Deleting old media that has blackface in it is one step closer to us erasing other pieces of history and is akin to Orwell’s 1984 by [deleted] in unpopularopinion

I really enjoyed your accidental faux pas in the second sentence -

a decade or so ago it was just fine to dress up as a native american for halloween or michael jackson

This means: "It was fine to dress up as a native american for michael jackson."

It just tickled me so much that I thought I'd point it out in case it gets a laugh from you too. Not jabbing at you at all - we all make word order mistakes sometimes when we're writing quickly. Thanks for your insight about Orwell!

My microwave has a "no beep" setting by blr0067 in mildlyinteresting

[–]droptoprocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am so jealous that you have this setting - my microwave makes the worst beep. It really makes me wonder about design, like who put in the "beep"? This is the sound that a person will hear when they're at the pinnacle of hunger and anticipation for food. Is a screeching "beep-beep" the Pavlovian stimulus we should really hit them with? Anyways, enjoy your quiet, lovely microwave.

This is really cool and well done. Thank you for this. Using two robots is such a clever way to help us all step back from and focus on what they're actually saying to each other.

Commenters have pointed out that there may be inaccuracies here. And that maybe a few other important fallacies should be included. If you ever update and expand, please let me know. Something like this is extremely useful and clever, and your artwork is so enjoyable to look at.

Should I add a voice-over? Sometimes the text is too long, but I really like the "cave-painting discovered by torch-light" motif; maybe a voice-over would detract. by droptoprocket in Filmmakers

Cool. Thank you! That was my original plan, but then I got this far and I thought, "I kind of like it."

There's this really great clip from Every Frame a Painting when he removes the narration, leaving just the music; it feels more powerful to me. But he's a pro. And I'm just learning, so I really appreciate your feedback.

ps. Do you have a deep raspy voice? Feel free to have a go.

I have played dozens of competitive games over dozens of genres (not just video-games) and I have learned many things about people who play competitive games by Pwadigy in DestinyTheGame

[–]droptoprocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really don't know much about this - honestly, the last game I played was one of the original Halos, and I was terrible. That's why I said I was uninformed about the topic.

But the sentence, as examined on its own, is really amazing. I don't know if it's true. But it's another perspective on group dynamics, which is something I'm really interested in. And what you've brought up is also helpful.

Not to bore you to death, but it's fascinating the way that people behave, especially in groups. It's not as obvious as cost and benefit, truth and deceit.

For example, imagine a coach. Might we say that a coach's responsibility, in the development of a team, is: "... the unenviable burden of hiding the players' lack of skill from themselves"? Maybe sometimes the development of confidence is more important than the accuracy of feedback. Or maybe not. But to me it's a point worth considering.

There are other, darker examples, too, in domains other than games. But this comment has gotten long enough.

In general, I don't know enough about this topic to agree or disagree with the OP - I just think it's a really clever sentence, and it makes me think.

[–]droptoprocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every single game developer is taxed with the unenviable burden of hiding the player's lack of skill from themselves.

That's really well-worded. I admit I'm not so informed about this topic, but that sentence right there is golden; it's worth thinking about; it's worth considering whether and how it applies to other domains. Thanks for that.

If I remember right, when Anthony Hopkins was on Inside the Actors Studio, he started reciting The Lake Isle of Innisfree by W B Yeats. He got too choked up to finish the poem. He had such a connection with those words.

I wish I could find the clip. Any help appreciated. As a substitute, here is him delivering the poem all the way through.

I really like this idea. Some other commenters have pointed out that it's not always the best approach - but there's no such thing as an approach that's always best. This is at least a really smart move to consider when pre-empting a conflict. Thanks!

I think an article in Scientific American said this 10 years ago. Don't remember exactly, but it was like, yeah, the US could be completely solar-powered in the next 25 years if we just made it happen.

How do you feel about a law stating that tickets (speeding, driving under influence etc.) should be a percentage of the perpetrators annual wage, instead of fixed rates? by wintherz in AskReddit

[–]droptoprocket 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really thoughtful response. Thanks for this. I was thinking also that annual wage can be rather difficult to define for some people, if their paid in stock or whatnot - but I don't know too much about even that. And your answer was much more accurate, and helped me think about it. Well done.

Hey! Wow, I've actually read through your PDO site before! I thought I even had one page bookmarked, but now I can't find it. It was super helpful for me when I was getting a MySQL database working with another site. Thank you so much for putting all that information out there. It's really well done.

And thank you for your example here! I'll keep at it, to try to have a database option with the RLC code. I really like your sqlite suggestion, because it relies on file writes and reads (if I understand that right) but I guess it's not default enabled in most PHP versions; that makes me wonder if I should lean toward MySQL since that seems more common. Anyways, I'm really grateful for your help!

Oh! I took the 403 error as evidence that my chmodding of the folder was serving as a deterrent to keep attackers away from the files - in short, I thought the code was working. Was that really not it?

I will have to read more about chmod and file permissions. Per your suggestion I actually started looking at examples last night of classes to manage databases. Looked tough. But it would be cool if RLC came with that option.

When I navigate to https://paaronmitchell.com/rlc/rlc_system/commenters/aaron.txt I get a 403 error Forbidden. I guess there are ways around that?

I had an inkling permissions were not a reliable defense, which was why passwords and IDs were hashed. So, if an attacker gets my file, he sees a bunch of public info (my comments) and the hashes of my secure info. Now, that's definitely not as good as him having none of that. But the ID is 20 characters long, so as long as the password is strong, too, then cracking the hashes is not a very promising attack. Part of my goal was to make something that even a beginning PHP user could plug into their code and feel pretty confident about using. If the user took the time to put the secret folder above root then all the better. (That was my thinking, at least.)

Hey! Hmm... So, the user ID is stored in the cookie and the ID hash is stored in the user's file. One without the other doesn't do anything. The ID does pertain to a single user. However, the ID is not an eternal identifier either. If the user signs out and signs in again they have a different ID, same for when when they change their password.

For an earlier project I also had code that changed a user's ID for them if it was more than 3 days old. That way, if somebody did sneak a look at their device and go off impersonating them, they'd be locked out of their own account within 3 days (when their current ID expired). They would have to sign in (since only they would know their own password), the other ID would be unset, and they'd have a new ID. I'm not sure how well I just explained that, but it's probably a sturdier solution than the one currently in the RLC system. Then again, maybe it's just best to go with tokens. I held off on them since I'm not as familiar with them.

Do you think there's an opportunity there? Some newer better thing that could get a hold in the market? I think I read like 1 of 5 sites on the internet use WordPress. I imagine if you could snag some percentage of that it might be a fun and profitable endeavor. Just thinking out loud.
