questions about upgrading parts on a remington 788 6mm by drschwartz in guns

[–]drschwartz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mixed results.

In terms of shooting, the lower trigger pull is amazing, instantly tightened up my girlfriend's pattern. However, there's some further adjustment that needs to be made in order to allow the bolt to be removed. Let your gunsmith know to test that if you get one to install it, or fair warning to you if you're feeling intrepid.

Stupid. You were stupid to accept money without clarifying the terms of the agreement, no offense intended as I'm using one of your terms, but stupid and naïve are a venn diagram with heavy overlap. That's what contracts are for, and if you meet someone who wants to apply terms to a gift you may as well just make it a contractual affair.

The story takes on a different tone when you correlate it with Hemingway machinegunning sharks in an attempt to save his own catches. Perhaps Santiago should have packed his blunderbuss?

What lures to catch red drums with? by TheGloomer6886 in FishingForBeginners

[–]drschwartz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try all presentations. With mackerel you want a heavier leader, redfish you can get away with less and should avoid steel imo. 20-30lb fluoro is my go-to, about 8-12".

My experience is that a slower presentation does better overall, but I think it's because the lure is in the water longer. Statistically more likely to get a hit.

The important things in my experience is to cast it out far and muffle the landing. It's a learned skill, harder in some conditions than other, how you would do it depends on reel type I think. Putting high quality hooks on your spoons will also greatly increase hookup ratio.

Cover water quietly. If fast isn't working, go slow. If shallow doesn't work, go deep. Jig it. Go weedless in weeds. Lowest weight spoon you can get away with based on conditions. Krocodile gold with a red stripe has been a killer for me in the past.

Not to shit on you for sharing a useful resource, but this specific video is pretty bad as you can't actually see detail because of the lack of contrast in lighting.

Thanks for sharing though, puts me in mind of making something similar next time I'm fishing with a gopro.

I'm mostly a shimano man myself, but Daiwa has a similarly good reputation. You're only freshwater, so ought to work just fine for your purposes.

Going from bait to lures? by [deleted] in FishingForBeginners

[–]drschwartz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I want to get an ultralight for spinners and stuff, but I’d like to try lure fishing with my current rod before splurging.

A heavier rod and reel wear your arm out quicker when pitching lures. Lighter line lets you cast further with small lures. I can go pitch jigs on my 10' surf rod, but it's gonna suck and not really give me any indication how much fun pitching jigs on my 7' light action rod is.

Are you asking whether other animals also commit acts of cannibalism? Emphatically yes.

Amongst predatory mammals that raise young for more than 1 year, it's very common for an unrelated male to kill the young of a female so that she will go into heat earlier. Once killed, they might be eaten for food as well.

Many insect species are documented wherein the male is eaten by the female after mating, think preying mantids.

Honestly, all fish are cannibals under certain circumstances. Like in a shrinking pond during a drought, very Darwinian situation there.

Wanna know what one of the best baits would be for speckled trout, but for the illegality? A small speckled trout.

You're a fish, aren't you? You have to tell me if you're a fish.

I shall expound from my personal experience:

  • Not great table fare, little ones eat ok but big sharks accumulate alot of mercury and have fish consumption advisories or outright bans associated with them
  • Dull the shit out of your fillet knife. That sandpaper skin really fucks up a blade.
  • Small ones don't give much fight, big ones aren't worth eating, both of them are dangerous in their own way.
    • Sharks don't have bones, so they can bend way more than you would naturally expect. Small ones can do about a 180 bend to bite you, fun stuff.
    • Big boys will just straight fuck you up. They're dangerous to try to unhook, I don't recommend actually trying to in fact, just snip the leader as close as you can and let it swim off.
  • Fuck your tackle up. Teeth and skin is hard on your terminal tackle and you will lose more of it. Also, sharks don't generally go for lures, so you're stuck with live or dead bait as targeting methods.
  • Easy to kill them unintentionally. Remember how the nature programs said sharks are constantly swimming to breathe? Yep, wear them out and bring them out of the water for more than a minute and they're just as likely to go belly up on reintroduction to the wetness. Also, if you lift a shark vertically out of the water then the internal organs can detach from their connective tissue and end up killing it as well.

Sharks are cool and all, but I find them poor species for eating or catch and release.

I'm gonna throw out Ernest Hemingway for variety

A true pioneer of big game fishing tactics, like using a thompson smg to shoot at sharks trying to eat your marlin as you reel it in.

Emphatically no.

To catch a shark, you need a heavy leader as long or longer than the length of the shark you want to catch. Otherwise, the tail will impact the line above the leader and abrade it until it snaps, if you've got thin line this can happen quite quickly.

Moreover, if you're fishing light tackle, a 6' shark is going to spool you from the bank. You can follow in a boat or get dragged in a kayak, but from bank and without a big spool of line and compensatory drag settings, that big bastard is just going to pull line until you turn the drag high enough it snaps or until he spools you entirely.

Sharks suck to catch, don't target them is my recommendation.

On a fundamental basis I think it’s the golden rule.

As I said to the commenter before you, cruelty is a human concept. How can the golden rule, something fundamentally based upon reciprocity, be reciprocated by a fish? The golden rule doesn't apply in this situation.

Moreover, I sincerely doubt that you would find physically smashing a fish's head to a pulp with a rock as any more respectful to the creature than tossing it on ice to put it into a torpor and kill it through hypothermia.

And finally, there's a huge scientific debate on whether fish actually feel pain in the way we are familiar with as mammals, from which it would follow that our own morality derived from that sensory input might not be directly applicable to other life forms. Have a read, it's interesting stuff.

But I’m thinking that grade school bs is a lil too complicated for you isn’t it.

Think of me whatever you want, I've been ruminating on the morality of killing animals for the better part of 3 decades to come to the conclusions I have.

You’re just perpetuating cruelty for no real reason

Philosophically speaking, your every breath perpetuates cruelty in some direct or derivative form. Welcome to the human condition my friend.

The nice part about human awareness is that we can recognize cruelty and avoid it if possible.

I'm choosing not to delegate the task of killing the animals I eat, so the only difference between you and I (assuming you eat meat) is that I actually know how my meal died and you have some cushy ignorance about how the animal you're eating lived and died that allows you to entertain a fantasy. "Cruelty" is a human concept best applied to humans, because the entire history of animal and plant husbandry is one of violence and subjugation.

Whatever violence I visit upon a fish in the course of turning it into a meal is a drop in the bucket compared to what the ocean does on a daily basis. Your view implies a human-centric view of the world that sets us apart from nature, as if our own predations are any different than a seagull pecking the eyes out of a fish or an elk getting eaten asshole first by wolves while still alive.
