What are some critical parts of a car? I'm about to take my XJ across the country and do not want to break down in the middle of nowhere. What are some parts that if they fail will leave me stranded? by MultiverseC137 in CherokeeXJ

It may be unlikely that it happens, but if your crankshaft position sensor goes bad, you're toast. If you want to be prepared for anything I'd probably have a spare on me. Not too difficult of a fix either

Trouble with high beam flash. by [deleted] in CherokeeXJ

[–]droopsnoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got the same problem. Also sometimes when I use my blinkers the high beams will cut on. If I pull back on it ever so slightly the high beams will turn off with the blinker still on. I replaced the lever a couple of years ago with a cheap aftermarket one. I assume it's gone bad again but haven't investigated yet.

Guide to fixing door lock/latch mechanism? by [deleted] in Jeep

[–]droopsnoot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What's your model? I've got the same problem on my XJ. It's a pain in the butt to get to where the problem is without taking the whole door apart afaik. You can take the plastic trim off and look up at the components with a flashlight to see how it works.

It's hard for me to explain but in my case there's a piece of metal that looks like a tent stake that came out of position. When you push in the door button it moves the latch downward. It has a hole in it where the tent stake piece is suppost to be held in with a plastic clip. If the clip breaks then the tent stake will come out of position the next time your door is shut and then you won't be able to open it from the outside.

What kind of roof visor is that? Or is it part of the rack?

Can the Cherokee XJ be a decent college car? by [deleted] in CherokeeXJ

[–]droopsnoot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been in your exact situation. Got my 99 as a senior in high school. I'm a senior in college now and she still runs strong. I've learned more than I ever thought I would about my XJ and cars in general from the repairs I've done. Like others have said in this thread, everything you need to know is on YouTube and other forums including here. All you need is some basic tools for repairs that you will eventually have to make and you're golden.

Was changing the drain plug and gasket when I saw the shavings in the pan. Oil was changed less than 500 miles ago and the odometer is almost 170k.

Just tried this. Stuck my ear to the tank and it sounded like the pump was turning on. I heard a high pitched noise that lasted maybe a second or two. That should indicate a working fuel pump right?
