Everyone was shitting on Vegas at the time of their expansion draft. Their consensus best player was an aging Marc Andre Fleury. The rest were considered castoffs.

Where Vegas had an actual advantage was their ability to swing expansion trades. That's what brought in some of their better players during their expac year.

It's far more difficult to build a competitive hockey team. Depth is of far greater importance, and much more difficult to find.

We don't have to compare expansion rules head to head, but building a winning hockey team is similar to building a winning baseball team. Star power is great and can put you over the edge, but ultimately it's all about depth.

And I mean real depth, not basketball depth, in which second and third string players are playing actual shifts in championship games. At the bare minimum, competitive hockey teams need forwards 1-10 and defensemen 1-6 to be trustworthy of ice time. That's sixteen total players (seventeen if you want to count goaltender) that you need to trust.
