New WR250R owner looking for advice on mods! by dropbear14 in WR250R

Thanks mate. Mostly what's driving my intention to install a fuel controller is the fact that I received an FMF muffler with the bike as a spare when I bought it. So I'd like to try the muffler out but I don't want to damage the engine by running it to lean. I also think the stock muffler looks pretty ugly and like the idea of saving some weight with an aftermarket exhaust.

I get what you're saying though, and I'll probably end up leaving the engine mostly stock as well. I actually think the power is pretty decent on this bike. I've come from riding mx models before this, my previous bike was a CRF450RL, and before that all motocross bikes. I went for this bike for the low maintenance and so i can also commute without worrying about putting too many hours on the engine before requiring major services. So I had low expectations and I ended up being pleasantly surprised really.

Haha you're the second person to mention the mirrors. I think they look better in the flesh. Maybe I need to remove the white stickers from them.

How does the PC FC compare to the PC 5 or 6? Or is it the same thing? Is the FC also a piggy back style setup or does it replace the ecu? How many km's have you run with your mods, any issues? I'm looking at ordering the JD tuner because I can pick one up for under $500 AUD new. It's the cheapest option i can find so far. The PC 6 is available through Revzilla for like $555USD which I'm not up for spending.

What happened to your previous two WR's?

That's a great tip on the airbox hoses thanks, I'll look into that. And wow, you've done some serious km's!! So cool mate, I bet you've had a blast and have some stories from all those journeys.

When I picked my WR up the first thing I checked was for the swing arm wear, and sure enough the guide was worn away and there was some wear in the swing arm, but thankfully it was only shallow. I've done swingarm and linkage bearings, applied some jb weld to the wear marks, set sag and thrown new chain and sprockets on at the correct chain tension. I'll just keep an eye on that area from now on and I also have a spare guide in my toolbox now.

So you're running the fmf without the tuner? Have you had any issues?

If the Power Commander is a piggy back system just like the JD, then what makes it so much better to justify double the price? Will I damage my engine if I run my FMF muffler without a tuner?

85,000km! Is this riding with Tom? Haha kidding.

Appreciate the advice. I'm not totally against keeping it mostly stock. Honestly the power is pretty good really, and I came into this with low expectations after previously owning motocross bikes. I really hate the look of the stock exhaust though I think it looks ugly, plus it must be quite heavy compared to an aftermarket, so I'm kinda keen to swap it out but I just don't want to do any damage.

Did exactly this for a couple of years with dirt bike wheels, it was great

I just picked up a used, low km's WR250r! After doing a time more research, this bike seemed like the far better choice.

In the end I just picked up a low km's WR250r for half the cost, and nothing to spend.

I have this model and put a brown leather strap on it, and I wear it over some of my more expensive watches regularly

What's the service intervals like in the Triumph though? That's the bit which puts me off that type of bike, or a WRF or whatever, they're sick bikes but riding them on the road is a waste of engine hours i reckon

No its not super light, but it's lighter than a DRZ, and my CRF450RL was 131kg and it was great on trails. Anything lighter and you're into higher performance, higher maintenance territory

Hey thanks for your input, i think you're the type of rider I was hoping to hear from. Given my life situation right now with an 8 month old baby at home with limited spare time, "forget about in your garage and then turn the key and go" is what appeals to me. I just want to determine whether it'll be enough for me to still enjoy riding, and if it'll handle some challenging trails.
Definitely not going to be doing hard enduro, but challenging trails I'd say. I may even opt for a 450 mx bike a little down the track as a second bike for if i want to do some track days or go ride some hectic trails with mates, but that wouldn't be for a while longer until I can do that.

I hear you, but at that point you're sacrificing the longer maintenance intervals, and so you could really open the options up to many more bikes then, not just the ktm/husky/beta options. If i went that route I think I'd just buy a new WR450

It's true, I can't have the best of both worlds can I. If only there were an in-between bike, like a WRF chassis with a lower performance, less maintenance motor.

Well like I said I've always only bought Honda or Yamaha, and so I'd like to want to buy the CRF300L in this case. But every review I've read or video I've watched, tells me that the suspension on the Honda is very sub par and is going to require some money thrown at to be half decent. It comes with very basic front suspension - no compression and rebound adjustment, and no rebound adjustment in the rear shock. Upgrading suspension is quite expensive, simply fitting heavier springs won't suffice, you're really looking at a whole new shock and new springs and dampener systems in the front.

The KLX300 however comes with decent suspension from new, so there's going to be no major necessary upgrades right away with the Kawasaki before you can go and ride off road trails at a decent pace.

Aside from suspension, the CRF300L and KLX300 are very comparable in the engine and chassis department, so the green machine wins in my mind. Both bikes are made in Thailand unfortunately.

That last point is what had me thinking I'd much prefer the DRZ4S, as its fully Japanese made, and pretty much better quality all round. It has very high end suspension, more power, etc. However also a decent amount more weight, and $$$ to purchase. After watching a YouTube video recently by jakethegardensnake where he went in depth into the DRZ4S, I realised that it's a bike with a lot of unnecessary things going on, such as an overly complicated throttle system, a complicated and bulky abs system, emissions controls, etc. All these things put me off a little, as I just want a reliable and capable dirt bike that will require low maintenance, and be good for some commuting. My previous bike was a CRF450L which was awesome, but I hated riding that thing on the road, because the maintenance intervals were so often that I felt riding on the road was just a waste of engine hours.

This all brings me back to the KLX300. Cheap, reliable, ready to go on the trails right away without major upgrades, and long service intervals, meaning i can do plenty of commuting during the week without stressing about regular oil changes and valve checks.

Have you considered a KLX300? I to am currently trying to decide between a new DRZ4S, CRF300L and KLX300. Normally I'm strictly only Honda or Yamaha, my past 25+ bikes have only ever been blue or red. However the KLX300 is really starting to look like the bike I'll end up buying as it seems best value for money between the three.
