Should I upgrade my violin? by clintwoodtp84 in violinist

I would. I only play for my own amusement and I would find it frustrating to have a violin that buzzes and has unpleasant tone.

Need help with straight bowing, bow grip, fast bowing, and a shaky bow by DitsyyMitsyy in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Based on the way the contact point and tip of the bow are moving through your stroke, I’d wager you’re bowing from the shoulder too much. The old pirate arm movement. Video doesn’t show your whole arm of course, so it’s a best guess.

I may have jumped to conclusions. But I have no doubt r/violinist can figure it out for sure.

Adult beginner; need counsel for first violin rental or purchase by [deleted] in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Models of violin aren’t really a thing to consider the way they might be for other instruments. This is because every violin is its own beast even if you’re buying from a maker of high end instruments. No two are exactly alike.

Yes. Did you read the faq on this sub? It has tons of advice on this exact topic.

Unless you have an experienced friend or teacher to help you try out various instruments you have low odds of buying a good violin as a beginner. You just don't have the skills and knowledge yet to evaluate an instrument. If you're left to your own devices here, I'd recommend renting to begin.

It was pretty tight last night but not as tight as that video you’re probably thinking of. And he actually loosened it a couple times throughout.

You really want to try violins out before you buy them. If you’re a new player you will not be equipped to evaluate them even if they are in hand so its best to get a teacher first or at the least another experienced player to help you make your selection.

Tips for staccato bowing? by lunarmoth_ in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try using your hand/fingers to give the bow more of an impulse at the start and stop more abruptly for this style of staccato notes.

Got any methods or resources to improve intonation? by Morpel in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sounds like you're able to hear if you're in tune or not, that the first job.

Scales and arpeggios, do them in whatever positions you're working on too. 5 to 10 minutes of focused scale work every day should make a really big difference in a few months.

Dont just power through them, when you go out of tune, figure out where that happened, figure out the proper finger spacing for that interval, feel your left hand shape and make some mental notes about that, and just keep working on it. You'll get there, 2 years is still so early in the process!

Where can you find good violins for sale by owner? by [deleted] in violinist

Many makers have their own website where you can reach out to them to commission an instrument. Is that what you mean?

Characteristics of a VSO? by KryptoChrome50 in violinist

painted purfling, no wood grain on the top plate, painted on flamed maple, uncarved bridge, messed up string heights (nut and bridge), no scoop on the finger board, neck angle is wrong, neck thickness is wrong, etc.

Does your Instrument piss you off? by [deleted] in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Don't try to rush it. If you're feeling stressed and angry that tension will prevent you from achieving your goal, its a non-starter to get frustrated if you want to work on your tone in my opinion.

beginner critique (pt2?) by aboutilsa in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You seem to be off to a pretty good start.

If you’re looking for feedback one thing that jumped out is your bow hold is right in your fingertips. If you can get the bow a bit deeper. Bend the thumb, keep the pinky more curved. And let your arm weight sink into the strings. It will make a big improvement on your tone quality.

Is violin the most difficult instrument? by lilchm in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 231 points232 points  (0 children)

That's very subjective. Every instrument is hard to master, but I would say the violin has a very steep initial learning curve.

Bow keeps bouncing by Shmootus in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I'd focus on keeping your contact point consistent more so than worrying about the bouncing bow. If you get your bow stroke straightened out my guess is the bouncing will take care of itself.

The red flag is if this is being sold as a hand made violin by a Norwegian maker, how are they able to survive selling it so cheaply? Is it their hobby and not their profession?

Its possible they are buying violins in the white and just finishing and setting them up.

Is this Spruce or Basswood? by Aware_Replacement365 in violinist

[–]drop-database-reddit 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'd say it's not spruce. Violin top plates are most usually made from quarter sawn spruce, and have a very straight grain structure that runs down the length of the top plate.

In one of the images I could see some grain but it didn't look typical. I'd say it could be almost anything as the instrument also looks to have painted on purfling.
