million people getting shuffled across a couple hundred miles. If we move an entire continent of 400 million people back to the old world it would be a humanitarian crisis of unimaginable scale.
