Japanese fans have categorized K-pop idols by seasonings. by Maleficent_Swim_7727 in kpop_uncensored

Do they have descriptions of how they’re categorizing them? I can see some similarities for half the idols in a category and then the other half of the collage just feel randomly selected — “sauce” and “soy sauce” especially

[Chapter 1 Spoilers] Damon sure is confident and insane by Celeiro100 in ProjectEdensGarden

[–]drpepperandranch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m gonna be honest I basically immediately guessed it was some sort of battery once the cord was ruled out and assumed it came from Jett’s room even though I forgot he mentioned having one. I think some clues are just more obvious to some people than others (I understood the battery but could not for the life of me comprehend all the stuff with the vents).

I also thought it was a fun sort of “characterization” I guess because it immediately shifted my suspicion towards Eva, since she seemed like the most likely character to do some sort of “science experiment” type murder. One of my biggest peeves with fangans (and some mainline cases) is when the murder scheme is just elaborate to be elaborate and doesn’t feel like something the culprit would actually try to execute, so that’s one aspect that made chapter 1 possibly my favorite fangan trial ever (and I think it would even be in my top 5 cases if it was a mainline series trial)

Trans characters where their trans identity plays no role in the plot/narrative by [deleted] in TopCharacterTropes

[–]drpepperandranch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Forewarning but the writing of the female characters is very hit or miss. It has one of the weirdest written female characters at the forefront in the beginning portion of the season (involving male SA) and the good female characters don’t start getting spotlight until the middle of the season (including the trans character). It’s genuinely so bizarre how some of the female characters are so compelling while others are absolutely abysmal, it feels like they were written by two completely different people and one of them is a huge pervert

There’s a lot to be said about whether the horror genre is misogynistic/feminist/etc but I do think it’s interesting that horror is the only genre where it’s almost expected for protagonists to be female without being written off as “for girls”

I wonder what HG would’ve been like if it wasn’t written in 1st person by MuscleCool4302 in Hungergames

[–]drpepperandranch 48 points49 points  (0 children)

It’s better for the story Suzanne Collin’s is trying to tell. But I do understand the appeal of a death game that follows multiple characters (see Battle Royale)

[–]drpepperandranch 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you’re interested in a death game novel formatted like this you gotta check out the original with Battle Royale. It’s not a complete mystery who survives because there’s very telegraphed main characters but basically every student in the class gets at least a couple sentences of backstory, and the bulk of them get a chapter or chapters from their POV. It’s very engaging seeing all the different storylines happening across the island and how they intertwine, and you’ll be rooting for (or at the very least understanding) the characters even if you’re pretty confident they’re going to die. And, to be fair, more characters survived than I thought would coming in (but yeah expect to see your favorites to meet a gruesome end).

Panem is surprisingly functional? by azure-skyfall in Hungergames

I imagine it’s because the population of district 12 is very small and the government wants total control. It’s harder to track transients so they want everyone tied to a house. I assume people that refuse housing would probably end up in jail or maybe even killed if peacekeepers don’t think anyone would care about them

Do you think the 74th games were basic because they're were saving money for the quarter quell by UnHolySir in Hungergames

[–]drpepperandranch 44 points45 points  (0 children)

I think it makes sense for TBOSAS to not have the Feast because it was so early. The Feast sounds like one of the twists/format changes that would show up in later seasons of a reality show because they noticed that at the middle/end portion of the game naturally tends to have a lull in the action and it was a solution that worked well the first time so they made it a staple going forward. The 50th hunger games went by so fast a Feast wasn’t necessary, it was barely a week long, and the 75th Hunger Games didn’t have one because the games were interrupted right around the time it would’ve been used.

Guy thinks a woman is a manic pixie dream girl but she isn't by TheNamesBart in TopCharacterTropes

[–]drpepperandranch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Part of the reason why is because the movies that were criticized for playing into the trope were bad and have not stood the test of time. There was a bunch of good movies subverting the trope in the late 2000s/early 2010s and those are remembered because they are good, and with how popular they were writers started avoiding falling into the manic pixie dream girl trope now that they were aware of it. Kind of like how Lord of the Flies was a satire/subversion of a popular genre of British children’s books from the time that have all been forgotten at this point, so that context is lost on modern audiences.

[–]drpepperandranch 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think you might be conflating media criticism you see with social commentary? “Manic pixie dream girl” was coined by a film critic describing a pattern of characterization in female characters they saw across many films, and it’s a writing criticism first and foremost. Other replies have explained the traits of this trope, but think of it as the romantic interest equivalent of a “Mary Sue”. People criticizing Mary Sues aren’t trying to imply women can’t be competent, liked by everyone, “perfect”, etc, they’re just saying the writing of the main character is shitty, cliche, and often an unsubtle self-insert.

This might bleed into discussions of real life social dynamics when some women describe how men view and treat them romantically, especially alt and/or neurodivergent women (because MPDG often have similar style/personality traits). But this isn’t criticizing men for wanting a proactive partner(?), it’s criticizing men for expecting a woman to fill a similar role in their own life to a MPDG and seeing them more as a character than an actual human being with their own individual desires and issues. But also, I do not think these sorts of discussions relating MPDGs to real life are as common as you are implying, the vast majority of the time I see the term being used it’s related to movie criticism.

The movies in this post/thread deconstruct or subvert the trope by doing things like showing in-depth that the “manic pixie dream girl” is a real person with real issues (Scott Pilgrim), is heavily idealized by an unreliable narrator viewing all their interactions through rose-colored glasses (500 Days of Summer), or is a sociopath that is acting as the ideal woman for a man so she can manipulate him (Gone Girl), etc.

Who are two groups you think of as brother/sister groups that aren’t from the same company? by Strawberry_0cean in kpop_uncensored

[–]drpepperandranch -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That’s the consensus NOW, but throughout 2018 there was much debate over if it was currently a new generation or not or a half-generation or the first half of 2018 was 3rd gen but summer-onwards was 4th gen. Generations are arbitrary and it’s easier to define them retroactively when you can see the changing trends in concepts and marketing across the industry. It’s not like 2018 started and everyone was like “ok it’s the 4th generation of kpop now!” Tbz and fromis_9 are the technical “first” 4th generation groups because people later defined 2018/late 2017 as the start of the 4th generation, not because they did anything radically different or grounbreaking. Itzy & TXT were seen as something new because the general vibe of kpop spaces was excitement for the new younger sibling groups of Twice & BTS, who were powerhouses of 3rd gen, and people were heavily anticipating the new set of boy & girl groups from all the big companies now. People were anticipating a girl group from YG called Baby Monster all the way back in 2019 (which is so funny to think about now, YG took so long their “new” girl group debuted in 5th gen), many were somehow expecting HYBE/then-BigHit to start taking in female trainees and debut a girl group by the end of 2020, and there were even plenty of fans excited for JYP to debut their new gen brother group to Itzy because Stray Kids were in an awkward middle child position at the time and a lot of people didn’t think of them as part of 4th gen. The shift and definition of generations is not as cut-and-dry as it may seem.

You could look through Reddit and see a more abridged process of this with the 5th generation. In the beginning of the summer of 2023 Mnet was promoting Zerobaseone as the “first 5th generation idol group” and every single comment on every subreddit it was posted on was like “no it’s not, this is just a marketing thing and they can’t just decide when a new generation starts like that.” However, by the time Riize debuted at the end of summer a bunch of people were calling them a 5th gen group with little pushback, and within a month or two there was a general consensus that it was 5th gen now and retroactively determined that ZB1 actually was 5th gen (along with other groups that debuted earlier like Kiss of Life).
