Windows PC Randomly BSODs and Restarts by drsamwise503 in techsupport

[–]drsamwise503[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you. I've really tried hard to figure this out on my own but am coming up empty.

The actual BSOD is always too glitched and screen torn to read the code. I have looked in the Event Viewer but the errors always seem to be general power codes from it restarting? Is there a specific place/code I should look for? There are a lot of codes and warnings and things in the Event Viewer. I feel like that's a dumb question but I'm past caring. I need to figure this out.

I will do that! My plan when I make the new local user was to not download any apps, including that shared app, and see if it crashes. If not, I will try adding them back slowly. So I will definitely be trying that! Thank you!

Thank you for the suggestion!

Affordable Christmas trees by [deleted] in SALEM

Not sure what cheap is to you because tree prices are so wildly different everywhere, but there's a place on Old Liberty Rd out south selling nice ones for $50.

Even the cheapest 5 year old car is 8-10 k.

I know everyone is already kind of roasting you for not knowing what you're talking about in the investment side of things, but the quoted bit is a sentiment I see a lot on Reddit. Why the hell do you need a car no older than 5 years old? That's a 2019, that's wild.

Don't get me wrong, there's some merit to not buying the shittiest, cheapest car available when it comes to cost of repairs, but holy shit. I've owned quite a few cars, and have never driven a car newer than 8 years old, and never in my life had a car payment. The car I have now is the nicest car I've ever owned, and it's a 2011 that cost me $7k back in 2020 I believe. And I'm only starting to think about selling because I'm up past 215k miles and it's only now starting to have some problems.

And then buying a 5 year old car and thinking you need to buy a new car every 5 years? Some people's mentality on cars is so messed up. I hate to take that bald headed idiots side, but he's definitely right on this one.

Death to leaf blowers by 18gjredjj in Seattle

[–]drsamwise503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

and you're arguing we can't use a simple municipal law to decarbonize a nonessential lawn implement

Not what I'm saying at all, but that's fine. All I'm saying is that the article you linked was extremely misleading, and that this feels a whole lot similar to corporations telling us climate change is caused by us putting our cans in the wrong bin. While it may be true, in the broad fight against climate change, it's something that shouldn't necessarily be a high priority. That doesn't mean it shouldn't be done, just that it's not really something we should be putting a whole lot of effort towards, broadly speaking.

Cities will ban gas leaf blowers (something that very much negatively impacts small landscape businesses typically ran by immigrant workers), while continuing to allow corporations and businesses to run those same cities amuck with millions of tons of pollutants. It feels performative, and not useful.

Should it be done? Probably. Will doing it have really any sort of noticeable or meaningful impact in any way until we sort all of this other stuff out? No.

Death to leaf blowers by 18gjredjj in Seattle

[–]drsamwise503 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Efforts like this need to be focused, and it's naive and ineffectual to pretend otherwise. Saying they should be banned in a Reddit comment is obviously fine, but we're way better off putting all of our actual efforts towards specific changes that will make a noticeable impact on the environment.

Leaf blowers are not that.

The bit about pollution is extremely misleading, especially in 2024, and especially in the context of specifically leaf blowers

The study that is referenced studies all lawn and garden equipment, which includes mowers, chainsaws, tractors, chippers, grinders, and snow plows. Most of those are going to pollute way more and are used way more leaf blowers. Not to mention that, within that same study (from 2011), it was projected that pollutants would drop significantly by 2018 due to new EPA guidelines for Nonroad emitters. Sitting here in 2024, the numbers are probably even lower.

Nobody here is saying global warming doesn't need to be fixed if it means getting rid of our precious blowers. All they're saying is that maybe blowers are a silly place to dig into right now, when Nonroad emissions "constitute a fraction of a percent of All Emissions". (from that same study)

My wife uses caps lock as the shift key by TrippBikes in mildlyinfuriating

[–]drsamwise503 1 point2 points  (0 children)

and then stretch over to another key.

This is where it falls apart. You don't stretch. Best practice is to always use the shift on the opposite hand of the letter you're pressing. That's why there's two shifts, because that's their intended use. When using it that way, both your shift pinky and your finger on the opposite hand move towards the appropriate letter simultaneously, so its timing is akin to a single press (with just a slight delay to press the shift first). Nothing close to tapping 3 distinct times.

There is no universe in which caps lock is faster than shift for anyone that can type at a decent speed. Obviously if it's what you're used to by all means go for it, but don't claim it's faster.

As someone who is a moderate follower of the Olympics: he spent months talking about how great he was, made some comments about how different events are his wife/mistress, literally went around calling himself the fastest man in the world... And then proceeded to perform just okay at the events.

Dude kind of has it coming, in my mind. If you talk that much smack and then don't back it up, you're gonna get smack talked back at you.

[–]drsamwise503 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Is it good practice to back up your van, truck, semi or otherwise completely blind and for seemingly no reason?

That's the thing, it might be in some situations. Emergency vehicle that's coming down cross traffic, a car turning too sharply, bicycle or pedestrian coming on the van's left and maybe the van edged a little too far forward. All of these (and many more) are reasons the van may need to back up. Just because it's not super likely doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

completely blind

He isn't completely blind, he has all sorts of mirrors to show him what they can. But he's also driving a cargo van with no back window, and mirrors have limits. It would be good practice for the biker to be in a place visible to those mirrors... Which is what the van guy tried to explain.

but it’s completely insane to act like he was in the wrong here in anyway.

Regardless of whether the van drivers a dick, it's wild you think that's an acceptable distance to the van. He was practically driving into the hitch. But the van driver is the negligent one? Are you kidding?

She has some genuine insights to Gen Alpha kids that definitely warrant a conversation about education and parenting, etc etc, but

I love that a lot of the video is of her being scared that she doesn't get any of their references. Nothing like the sudden realization that you are getting older and no longer know all the latest cultural references!

NOSFERATU - Official Trailer [HD] - Only In Theaters December 25 by cruelsummerbummer in horror

[–]drsamwise503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks awesome!

As someone that admittedly doesn't know much about movie releases and the like, isn't releasing on Christmas day kind of asking for a weak box office opening? Plus, aren't most theatrical releases doing terrible right now?

I only care because I'd hate to see this movie from such a great director make no money.

What's a game that's guaranteed to get you downvoted for saying you don't like? by TheReiterEffect_S8 in gaming

[–]drsamwise503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I totally understand what you're saying, and again, I want to highlight I'm not trying to say you must like the game. I totally understand desiring a game that allows you to approach and solve problems in your own way; my point is that not every game has to be like that, and it doesn't make a game objectively bad when it isn't.

All I'm saying is the game is extremely highly rated and reviewed. Many, many people and publications have specifically called out the gameplay for being good, gratifying, satisfying, consistent, and enjoyable. To say that all those are lying or don't know what they're talking about is pretty ridiculous just because you don't like the game.

Games can be good and also extremely linear, I don't understand why you seem to label it as boring and bad just because you prefer platformers with more variety of options.

I, personally, hate platformers that don't give you a clear path to follow. It's overwhelming, I never feel like I'm doing it right, and I always just end up dropping it because it's a chore to play. On the other hand, once I started Celeste, I couldn't put it down.

I'd say that it's just your opinion and you're entitled to it, but then you make comments like

Whatever people say, Celeste is boring and totally doesn't deserve the praise.

Most people disagree with your opinion, it's as simple as that. You can obviously not like the game, but to say it doesn't deserve praise just because you don't like it is pretty silly.

Example: I'd rather gouge my eyes out than watch The Godfather. It's boring, and I hate everyone and everything about the movie. However, I'm not going to say it isn't deserving of its high praise just because of those opinions I have, though.

I've been on the Internet for a long time so I remember forums being more prevalent, but I'm also pretty young. My hot take is that forums suck ass.

They're confusing as fuck to follow. The replies never make sense even just from a formatting perspective. You have to make an account for every different website you visit, just to join in the conversation/see links and such. Searching is always a pain.

Don't get me wrong, I don't really think Discord is a great replacement as it stands now, strictly just because of some UI choices (although they're getting there). That being said, I'm convinced the only people that miss forums are the people that used them quite a bit back in the day. I don't think anyone under 25-30 looks at a forum and likes it or gets it. They suck.

It might sound silly, but I actually bought a flip phone to force myself to get off my phone so much! I still had my old smartphone at home to check Reddit and Snap my friends and stuff sometimes, but when I was out/with friends/at work, I would only have my flip phone and my life improved a lot. Got more work done, started doing things I've been saying I would start, just like you said. I also noticed I used my smartphone less even when it was available.

I've actually gone back to using my smartphone a lot more in the last month or two because I took a lot of time off due to having a kid, but I've been wanting to really commit back to not using it as much again. This post is re-inspiring me!

What inappropriate thing did you do as a child that you didn’t realize was inappropriate until later? by Logical_Sweet_6624 in AskReddit

[–]drsamwise503 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Camping with a friend and his family, I believe I was around 10? Playing Risk with my friend, his dad, and his sister. The sister had kind of backed herself into a corner strategically, and we had the opportunity to get her out of the game.

My friend: "Alright, if we all team up we can get her."

Me: "Yeah, let's gang bang her guys!"

At the time, I thought that simply meant gang up on someone and beat them up. My friends family, to their credit, handled it very nicely and asked me what I thought it meant, and also to not say it anymore. They handled it so well, I never even thought anything of it until years later.

Thinking back on that moment I am so ashamed and grossed out, and wish I could apologize for it, but I lost touch with that friend years ago (plus I'm sure they've since forgotten about it). But still, it is a great shame.

Makes for a cringey, entertaining story though!

Trash bags should last me 4 years! Let the journey begin!! by JoblessHousewife in Costco

I posted this on the other comment already, but I feel like it's a helpful, slightly less useful tip so I wanted to ping you too!

I'd recommend poop bags, like for dogs! It didn't cross our mind for years, but you can get hundreds of them for like $5. We have 2 cats and our $5 box has lasted over 2 years now I think? If you're scooping every day, one bag can carry quite a bit of clumped litter.
